Ways that hotels annoy guests

Ooh don’t say this. I’ve done exactly this for a trip to the US.

You might be all right @Pushka. We did this in December in Dubai X arrived at hotel at 0230. I had just checked with them by email and prepaid for the first night so as not to be marked as a no show, and it all went very smoothly. It was an Accor Pullman.

Hotels that typically accomodate longer stays (eg resort type hotels) that don’t provide sufficient clothing drawer or shelf space for two people.

Only one luggage stand in “double” (or worse twin) rooms.

I agree, also the luggage stands don't accommodate the clamshell suitcases when they are open.

North American and European hotels that don’t allow the aircon cooling function during winter and therefore the room is the same overheated space as the rest of the hotel.

Magnifying make-up mirrors that are nowhere near the bathroom light source. Or dimly lit bathrooms where you don’t realise you’ve applied clown make-up until you enter daylight.

Front desk asking if you've stayed with them before...

They ask that to see if you know your way around the hotel and its features. I was asked once and said I may have. It was a new receptionist. I had stayed in that hotel over 100 times and had been recognised by an anniversary welcome and since then free upgrades at any time. Now I have a special rate at the hotel and can book a single night when they do the two nights minimum routine. This week is Mardi Gras so most SYD hotels are over $400. I had a room for under $300; actually a suite! I have found the two nights minimum a pain. It is common amongst some hotels in Canberra, or when there are major events in other cities.

Whilst many of the aforementioned things do annoy me, there’s a strong correlation between the price I’m paying (or star rating) and my level of annoyance.

I have found the two nights minimum a pain. It is common amongst some hotels in Canberra, or when there are major events in other cities.

There are some ryokan in Japan that have been made popular by being featured in some anime.
They refuse to accept bookings for single guests, saying it is because of the popularity.

Hotels with "airport" in their name, or otherwise claiming to be an "airport hotel" that are not walking distance from the terminal.

This so much.
Such a pain to trawl through hotels when searching only to find some are 3-4km or further from the airport.
If it ain’t within walking distance of the terminal it’s not an airport hotel

Depends how you define "walking distance".
Many of the LAX hotels are within a reasonable distance of the terminals, but it isn't exactly "walk-able". Especially once you get to the Sepulveda Blvd/Century Blvd intersection. No footpath on World Way that isn't directly at the terminal, and the paths along Century Blvd are poor quality or non existent in parts. There is no path on the south side of Century Blvd past the airport side of Sepulveda Blvd, and segments of the path on the north side are blocked by the people mover construction.
Meanwhile, the airport hotels around SEA are within the same distance as the LAX hotels. The path along International Blvd are wide and well maintained and you aren't required to fight the traffic to access the terminal. You can go to the bridge over the airport access roads and enter the airport via the light rail station near the Hilton.

Had that exact thing at the hotel I've spent the last three nights at in Dublin. Just another reason that I am convinced that hotel rooms are designed by people that never have to stay in them.

Thing that really annoys me is hotels with bathrooms that are so small that you have to step out of the bathroom to dry yourself after having a shower - Wharney Hotel in Hong Kong is one recent example.
