What's your prediction on the Australian Dollar?

How does 0.869 work for you??

As at what date? Today, next week, next year....

And for what currency pair? (Ok, I suspect you mean the USD/AUD or is it EUR/AUD (optimistically speaking).

Given the never-failing financial rule of thumb - taxi drivers - we are nowhere near the bottom yet for any of the major cross rates. Normally you know you've hit bottom when BRW or SMH have a front page proclaiming $A to plumb new depths.

What's the next reserve currency ? Chinese Yuan ?

Reminds me of the late 1980s joke;

"Just as the NY 2000 fireworks finish a man walks into a bar at Mt Isa and asks how much for a schooner? "950 Yen" calls the bar maid.

In 1989 virtually all 'experts' (IMF, World bank, etc) dubbed the next hundred years would be known as the Japanese Century, as Japan Inc seemed to be unstoppable. Two years later things had changed and the Japanese stock market was in the 79% decline from its peak. Now over 20 years later it is just about 45% of its peak level. Residential and commercial property prices fell by up to 75% as well.

"The bigger they are the harder they fall" - China has a lot of problems that can only be swept under the carpet for so long. One thing is for certain there will not be a Chinese Century.

I think those who studied Ancient History would suggest there has already been one.

Personally I think trying to pick winners is a fools task but themes are an easier bet. It may not be a Chinese Century but it is likely to be an Asian one.

So the Aussie Dollar is currently below the point which makes Importers and Exporters happy.

the dollar will go back up again now... just bought another 100k USDM miles, at +~$300 more since the dollar dropped from .94 to .87

they've extended the offer till 12 October, but I thought better to buy now than if the dollar drops more. but thanks to me that shouldn't happen for the rest of you now :)

I always thought the sweet spot was around .75c but what would I know?
A company I worked for many years ago was happiest when the dollar dropped to ~ .50c because all their contracts were written in USD. It was there we were told anything above about the 75c mark and the company would be losing money.

I would be very happy with a lower dollar. So would be Australia's (wine) exporters

Rupee anyone?

I predict it will continue to drop - should hit 82c. The offshore capital that was previously invested here is departing for other shores. Get your AA & USDM purchases done on any drop in the USD, because that's the only way the AUD will strengthen

Any views on the AUD v Yen? Seems both are dropping in unison against the USD. I've purchased a enough to cover an upcoming trip but may need to pick up some more, no later than Jan 15.

Fundimentals, fundimentals, fundimentals; they ain't there for OZ!!! When it really hits home that we have very little behind the curtain i think Keatings banana republic will ring too true. Not aiming to be pessimistic, but i work in the mining/metals industry and the worst is still yet to come for us. Even when the RBA is talking 75c that is scary enough, but we have gone back to the 70's with little manufacturing but big holes in the ground, wheat fields and tourist attractions. Our own airlines cannot even make a profit!

So buy now and store up. I bought physical USD at $1.07 because it was not rocket science that it was all to do with Fe and when China dropped off our dollar would follow.....
