What's the beef with Halal?

Re: Qantas / Emirates tie up (Partnership inc. Codeshare, Status)

Have you considered the fact it is simply because of the region being flown to? Do you think Dubai has catering that isn't "halal accredited"? you are also comparing it to something that is part dietary related so you can't compare it. does Halal slaughtered meat taste any different? I see Virgin do the same too.. How many other airlines follow the same practice?

Also in your day to day eatings, how often do you think you eat "halal accredited" meat?

Following from your comments it should be possible to get non-Halal meals loaded for flights from Aus & UK if not from DXB.

It is not about the taste but about animal welfare and cruelty: I know that to eat meat animals are slaughtered but there are less cruel ways of doing so.

By all means have a Halal meal option on flights (and this has always been the case as a special meal) but just be respectful of everyone and not impose it on those who do not agree.

Good Comment

Qantas isn't going all-halal, there are only a handful of flights that will be halal. But nlagelle does ask an important question ... A good portion of the Australian (and UK) meat food chain is already halal accredited, just not labelled as such.

As far as I have been able to ascertain, no airline that flies to Dubai carries pork meals on those particular flights. Perhaps there is a reason for that.

Keep in mind that it only affects flights going through Dubai, all other airlines do it (indeed Virgin do it on flights to Abu Dhabi).

Also, keep in mind, on the other side of the coin, Australia has some quite specific rules on what foods can be brought here.

Australia has rules on what foods can be brought into the country, not what meals can be served onboard there is a difference. Likewise the UAE doesn't have rules about what airlines server on flights into/out of the UAE. This is a commercial decision by Qantas, simple as that, and is really no different to what they do on any route they fly, which is tailor the menu to suit. As I and others have mentioned before, save the absence of bacon at breakfast I reckon if you didn't tell people the meal was Halal most people wouldn't have a clue. It will be the same old, chicken or beef, chicken or beef.

One would think that the airlines would have to take into consideration how they may dispose of leftover meals at the transit points though?

My understanding is that all the waste off an international flight into Australia will be either autoclaved (100C at 30 minutes) and disposed of, or simply incinerated. AQIS takes a pretty deep interest in the process of aircraft cleaning and waste disposal - both from the cabin and the galleys.

I recall on a tour of the Caterair kitchen in Cairns around 1996 we were told that all international waste was incinerated. Of course that was a while back , and these days autoclaving might be seen as the more environmentally preferred solution.

Re: Qantas / Emirates tie up (Partnership inc. Codeshare, Status)

Strangely enough there is not much call for said ingredients in cuisine of the region, which is what the menu is based on, Malaysian food is also very well known for its taste and quality, and has the same limitations, not to mention Indonesian.

The menu didnt look very middle eastern when I saw it. I agree alcomohol does not feature in Mid Eastern cuisine much but pretty much any french inspired dish will use alcomohol. Sadly french inspired dishes are already lacking from Neil Perry's menu.

Similarly to the issue about bringing pork into Dubai - Only halal meat can be imported into the Emirates.

Not sure about F or J, but in Y, isn't it usually just a choice between beef, chicken, sometimes fish, and vegetarian anyway? We certainly don't get pork very often.

A slice of manky bacon with breakfast would be the most common one in Y. Maybe a pork sausage as well, but think theyve switched to beef ages ago. I've been trying to think of other you examples, and I really can't think of them. I may have had a sweet n sour pork type dish once, but I'm really not sure if that was onboard or I'm just craving it. Lmao.

Actually Skip, that cannot be true. I was in Dubai in December and they had both Ham Steaks and Bacon available in the Exec lounge. They were in a separate section to the rest of the breakfast food, but they were certainly there for anyone to eat. (They also had beef bacon for the Muslims).
