What I ate today - the food thread

This is called the "The Shoremen Stack" from Nth Syd Oval - it's bacon, sausage, steak, onion, coleslaw and an egg on a large roll. Magnificent.

We had traditional Japanese set lunch, these guys obviously are tired of their 'deer biscuit' diet.

Their normal hand out food.

I would think it is a cream filled cannoli with some fruit flavour at one end?

They do great omelettes at the Cellar Bar.

Cheers. Had wondered if it was a fried crepe. Probably too sweet for my liking anyway.

It's a traditional Italian cannoli - will have a ricotta filling and then dipped with crushed pistachio.

A well executed cannoli is pure heaven!

For Sydneysiders the ones from Papa Pasticceria are iconic, but the ones from 4 doors down at San Valentino are pretty damn good too.

Interestingly it's standard here for the pastry to be bubbly looking. I had them at Ferrara in Little Italy in New York ('the' place for them there) and the pastry was smooth.

Be warned! There is a lot of average cannoli out there!

If you're in Melbourne then Brunetti's are good.

They also come filled with vanilla or chocolate custard. I've seen Nutella (ugh!!) ones too.

Don't often frequent those markets (a bit crowded and there are generally better options in Canberra). But will convince a friend to secure some for me next week!

On Friday night, after my wife dropped our kids to my parents for the weekend, we had a leisurely quiet dinner together with wine.

As usual, our local Thai catered and we were blown away by how good it was (and always is) - Spring Rolls, Coconut Prawns and Massaman Beef Curry

Saturday night was a 40th dinner for a friend at Pony Dining in Eagle Street Pier.

Couldn't get photos of the starter plates as they came out at different times and put in front of others at the table - but the standouts were the Chorizo and Beets (baby ones, different colours, infused with vinegar).

My wife's steak - I had what she couldn't finish. Perfectly cooked medium rare and loved the smoky flavour (from the open grill).

Missed taking a photo of my main  - Salmon which was nicely cooked medium rare but the BBQ clams were overdone (dry & tasteless). They were small (so looked more more like pippies). An oversupply of white beans between the starter and this - so I left a lot of them. Must have been a special on them at the F&V wholesalers.

The dark chocolate mousse was perfect, but too rich (therefore I couldn't finish it). The let down was the plating (even though it was cut as a slice, it looked like a piece of dogs excrement - a comment also heard around the table from other diners). The peanut butter ice cream cut through the sweetness of the chocolate

Great service in the private room by Ty (there were 20 of us) - he coped admirably by himself

Late afternoon snack of okonomiyaki prepared by this lovely lady in Kyoto near the museum, then washed down with a couple of cold beers. Nothing fancy, just simple home cooked food. Think we'll be going back for more.
