What cheeses me off

I play Wordle everyday and also played a similar type game.
Went to play this morning and they wanted me to watch a video before playing, or pay US$10.

Instantly deleted, Can't be bothered with that cough.

FYI the NYT have an offer atm for AU$20 for a year of unlimited puzzles, full access to all digital versions of the NYT newspaper and recipes. No ads to play then.

Placing an on line order and you get a text and an email - no way to opt out of texting - GRRRRRRR

Whenever I receive unsolicited sms I just use the block function and any further texts from that number/sender get auto deleted.

Was the text confirming your order or shipping details (or similar)? Or was it marketing something to you? If marketing then failing to add an opt-out option is a definite no-no. On the other hand, if it's a confirmation or similar, then they're well within their rights to do that.

That’s what I used to do, but I also found mobile numbers rotated so often across to legitimate users that I no longer block any. Just keep them there and when the next one on a similar number comes through I know it Abada bad one.

If I know you, your number is in my contacts, never had spam message from a spoofed known contact.YMMV but i see no reason not to continue to block them.

Confirming the order, but I don’t need a text and an email. It would be nice to be able to to opt out of one, but there isn’t an option

Yeah, I take your point. I do note that some online ordering processes ask for an email and phone number, but the phone number is an optional field. Email is typically mandatory (for obvious reasons), but if you add in the phone number, they will leverage that + email. Certainly appreciate that this isn't the situation with all online ordering.

The thing is, I can also see it from the seller's perspective. Email + text improves the likelihood of important info being received. Relying on email alone runs the risk of those messages being caught up in spam filters etc etc.

most places where you make an appointment now confirm by SMS and frequently ask you to reply yes or no to the appointment.

and I’ve noticed for places like dentist and similar that for whatever reason, the confirmation comes from a different number if not each time, then every two or three times.

of course I phone rather confirm via SMS if it’s a new number but the number and message is always legitimate.

Now, I don’t know why they use different numbers, but they do. And I don’t think scammers are going to keep using the same or same suite of numbers for precisely the reason that they’ll get blocked. So as I said, you get a rotation from scammers to legitimate numbers.

Now whatever you do obviously suits you, but I would say there’s a small chance that you would not receive an SMS that’s important because it’s a previous scam number and you’ve blocked it. YMMV.

in a related vein, I’m currently getting an avalanche of silly spam and phishing. Emails to my BigPond accounts. Ones where they vary the number of repeated letters and underscoring to get past any filter you might have set. As I’m getting out of BigPond emails as soon as I can make sure everyone is transitioned to my new one, I simply delete the Spam rather than trying to reset a filter for them.

That's because often dentists and doctors and small traders are using a third party app / aggregator to transmit their messages and they have a pool of numbers that are used to send the messages. Your message might come from any one of the numbers in the pool. e.g. for example you might get an SMS from say your local hire-a-hubby and from your dentist on the same number and the converse your dentist's messages seem to come from a different number every time.

WCMO - opening the rego renewal for my 50cc moped and discovering that the QLD government has decided that a 34% increase fits the bill. WTF!!!!
And there’s absolutely nothing you can do about it.

And what’s more difficult is that you might still get text reminders even though the provider has already called you as they needed to cancel.

I know, that adds to the level of cheesed-off-ness. There is literally no justification for that kind of increase. I expect the QLD government is trying to claw back the money they spent on electricity rebates for everyone.

If this is a blanket increase of 34% to all registration for all classes of vehicle/# cylinders, maybe A Current Affair will turn it into a 'thing'.

I can't imagine this strategy is going to win many votes for the next State election!

My dentist and physio confirmations always come from the same number. And ime if you don't reply they follow up with a call.

If it's a legit notification I don't block, but any scam or advertising ones do get blocked. Works for me.

Is Airlines misleading information on pricing. Just went to book a fare to ADL and timing and price of ZL looked better than JQ so went to the ZL site which offered me "special promo" price for limited seats available tomorrow - lowest going rate non refundable $199 with lots of attempts at upsell for different packages and options.

Was about to press the buy button and got interrupted by phone calls etc.

Went back to the PC and instead went to skyscanner to see if prices on one of the other 3 airlines had dropped in the meantime and there's the same seat on the same flight on ZL via EDreams for $140.65 including cc fee. Had both websites up at the same time for same flight same day and still the lowest cost seat on ZL showing $199.

I purchased via EDreams and got a few seconds later "please check-in for your flight tomorrow" email from ZL.
