What travel momentos do you like to collect and display

I just realised that I also collect Ralph Lauren polo shirts as they are often cheaper overseas .

I thought I was the only one! There are a heap of 10-30% discount codes around for RL's website. I have a dozen or so 'gift boxes' at home now from these shirts. With free shipping, there's seldom a hotel I stay at in the USA where boxes of the stuff doesn't rock up for me. I bought a RL jacket on my last US trip for around $195. The same one here is over $680. Retailers here can go jump, even if GST is added to imports, they're still going to be cheaper!

When i was in Normandy and at Anzac Cove i collected some beach sand and was meaning to bring it back and put in maybe a little bottle with some photos of my visit, customs obviously missed that as not in something so prominent as a bottle, but they are still in a plastic bag somewhere and I have probably forgotten which is which... :(

I kind of wish I hadn't written what I did now (it was not intended to be thought provoking, but clearly the Freudian side of me asserted itself without my knowledge).

They're something that many offices use. Let's just leave it at that. In fact, you could not find one at an adult shop if you tried (for sale at least) I'm almost 100% sure of that!

I thought you were bringing hotel staff back with you, and just assumed you had a big home when you said they took up little room. :p

I'm pleased you have cleared it up now!!! :p Although I guess you could use them in an office...............

And that's cool Drewbles, if it had been that I could think of much worse momentos to put to practical use... :) But it now sounds much more mundane... :(

Mr Mella collects Nike Air Max's.
I hate clutter, so just perhaps a photo frame with the latest travel pic and small nick nack (small Eiffel Tower, small Mandolin, traditional doll)

Now now, that could be terribly racist!

They are inanimate objects that if crumpled up fit in the palm of your hand. Fabric based items:)

Sorry to shatter the illusion ;)

drewbles - I am guessing that you get patches for the Scout camp shirt or rug. There is nothing wrong with that if they are classy. I just bought my son some F-16 Angry Birds patches from the Royal Thai Air Force Merchandise stand at the Pitch Black 2012 Open Day. (they know how to set up a market those Thais). I will be man-sewing them onto a polo shirt for him so he can be the coolest kid at his Early Learning Centre.

Fridge magnets and boarding passes. Hate clutter around the house.

Saw some beautiful beautiful framed butterflies in the suburbs of Jakarta, but wasn't sure if they would pass quarantine.

I'm a bit of a turtle nut, so regularly get a little figurine or such.

OP, I may have a couple of your missing banknotes laying around if you need to round out your collection. Definitely have SGD and vietnamese dong. Pretty sure I've got Chinese currency, and I work with 6, countem, 6 south africans so surely they've got some Rand lying around ....

I was going to guess those squeeze balls that you use when you need to relieve stress, and frankly what's wrong with saying that? Oh, wait a minute......... :o

My dad collects sew-on patches for places around the world (as exemplified by here2go), so I try to pick some up wherever I go. But finding them in some places is very, very difficult! When you can't speak the local language either, there could be thousands of touristy paraphernalia but still not find sew-on patches.

I sometimes pickup fridge magnets for other family gifts.

For myself, I collect:
  • Airline menus from premium classes
  • Amenity kits from airlines and hotels
  • Foreign currency

None of these are on display; the amenity kits are in two big plastic boxes in my room. I have a Star Alliance A380 model plane and a couple of Boeing plane models out which I got from Star Mega Do's, but that's it.

I used to collect playing cards, especially from airlines, but many of them don't have them any more, and buying playing cards from every place you go to gets pretty expensive (plus it's space intensive, too).

One day I want to print some of my best travel photos and frame them to put on the wall.

Postcards, in case my photos aren't great. And also photos from local photographers (from markets or similar). Sitting here I can see:
An angel from a New Orleans cemetry
Red Rocks/crazy rocks mear Boulder, CO
Milenium Bridge in London
Chintown in Singapore
A postcard of a cool tile from the V&A
Sketch of verandahw in the Frenc Quarter, New Orleans

Other postcards, maps, and photos are thoughout the house. A pic from Versailles in the laundry, La Duree macarons in the kitchen, Virgin Mary & baby in Amiens cathedral in the loo, Venice watercolour, Amsterdam canal view, Berli. Wall, Venetian mask (from Vegas) & postcards in the dining room. Maps of San Francisco amd New York in the study, more V&A postcards around, Nepali fabric painting, Eiffel tower at night & multiple Venice in main bedroom/ensuite. Ooh, also Fiji and more Venicein hallways.

What can I say - there were a lot of nails in walls in this house & so many picture frames to use!!

I generally travel domestically, so I've been picking up a stubbie holder from each little town I go to. Started when I did a JASA to get over the line for SG, went to Canberra and back in the same evening, figured I should at least bring something back.

heh no, they're not patches either (used to collect those as a kid; wonder if they're worth anything now!).

Christmas decorations for me. Ones like decorated eggs from Austria before we has bird flu, african beaded ones, RCMP from Canada, a moose in a float plane from alaska, ones from Paris, Venice a wee little gondola. It is nice to pull them out each Christmas and add this years to the collection. Eventually I hope to have a whole trees worth!

I used to collect book matches from hotels and restaurants in the 1980's. I had them displayed in 2 large glass jars in my bar area. Since the ban on smoking in most public areas these days you rarely see them anymore.

They had been there for many years and one day my wife wanted to light a small camping gas burner. She found that they had all absorbed moisture and wouldn't light, so she chucked them all in the bin.

Arrived home from work...went to the bar for a beer and found 2 large empty, but clean glass jars.

Slightly OT but book matches would not be a good momento to collect and fly with these days if they were available, they are prohibited goods on aircraft.

I have been collecting match boxes since 1970, have probably a thousand, they are in a very large glass coffee table in our family room, only added to on a rare occasion now that matches in restaurants and hotels have basically disappeared.

I also collect small ginger jars and elephants ( ceramic or pottery - not the live sort !!)

Oh and shoes ......... I usually buy a pair of shoes (or 2 :D ) each trip.
