Many airlines seem to 'tighthen' their eligibility criteria to reach elite status. One of the so-called problems that have been frequently cited is the overcrowding of lounges.

Now, what if airliens remove or limit lounge access for elite frequent flyers, but give other benefits in exchange?

While I love lounges, they do get old after a while. I am only platinum for a few years but I am already starting to feel a bit bored with lounge offerings, even at Qantas First lounges (though the seasonal menu changes does keep things interesting). As somebody who flies mostly kettle class for work and other necessary personal reasons, you often do not want to, nor have the opportunity to, spend too much time in the lounge anyway. Also, the temptation of free champagne/wine also makes you drink more than you should and you feel bad afterwards. I would love to not have those regret moments.

Other elite frequent flyer benefits are honestly quite useless.

Priority boarding: I hate it but it is out of necessity to secure overhead luggage space. Now, it is NOT being the first ones to board that matters (why do anyone want to spend a second more time on a plane?), but it is just to make sure your carry on has a home near where you sit so that you do not have to squeeze yourself to the back of the plane to retrieve your luggage when deplaning (*shudder*).

Other equally useless benefits:extra xx kg in checked for check-in luggages (most genuine frequent flyers that I know prefer carry on), priority stand-by (seriously... the only people I know doing stand by were those flying for free/heavily discounted ticket because they are airlines employees), and the worst offender: greetings by the FA that achieve nothing but perhaps to stroke the passengers' ego... (I try to pretend I am sleeping when the FA start doing their round greeting Platinum/Emerald passengers, LOL! so awkward...).

So, it makes me think, am I the odd one out here or do frequent fleyrs feel the same? I personally prefer these benefits:
- Free ticket date/time change for elite flyers as long as there is availability or waive the change fee at least (even for discounted ticket). Look, there is no additional cost to airlines as the plane WILL FLY anyway. Yes, they may lose out on change fees, but what if it comes in exchange of lounge access? I think it makes sense, no? Besides, most people would NOT want to change their ticket unless they have to.
- Guaranteed overhead luggaeg space (I know it is laughable, but who knows there are genius out there who can think of how to achieve that!)
- Priority DE-planing regardless of where I sit (I prefer sitting at the back insetad of the front) - again laughable but who knows it is possible?
- 100% online check in WITH boarding pass issued for international flights (provide some sort of online document registries where elite flyers can upload their visa/onward ticket proof, etc so that we can go straight to gate for boarding instead of making sure arriving early enough before check in closes just for document checks OR allow document checks at boarding gates).

So, frequet flyers, what do you REALLY want actually?
I honestly am willing to let go or have limited lounge access in exchange of the benefits in the list below.

I think you are in the minority about losing lounge access.
If the QFF boffins are reading this, be very clear that based on customer feedback, I do not want to lose lounge access.

I don’t know that many really-high-mileage frequent flyers, but the few I know do all wax lyrical about the lounges, and have their favourites plus an encyclopaedic knowledge of which ones to use where.

I certainly understand getting sick of that perk if you’re, say, flying out of HBA regularly … :)

No, not working in marketing and definitely not working for airlines!
The wording is terrible though, you are right, I should just add 'please keep my lounge acess' as an option. But I can't change teh wording anymore unfortunately, so...

1. Flex fares are already available that allow low fee or free changes or cancellations
2. Would be super difficult in practice
3. Ditto
4. There are some regulatory hurdles here
5, 6,7 would all be ok

I think you missed the main one. Better award seat availability

@qreality , one vote for being tired of lounges. Often very crowded, usually poor food and wine offerings.

I use them selectively these days. If I’ve got more than 90 minutes to kill then I’ll use the lounge; if not I might drop by to see how it’s sitting but I’d be equally comfy in one of the gate areas particularly at the larger airports.

but the few I know do all wax lyrical about the lounges,

Finding them okay maybe, but 'waxing lyrical'? Certainly a low bar there.

edit:certain first class lounges overseas probably excepted. AlSafwa at Doha, SQ's The Private room at Changi and for what I’ve seenAir France's first class lounge CDG and Lufthansa's first class lounge at FRA.
Qantas first class lounge at Sydney not in the mix for me until they do a renovation

If the pax cancelled or postponed the flight 2 days before departure, can't the airlines re-sell the seat to another customer (with frequent flyer) by using classic reward?

Over a 5 year period for me BA had the best FF program in the world. The ability to earn upgrade vouchers and then space release vouchers to use the former when reward seats weren't available was excellent. (That is still a thing I believe even in the about to be mangled program.) Ex EU fares combined with dire IT was the icing on the cake.

Prior to that the QF mASA kept me going for the best part of four years. The removal of the mASA sent me scurrying to BA.

These days I want lounge access, priority check in and boarding, and extra baggage. (This is scary I was carry on only for 10 years)

This is what airline-logic-thinking. Too many people...restrict restrict!

The reality is that if lounges are 'too crowded', it means the lounge is too small. i.e. the airline doesn't have the capacity to meet demand.
More elites = airline making $$.. BUILD A BIGGER LOUNGE!

My view on 'what do frequent flyers want' has changed over the years, but in my experience, the majority of airline employees have no clue what frequent flyers want. Which is why they run surveys, focus groups... and, more or less copy whatever other airlines are doing.

There is a risk aversion crisis at almost every airline globally.
Nobody wants to be first.
Nobody wants to stick their neck out.

The risk/reward ratio doesn't stack up for most airline employees... management included.
Nobody gets a % of the upside -- but they'll feel the heat if it doesn't work out.

Mr Seat 0A and I use every last kilo of our allowance on some trips - mainly those to visit Seat Son in the UAE. The weight of bags quickly adds up when you take 10 bottles of wine and various other food items he misses from home! On one occasion we boarded with 115.6 kg used out of our 116 kg allowance. Even the check in clerk was impressed.
I’m currently a WP and have been either WP or P1 for at least 15 years, so definitely a frequent flyer. I’d hate to lose this benefit.
