Water Levels Rising In Brisbane CBD

The thought of an extension cord crossed my mind, but looping over two pools didnt seem wise......
We have power. We are powering one 10A powerboard for our back neighbour . Mrs Alby showed other neighbours how to power others. Our freezer is full of other peoples' frozen supplies.

Does any realise that when the shops do open that they wont have anything?

Fruit and Veg will be a no go for at least a week with the issues at Rocklea, with both the New England and Pacific Hwys blocked (and Gundi going under tonight which is a major truck route) air will be the main supply route assuming rail is down as well. The PM has committed two C17s now and in Brisbane we are lucky to have suitable landing sites however out West its going to be a long haul operation. The picture on news.com.au at present is part of the markets, and there are a lot of trucks under water on TV at present at the markets as well.

Another night with the fams. Where I was @ South Brisbane still has no power, and there is some flooding on the street.

Luckily I packed an evac kit :)

I could go back and get my other items, but the place is kind of in disarray as far as I am aware.

Again - I'm all good and soldiering on.

I haven't seen much info about the state of rail infrastructure (apart from some passenger lines) - anyone have any ideas?

Does Ipswich have a good airstrip closer than Archerfield (which apparently *just* escaped unscathed this morning)?

There's a QR National update here: QR National - Doesn't cover all of the train issues, but covers some major points affecting their freight haulage.

Don't know the full story but here is some of it.

- As far as I know there are no Ipswich line, Cleveland line and Gold Coast line trains.
- Caboolture, Shorncliffe and Ferny Grove lines have 1 service an hour
- Airport line from Roma Street to Domestic Airport operates every half hour

Train travel was free today even on the airtrain.

As far as I am aware travel on Ipswich line past Sherwood is not likely to happen for a few days at least.

The RAAF base is next door to Ipswich where many of the choppers are based, not sure what state its in for fixed wing.

Can the C17 operate into archerfield?

I wish the ABC would stop showing the montage which features the 4WD in the middle of a large water body and a close up of the people inside, the knowledge now that they all did not possibly survive is making it very hard to watch.

Is this the one that the premier announced that the mum and child were saved but the father is missing? However I haven't had a good look at that picture but I had the impression at one stage that they might have actually been sitting in a big field of mud and debris.

A C17 was designed to land on a 3000 x 90 ft strip so no luck there. And I believe the car was the one the Premier mentioned, the vision shows the mum with her head on the glovebox area obviously distressed, it must have been terrible for the rescue crew and media to have to leave the man behind.

We were watching the news this evening and saw the footage of Bligh shedding some tears whilst giving an address.

Dad reckons that it's all an act to get her incompetent government re-elected.

Really, if politicians need to spin something that low for our support then now is not the time.

I am not her number one fan, and I shared a J cabin with her in December on a flight from Sydney that left me less than impressed with her manners, but watching her over the last few days I have been very impressed, yesterday she clearly was run down with blood shot eyes but doing everything possible to prepare for the night, it was an unusual show of strength and good preparation.

Her performance today was very realistic, the initial danger has passed in terms of the rising river and the reality of what has happened is starting to be felt by all and will manifest itself in ways that people have no control over.

Nature has a way of making us feel humble and powerless no matter what our job is.

I must say during this crisis she has performed well in the times I have seen Bligh- certainly a mile in front of the PM. Noticed that Buzzard was speaking much faster today.

A couple of days ago they were talking about evacuating Amberley, which isn't a good sign! If it is operational that'll certainly be a massive help, I just assumed it was out of action.

Yep, she's done a good job, and there have been no (publicly visible and talked about) stuff-ups. So things are going well for her.

I'm not a fan of her by any stretch of the imagination - but she and her team of cohorts are currently handling things in an excellent manner.

Because of my Aspergers it’s not easy for me to read emotions and that sort of stuff, but I thought her breakdown during the news conference was real, I didn’t see it as a ploy to win back voters. Of course as I say, if it was fake I clearly wouldn’t be the one to see through it.

Wow. I live in Adelaide, I'm a proud Queenslander, all my family and friends in Brisbane are safe and well and relatively unaffected and yet I feel emotional about the pictures that I'm seeing. I think that the person who is leading the state and getting all the news first hand in full detail is going to feel the emotions of what everyone is experiencing.

just thinking about those 40 missing people and realising what has most likely happened to them is a big thing.....

On a more serious note, how did they get the floaties on King Wally :lol:

I heard they were trying to salvage all the memories in The Cauldron (or at least protect them) in order to avoid them being washed away / destroyed like in 1974.

They couldn't move The King, so they did the next best thing.

Bligh was more authentic than that red crested crow we have as a PM.

I think she is genuine in her desire to help. The Ministers she has look like duds......half are prepubescent.
