What I ate today - the food thread

I am going to cheat here and not include a photo. (yet)

Maybe I can convey the experience without a visual image. I do not want to name a certain coffee place, but it is a new one in a brand new sector of the Sunshine plaza in Maroochydore, QLD.

This shopping centre has undergone a transformation/expansion. It is set on a tidal stream waterway that is full of fish. Quite lovely. But in typical fashion, the quality of the eateries on this new section is low. Seems they will rely on position, not quality.

I went with my wife, and stopped at one of the new cafes. These are nice places - everything seems great. But....

The coffee was dreadful. And I say that as someone who knows really bad coffee. But what hurt most was the food.

My wife got some sort of a "rasberry" cake to go with the coffee. It was about $6. A snack. But the offerring was atrocious. Sort of like a simple dough cake thing about 50grams with a smear of some pink on the top. My wife's first comment was that even someone allergic to rasberries could happily ingest such.

I get that some places you pay for the site. But this seemed criminal. I wish I could get Gordon Ramsey there. He would give them the serve I could not. And again, it is not about the money. But when did it become ok to serve a dry, tiny, refreshed-frozen doughball with a smear of pink and call it anything to do with rasberries?

Okay, get ready for a tidal flow of photos here from me - this week I have 4 lunchtime seminars in a row, all different places. Some silver service, some finger food. No investment managers will be named or shamed :o

The first lunch has set the bar high. Chef prepared and served:

Meal of the day: dessert. Choc fudge bar, chocolate mousse, caramel drizzled popcorn and chips of black salt. Fairly danced around my mouth, all competing for my tastebuds. Awesome. Set the bar stupendously high.

My week of lunch-based events has ended, with Tuesday bring finger food (sandwiches), none of which were worthy of putting here.

Yesterday at Tattersalls Club was back up to standard:

OMG, the beef cheeks were good. Barely had to touch the meat and it separated

Similarly the vanilla bean panna cotta was wobbly and just enough vanilla.

Great meal

Today’s meal bookended another fantastic week. Down at a place I had never frequented (Howard Smith Wharves underneath the Storey Bridge), although I had lived nearby (Admiralty Towers) in 1998/99. Back then it was run down and derelict.

Fantastic servers and one young girl who worked our table really wanted to be there and worked hard. No name tags (a pity).

Meal of the day - Kilcoy beef. Perfectly cooked (not easy to achieve with 250 covers). Beautifully seasoned and the juices....I’m salivating again.

Only one more next week and then a hiatus until July.

Yes, all of these functions are learning -based, with a lunch thrown in. I could go to even more, but get no work done - there are a couple of people in my industry from BNE who are professional function attendees (known as Sir Lunch-a-lots) - one could easily do 3-4 per week (breakfast, morning tea, lunch or afternoon tea timings), yet have no business with the investment managers. However, the industry participants have become wise to them and generally take them off the invite list. I only attend function for investment managers whom I use (around 15).

Have been to the SFM before but have never thought of seafood for breakfast...only been there to buy for lunch or dinners with cousins.

We love the place. We get our meat from Vic’s and our seafood from De Costi’s.
