Water Levels Rising In Brisbane CBD

Pardon my ignorance as I don't get to Brisbane often and I'm hoping some locals can advise on the geography, and how it might affect plans for the weekend.

Could anyone advise if Redcliffe is accessible via the main roads from the airport and, given the general conditions, would it be better for locals if interstate visitors stayed away for a while longer?

Thanks:)

You wont have any issues with access or being in the way, the peninsular is not affected at all. You might have the odd issue with food like bread but that may well be sorted by Friday.

Re: Request for a property law type person

Hi All,

Alby has been busy this week preparing for his office and warehouse to be inundated.

Cutting to the chase, is there a property law person familiar with commercial leases that can quickly read my lease and point me to what conditions, if any, I need to exercise. Please PM me. It may be a day or two before I respond.

Our business will recover reasonably quickly but also need to get maximum support form the landowner. Obviously it is difficult to get this done in Brisbane at the moment as everyone is dealing with their own issues.

On a personal situation, my family and I are well situated away from flood threat. I am distressed at the pain and misery that the many people will endure whom have lost their loved ones and/or personal belongings.

I can plan and execute to recover the business, I can't imagine how people can face their personal losses.

Good luck tonight everyone.

Alby

Thanks markis10...

.. as a footnote, I've rescheduled the trip for a couple of weeks time to avoid another person in the (literal) food chain at what could, for many, be a difficult time.

Good luck to all or any affected.

Two of my friends who are in the Army in Brisbane have been called into work tomorrow. A third has been called and asked if he's ok but not called in. Job's on.

Mmmmm interesting

7 Brigade which is Brisbane based have been recalled from their annual leave (where possible) and told to bring their kit.

5 brigade (Holsworthy) are activating its' Reservists. Their call out is optional. I believe Reservists in Victoria are on notice.

No News is reporting that Queensland police have stated that the Brisbane river has peaked at 4.46m which is lower than was expected, the level is expected to stay high today and tomorrow but should slowly recede over the weekend.
Lets hope the worst is over and the rain will hold off from now on.
Best Wishes

Well there is some good news to the timing of this event. The Global Chairman and CEO of the company I work for happens to be in Australia at this time, and announced yesterday that he has authorised a SIGNIFICANT donation to the flood appeal. With around 300 staff located in various parts of Qld, and the Brisbane office closed until at least Monday, he has been moved by the enormity of the disaster area and the impact on a very large number of people.

That's what I've done.

Wasn't easy with the trains not being available, but got there in the end.
Good to hear that you were able to get to work OK.

No such luck for me working on the Ipswich line. Seeing the footage around Milton and the xx_X brewery under water makes me think I won't be able to get to work tomorrow either.

Apparently the Lord Mayor is making an address about public transport at noon today.

Tax help for flood affected areas in Queensland

Tax help for flood affected areas in Queensland

From the ATO.
We are implementing a range of support strategies to help people affected by the continuing floods in Queensland, including the deferral of lodgment dates and the implementation of general interest charge (GIC) stoppers for businesses, tax payers and tax practitioners.

If you or any of your clients reside within the affected areas we will automatically defer the lodgment and payment date for December monthly activity statements originally due 21 January 2011 to 21 February 2011, so you do not need to apply for a deferral. If any later deferrals have already been granted, these still apply.

If you or your clients face other lodgment or payment obligations in the coming weeks and you need additional time, phone us on 13 72 86 Fast Key Code 5 before any due dates.

In the meantime, if you have been affected by the floods and receive any correspondence from us that you or your clients are not ready to deal with, contact us and we will make special arrangements for you.

Hello from work. We have no power at home, so work was a good option. :(

Energex to give an update c. 1530 today (Thursday) as to plans to re-electrify (:p) affected areas of Brisbane.

Friends nearby had water to the door but not in - lucky it was 4.46m and not 5.46m. We're high and dry by a fair margin after all.

Freezer now cleaned out and in a friends freezer given unknown Electricity (I ate a lot of Gelati from our freezer last night!). Bit frustrating when we realised that our street and towards the water is out, but literally just over our back fence and the other direction the lights are on. Missed it by one street. The thought of an extension cord crossed my mind, but looping over two pools didnt seem wise......

What sort of person loots, contemplates looting, in these circumstances? Lowlife?

Have you witnessed a live one? You should report it.

In answer to your question, only a person who should be shot or removed from the gene pool. Unfortunately, our gutless legal system cannot accommodate that kind of action.

The University of Queensland has been closed until and including next Wednesday. We're not expected to present ourselves at campus until that time.

Our building is not far from the large UQ lakes. The lakes have obviously topped and joined with the Brisbane River. I can tell you now that the water quality of the lake is certainly not suitable for human consumption! (It looks pretty horrid up close; I'm surprised it doesn't smell more than it does).

Luckily it seems that only the carpark and possibly 2nd floor of our building was flooded. Our offices don't start until the 4th floor and upwards, so it seems at least they are all intact. The only exception is one of the laboratories which is located on the 1st floor (carpark level) - possibly the contents there might be ruined.

I wish the ABC would stop showing the montage which features the 4WD in the middle of a large water body and a close up of the people inside, the knowledge now that they all did not possibly survive is making it very hard to watch.

If transport starts going back to regular service tomorrow I will go into work, but so many of our servers are in the city and down there might not be any point.

With a large part of QUT Gardens Point under water (I work at QUT), even though I work at Kelvin Grove Campus so much wont be working.

I saw a quote from the Ipswich Mayor, saying that looters will be used as flood markers.

I heard him say that, was quite funny. I think they’ve arrested 3 now and have set up a special task force too.

I remember when Nine were showing that all the time, and I’m glad they stopped, but they keep replaying the interview with the guy that saved the boy in Toowoomba but couldn’t save the other boy and his mother and it’s getting really close to me turning the TV off if they keep going with that.
