What I ate today - the food thread

A lovely meal tonight. We had picked out a restaurant to go to in wakkanai but when we got there it was closed for the day. bombed out with the next 3. Driving back past the docks and I spotted a place and said it's a restaurant. Mrsdrron said no it is a seafood shop. We were both right. The front of the builing sells fresh and frozen seafood and in the back is a restaurant. Share tables. An old Japanese fellow in the kitchen and his wife with the help of a couple of youngsters looks after the customers. We arrived at about 1650 and were one of the last to get a seat as they had been booked out for 6pm.
We caused a bit of consternation as we ordered wine. they did have a bottle of chablis on their drinks menu so we ordered that. Turned out to be French.

Now we paid 3900 yen - $A39 for it. When we got back to the hotel I looked it up. In Japan the 2022 vintage sells for 2050 yen. But the only 2018 bottle I could find for sale was in the USA for $US35. We got a bargain.

And the shop in the front.

We shred a salmon sashimi set with an extra small bowl of salmon roe and a fried prawn dish.

The food was excellent. I think I passed muster with a couple of locals when I ate the prawn heads. The prawns were perfectly cooked and the sashimi excellent.
So if ever you happen to be in Wakkanai this is the place to look for.

Today I added to my scallop pie experiences in Otaru, Japan.

Quite tasty. Lost points as the casing is bread not pastry. But bonus points as the 2 scallops were large and roe on. Also the Japanese curry sauce was better than the Tasmanian curry sauce.
Bought at the bakery at the entrance to the Otaru station.

My last full day in Hokkaido so I wanted a good soup curry. Diagonally across the road from the Crowne Plaza Chitose was this place.

I hadn't done any research. The entrance is behind the main road with a large parking lot. When I turned the corner the car park was full and about 20 people in front of me. Thought it must be pretty good so waited. They have their products on sale at the front of the restaurant.

Only had to wait about 15 minutes.. Accompanied by a Sapporo beer.

From my seat I could see the Crowne plaza.

You can order how spicy you want to have your soup. 1-5 is for those who are not really into spice. 6-19 for those who like spicy things and 20-40 for those who want to test themselves. I decided to be conservative and ordered 19. It probably was the ideal level although I certainly can handle spicier dishes. I ordered the pork plus 7 mushrooms soup. It comes with rice which has a little curry spice in it. It was beautiful.

One word Fantastic.
So I researched the name and in all places that listed the top 3 curry soup restaurants in Sapporo it was in those lists. You can have the soup just with vegetables as well. The classic is with a chicken leg.

1.5kg pork ribs discounted and then marked down further 25% ended up paying $21 for 2 racks.

Been in slow cooker about 5 hours. I shared 1 rack with daughter and this one cooking a little more as wife likes well done.

I really have no desire to eat out when we can cook like this at home.

Bought 2kg Oyster Blade today. Think that's going in slow cooker too.

We don’t eat out all that often except when we are holidaying/travelling, but eat well at home. This was from the weekend - rib eye on the bone with lemon pepper potatoes, salad and a nice bottle of red to wash it down!

Mrsdrron always has vermicelli salad with lemongrass beef. The rest of us shared a Vietnamese crepe, ginger in ginger sauce and pan fried barramundi. All delicious.
