Wendouree allocations and general discussion

Someone must have got on the blower when they saw the scores ;)

edit - maybe the best shiraz grapes were siphoned off to the 24b?
According to the Wendouree mailer - Shiraz 24b grapes were sourced from the original Central vineyard bush vines (block 24b - hence the name) planted in 1893. Whereas Shiraz grapes came from 1919 Eastern vineyard plantings.

Interestingly in the Shiraz Mataro blend - the shiraz grapes came from both of the plantings (Eastern and Central)

I’m still happy. If you think about our retail from winery.. a 92 point Shiraz is still pretty decent for 75 bucks. Time will tell with some of these in 8-15 years. I’m more of the Shiraz Malbec, and Cabernet styles but would have loved a few of the 24B to compare.

Apparently they will make more 2023 24b next year so hopefully we could get a chance to grab it.

Wendouree Shiraz 24b 2022

A new wine from old vines. Shiraz from the original Central vineyard bush vines (block 24b) planted in 1893.
Intense black fruit, lots of gum leaf and twigs, floral and dried herb perfume, thyme and the like. Bold flavour, but more into fruit tannin here, and also sweetness of fruit, ferrous and firm, nutty too, with a bright and very long finish. This is much more like Wendouree Shiraz for me. Excellent. It feel like a wine that knows what it's all about.

I must say, I am a little bit deflated after reading TWF reviews (Re Malbec 2022 - the conclusion was .. good, but not great)

On more positive note they say that it is good to drink after 5 years of cellaring. Maybe they are making more approachable, drink sooner styles now?

I happened to dig through my cellar for my first Wendouree experience last weekend - a 2017 Shiraz Malbec. I was assured by a good wine friend that it was the best bottle in my cellar but it just didnt wow me and meet the hype. I might be an outlier or it might have been the vintage but the other 2 bottles might get put up for auction.

That’s right. The 22 conditions were pretty decent in Clare. So retaining freshness and drinkability more so. Ageing capabilities is still evident on these. If you check out Erin Larkins 21 vintage notes vid on You tube. She does talk a little about the 22 season and the 21 direction. I’ve had recent experiences with older ones as some here may have also, with the old man they need time for sure.

Nice, I had a 16 not long ago. Thought it was really nice. acid, tannin structure was quite high, but fruit was dense, powerful and rich. Seriously young IMO.
Just a question, what were you looking for in the wine to wow you? Or why didn’t it at that stage.

The 2017 wasn't a great vintage at all, it was wet & cold. I would see as an earlier drinking vintage.

I tried the 2017 Shiraz Malbec on release and it was a bit disjointed at the time. I'll probably check back on it soon to see how its tracking.

I had a 2017 Malbec recently and it was a very good wine. 1 hour decant and it was good to go.

The only sure fire way for sure is to open one and try it. A young Wendouree Malbec and good pizza is the way to go.

FWIW here is a review for straight Malbec I was referring to
Wendouree Malbec 2022

Central vineyard planted 1898. Generally, I love Wendouree Malbec, but this one is a lesser wine.

Plum, roses, blond tobacco, peppermint, spice. Medium-bodied, and feels like a lighter, more lithe expression of Wendouree Malbec, and quite light on its feet, hazelnut and biscuitty oak, fine-grained but firm tannin, with a light chew to a finish of excellent length. There's a bit of lemon peel in this wine too, and it feels maybe a little brittle and fragile. It does not have the stuffing and tannic impact of the best vintages, though it does have charm. Nutmeg is a thing. Good. Not great.
