Wendouree allocations and general discussion

Hey guys, just after some advice - which one out of 2022 vintage wines would be a good drink now?
Thinking a Malbec or Mataro blend?
I opened a 2022 Shiraz Mataro just before Christmas. Decanted and let it breath for a few hours....first glass average, second glass an hour or so later a bit better. Poured the rest back in the bottle, and repeated the process the following night.....first glass much better, and the remainder was excellent. So i guess plenty of air time and patience is what I got out of that experience.

I opened a bottle of Muscat of Alexandria ( I just realised it is a sub-variety of Muscat). I must say that for my taste it was way too sweet, perhaps stopping short of sickeningly sweet. Even for SWMBO. We had to dilute it with sparkling mineral water and add some ice to make it into a refreshing drink on a warm evening. Luckily I only ordered one bottle to try.

Drink it with a fresh lime wedge and ice next time don’t dilute. It will make this perfect.

I have never bothered with the Wendouree waiting list pantomime.
Yes, I have had the (aged) shiraz and it is great, but there are many other Aussie reds as good or better.
And yes, I understand the value for money in buying direct from this producer.
I have hundreds of great bottles from other wineries (Likely too many) and I just don't need it.
I'm sure the owners are very nice people, but to me the whole process just seems a bit undignified and humiliating.
Not for me thank you.

I was a regular buyer from some time in the mid-late 80's when it was possible to group-buy in bulk and share.
Then moved to individual buying and worked up to black initials.
Due to various circumstances I missed buying one year (2011 vintage I think) and was immediately dropped off the list. Asked to be re-instated, was added back to the list at the low red crayon level. Bought once more, then sold all I had at auction.
Three thousand bottles in the cellar and just one lonely bottle of Wendouree Shiraz 2012 kept as a curio.

I'm 59 and I'm not sure if I have too much stored away.
If you do the maths, you might struggle to finish 3000 redbigot!
Unless you have help drinking it of course :)
My old man kept a lot of his collection a bit too long and some of it was wasted.

I'm a fair bit older than that and the cellar has been at that level, up and down a little, since 2005. I have just about stopped buying now, I hope I have 10 years of drinking left in me. And I do have help, tasting groups, friends etc that are very willing to help me drink the good stuff. Hopefully there will be a decent amount of good reds left for the wake.

I’m sitting at about 400 and reckon that’s enough. Consuming ~150 per year and trying to keep buying to that level, most of my quaffers are 5-8 years old :-)

PS - time flies doesn’t it, feels like I just got my first order (last year) and it’s nearly that time for the lottery again!
