What's the beef with Halal?

Re: Qantas / Emirates tie up (Partnership inc. Codeshare, Status)

as oz_mark said.

I found these lines interesting,
"Virgin Australia does not serve pork on flights to and from Abu Dhabi and all meals that are prepared are halal accredited, with meat prepared in a way prescribed by Islamic law."

Another great piece of reporting in that article says it was a merger.

It might be of interest to AFF members to know that story arose because the journalists asked us on the trip what members were saying about the tie up ;).

Did you request that they thoroughly fact check before publishing or give them a sound bite and say interpret how you like? ;)

Re: Qantas / Emirates tie up (Partnership inc. Codeshare, Status)

I wonder if the issue with ham on flights to Dubai relates to what would hapen with leftover meals, which I guess are normally disposed at the port of arrival. This would effectively be import of pork which is very strictly regulated in Dubai and Abu Dhabi - and banned altogether in the other emirates. I can't recall pork on the menu on any airline's flight into DXB.

Cheers skip

That makes a lot of sense Skip.

Re: Qantas / Emirates tie up (Partnership inc. Codeshare, Status)

I'm not sure I can fly with an airline that doesn't serve bacon for breakfast!...........and no pork sausages.

Re: Qantas / Emirates tie up (Partnership inc. Codeshare, Status)

Whilst I have no problem with offering a culturally approriate meal option on a flight I do not see why non-Muslims should not have culturally appropriate meals too, including the option of pork if they wish to eat it as this reflects the multicultural nature of Australia. Why, also only serve halal-slaughtered animal products: many see this method of killing animals as cruel.

FInally, if QF can manage to change a whole menu to cater for a minority passenger group (they are entitled to have an acceptable meal: I have no problem with that, only the imposition of it on everyone), why can't QF get its own meal options for its own pax right? In particular, why do they insist that a VGML (vegan meal: no milk, cheese, butter, chocolate eggs etc) is an accepteable meal for someone who has ordered VLML (lacto-ovo vegetarian i.e. milk, cheese, eggs, butter, chocolate etc): especially wrong for premium pax who have paid a lot of money for extra comforts including good food.

Have you considered the fact it is simply because of the region being flown to? Do you think Dubai has catering that isn't "halal accredited"? you are also comparing it to something that is part dietary related so you can't compare it. does Halal slaughtered meat taste any different? I see Virgin do the same too.. How many other airlines follow the same practice?

Also in your day to day eatings, how often do you think you eat "halal accredited" meat?

Its illegal for a traveller to import pork, however a non Muslim can buy pork in the uae. Basically some supermarkets have a small store inside that exclusively sells pork products. Have seen it, but never walked in (had freezer containing meals like pizza etc, chilled ham and bacon etc etc)

Re: Qantas / Emirates tie up (Partnership inc. Codeshare, Status)

I will have to go 24 hours without a pork pie but I wonder if the Scottish clansmen will be able to survive without Dundee cake and whisky marmalade. I can imagine Neil Perry will need to very innovative with new menu choices. Of course we all know that alcolhol evaporates during the cooking process so is it really a problem, Qantas?

How often is alcohol used when cooking food? Very rarely when I cook ... But yes, in some places it is used extensively.

And why does Neil need to be inventive? The menus barely have pork already, and I suspect alcohol usage during cooking is minimal or non-existant.

Re: Qantas / Emirates tie up (Partnership inc. Codeshare, Status)

Most classic French sauces use red or white wine and I suppose even white wine vinegar wiil be banned. Who would order Tournedos Rossini without Madeira in the jus? ...........and goodbye to balsamic vinegar in all its forms! Gazpacho without sherry vinegar?
Since almost all forms of vinegar originate from an acetic fermentation of alcohol they will have to go. I'll be interested to see Neil's substitutes for rice wine and rice vinegar.

You are assuming they don't already use substitutes for much of this anyway.

Re: Qantas / Emirates tie up (Partnership inc. Codeshare, Status)

My point is that it would be better to have a choice (which may be preferred by a majority) rather than a substitute (which may be chemically altered) to suit a minority.

Re: Qantas / Emirates tie up (Partnership inc. Codeshare, Status)

Again you are assuming they don't already use substitutes and as for the majority I reckon most will not know that substitutes may have been used and if you didn't tell them they wouldn't know their meals were halal. Besides considering the great number of people already flying middle east hub airlines which already do serve just halal (excluding El Al of course) the people have voted with their feet.

Strangely enough there is not much call for said ingredients in cuisine of the region, which is what the menu is based on, Malaysian food is also very well known for its taste and quality, and has the same limitations, not to mention Indonesian.

I think that Vinegar in its various forms is Halal anyway

Re: Qantas / Emirates tie up (Partnership inc. Codeshare, Status)

Thank heavens for small mercies. At least we won't have to suffer non-brewed condiment (from the English Temperance era) in our salad dressing!

Re: Qantas / Emirates tie up (Partnership inc. Codeshare, Status)

If you seriously have a problem with the lack of meal choices not containing pork or alcohol for 22 or so hours then that is truly ridiculous. There is such a variety of food that can be made without those two ingredients that surely for the 4 or 5 meals on board it really isn't necessary to mourn the lack of it in your diet for that day!

If you won't fly Qantas, no need to grasp at straws, just go somewhere else.

I have suffered many deprivations over the years in the cause of travel but, thankfully, I have retained my sense of humour. Bon Appetit!

I wonder though, if none of this was mentioned, would anybody notice?

In short - NO

I can just see the FA's in F decanting Johnnie RED into empty Johnnie BLUE bottles halfway into the flight, and seeing if anyone could tell the difference.

Oh, no... please don't give them any ideas...
