What Does The Noob Status Matched QFF Need to Look Out For?

...as someone who flies enough that I dont really care what type of food is available in the lounge.

Weird... the more I fly, the more I care what food they have in the lounge.

Maybe two flights a week isn't "enough"!

Velocity points are reset to zero after 36 months of no activity within the account - any points earn/burn is considered activity. (This is hidden away in the T&C's - clause 3.22)

No upgrades (points or otherwise) are currently available for VA longhaul.

If you have status with Velocity, you can assign seating for any fare class on any VA longhaul flight (IIRC "V Promo" fares otherwise don't allow advance seat selection). DJ flights can have seating assigned 14 days before.

Thank you for your info. Not such good news re the VA upgrades, though :(

Okay, I've finally taken the plunge and booked 2 returns (BNE/SYD/BNE next week and BNE/CBR/BNE in Jan). Both meet the double SC criteria, so handystart for my VA earning. Wife, M-i-L + kids thinking about coming to CBR, so they have until 5pm to opt in :D (so I can pick up the fares in the 25% off multi-pax and orgnise points+pay CP CBR stay).

Now, booking was easy and as intuitive as QF booking. Hardly cracked a sweat, loved the ability to put VFF details in mid-booking with the clever option about whether travelling on itinerary, or merely booking for others. Nice work. Bit miffed with the separately invoiced carbon offset fee, but not a huge issue.

Loved the seat allocation option for next weeks' flight and would have to say, there would have been no way on QF I'd have got anywhere near a good seat allocation (as a Gold in both programs, QF would have been Row 10+ whereas VA automatically gave me 3D on both sectors - my preferred side, lucky guess VA ;)). Now yes, I realise that's probably fortunate, but a * nonetheless.

Have no idea what aircraft type I'm flying, but should be better than QF 734's - I couldn't find a pop-up box to show me what the type was for both flights, but I'm not that fussy.

Access to BNE & SYD The Lounges as Gold and ATA is nice - but no use on this trip. Check-in online probably very similar, however as I have no idea about BP's, am I better printing off BP? Whilst I collect all tickets & BP's (yes, since 1989 - nice box full :o) it isn't as collector-friendly (but I can live with it). Interested in seeing the fancy SYD Lounge access etc...

What else should I be doing or thinking?? (other than look to change my Avatar - perhaps I should learn how to photoshop a half/half QF/DJ plane :D). Hopefully I remember to go to the right Terminal

Just be careful with this point. Once you finish OLCI and close the window, you can't print your baording pass again either online, or at a kiosk. You'll have to find a human.

They've added that in to the website not too long ago - as you go through flight selection, you can click on the flight number and a pop-up opens that shows scheduled flight time and metal.

In my opinion, no need to mess around with OLCI - select your seats at some point before the flight, collect the shop-a-docket at the lounge or from a kiosk. Too easy.

If you don't have checked luggage for your return flight SYD-BNE, do make a point of using the premium lounge entry at SYD - a far nicer experience than going through security in the terminal. Other than that .. enjoy your flight, I guess?

I'm no aircraft type expert either, other than seeing the gross (not subtle) differences. I.e. 2-2 is an E jet, 3-3 is a 737 but look for 2-2 in rows 1 and 2 to indicate one of the new aircraft. That's all I got, sorry.

On the BP, I do "web check in" to secure my seat but don't print the BP. Remember you can only check in once. If you want a card BP go to the premium desk and ask then to print your BP, if checked in. I normally request a BP in the lounge that gets me a shopping docket BP. I think you will also get a shopping docket from the kiosk and also at the gate desk. Obviously print at home if you want an A4 inkjet BP ;)

There is a risk of losing seat selection if not checked in.

Yep definitely use the premium entry in SYD.

See what support I have in this Community - why would I go anywhere else??

Will keep that information handy

Hmmm, missed that when doing the booking :(

Shop-a-docket - not if I can help it.

I'm trying to keep it to hand luggage, but may not work out :o

Glad to see I'm not the only one - all this BSI stuff is beyond me

Thanks for the card BP idea

I too have taken the plunge, sorted the family pooling thing ( all to my advantage of course ;) ) . Booked us all on VA to BNE for our annual Sunshine Coast holiday in January. It fits into the double SC promotion and also the 25% for partner bookings promo.
Now what about a Lounge in NTL?
:D
I note that seat selection for the flights opens up 2 weeks before, am thinking as a noob that's probably a normal thing?

Exactly what I just did as well. I weakened and suggested my wife and kids come down to CBR with me (going for a day of work and 3 days Conference), then my M-i-L says she’s never been to CBR and can help look after the kids. Too good an offer to refuse as we’d have spent that much on babysitting – means my wife can attend the Conference Ball.

Revenue of $868 on their tickets and $678 on mine above – total $1,546. QF missed out on all of that.
I think that repays VA on trumping up for the status match ;)

One important tip: know where the premium lounge entry is before you head to the airport!

Follow the signs to SYD T2 departures, then drive all the way past the normal drop off area. At the end of the normal drop off (basically past the end of the roof-covered drop off area) you'll see the sign for "Virgin Australia".

I forgot where the entry was and couldn't direct the taxi to the place. So I ended up walking there from the main terminal.

You could check-in at the normal terminal if you have bags, then exit out to the premium lounge entry to get through security much faster. You'll then be deposited into the "back" of the Virgin lounge.

Can someone tell me whether you can book a DJ reward seat online for someone else from your Velocity account? I'm thinking of TF all my +1's DJ points to my account, and at times, will be booking flights for her when I'm not part of the travellling group.

Easy enough, log in an then select "Search and Book Flights" from the left hand menu.

When it comes time to enter PAX details, DO NOT select
imflying.gif
, simply enter your +1's details.

Not that there is a points fee if you indicate the PAX you are booking for does not meet one of the following criteria:

  • Customer:Self
  • Spouse: Husband/Wife
  • Partner: Partner/Defacto
  • Parent: Parents/Step-parent
  • Grandparent: Grandparent
  • ParentInLaw: Father/Mother-in-law
  • Sibling: Brother/Sister
  • Child: Son/Daughter
  • ChildInLaw: Son/Daughter-in-law
  • Grandchild: Grandchild
Choose "Other" and "A fee applies for this guest" appears.

The "Guest Fee" appears on the next page & it's 4100per booking.

Driving - me, in SYD - not likely anat0l :shock:. Trains + walking for me in SYD, the ocassional taxi (but not to the airport from the city).

Sounds like a plan :!::D

I continue to struggle trying to use the award booking engine.

I click on Sydney and then click on Singapore from available destinations and no flights available. I tried April, June, August 2012 and some other random dates but no go. I managed to find availability for SYD-HKG but this was 104,000 Velocity points +$408 in economy.

The website does take getting used to. Is there is a flexible with dates option?
