What's your Uber experience?

I had a "fun" experience with Uber in Chicago recently. Was on my way to the airport to catch an international flight, when the driver lied to me saying that he needed to get gas. My protests seemed to fall on deaf ears. Once he had pulled into a petrol station just off the highway, he walked straight past the pumps into the shop - where he bought an X-large coffee and started chatting to the cashier (whom he clearly knew).

I guess he meant that he needed fuel for himself - not the car ;) Luckily, I didn't miss my flight!

Did you make a complaint and rate him as a zero? That's not on when en-route to an int. airport.

So with the new app are they using "grey tool" so that they can show more cars than there are and then cancel?

IIRC, I definitely gave him a low rating - but not a 0, since he was actually very friendly, the car was clean and he voluntarily helped me load and unload my three heavy suitcases. So in all fairness, he deserved some points for that!

Anything other than five stars is effectively a zero. Drivers get kicked off the platform at 4.6 stars.

But definitely worth a fail. That is atrocious behaviour. You have to pay for the delay, you waste time on the way to a flight, your request to continue was rejected. A complaint to Uber is in order, if for no other reason than to get a refund for the time he spent getting a coffee and chatting.

If I have to refuel or get a coffee, it's definitely between passengers, and if I get a ping, I'll abandon the servo to avoid delaying my passenger, whom I assume is watching on the app. Sometimes it will take me several attempts before I get my coffee!

This driver needs to be off the road. Anything less than the minimum rating plus a complaint is a disservice to the rest of us.

Can you pause the meter (time calc) if you do net to get fuel ??
I don't know of any way to do that. As a cabbie, I'd frequently pause the meter at red lights and such if I thought the passenger was anxious about the fare. Public servants and business folk, not so much, but I always felt for pensioners getting the groceries home, or students counting their notes.

Sometimes I'd get people telling me to stop the cab because the fare had reached what they could afford to pay. I always refused, stopping the meter, but continuing on to their destination anyway.

Maybe there's some setting or menu item I could use to pause a ride, but I haven't discovered it. It could occasionally be useful, like if I'm stopped at a random breath test or something.

But stopping for fuel or coffee is definitely something I have full control over, and it's not up to the passenger to pay for my convenience.

So Uber drivers are on strike in BNE and MEL today - kinda ironic isn't it? First Uber are screwing the taxi industry into oblivion now their own drivers are on strike cause they too are being screwed into oblivion!

But seriously who thinks anybody can shuffle the first 20% of their revenue off to a governing body and still make any profit? Just a fabulous business model aint it? Fabulous for Uber that is!

I was new to Uber last month and first ride was with a full time Uber driver former taxi driver. He was really happy with it. I'm betting he wouldn't want to be on strike today.

Not the first time Uber have entered a market, signed up drivers and then cut the rates.
They've also just done it with the UberEats couriers

Caught my first Uber from Brisbane to Gold Coast yesterday. $104 all up in a comfortable and clean Camry for the 80km trip. No way I was gonna take a cab at $250-300!!

I changed my airline bookings to predominantly Saturday to get away from the BNE-GC late night travel problem with a view to just sitting on a train for circa $30. The train however, is an absolute PITA as they always schedule track work over the weekends which adds the problem of the bus shuttle around the works, which is really chaotic even though they should be well practiced, plus adding at least another 1/2 hour to the journey ... which already is 1/2 longer than a drive. I'm now thinking of just Uber the trip and be done with it. Door to door, no hassles (hopefully).

No problems getting cars in Brisbane this morning.

I have some friends who do Uber casually in BNE and MEL. They all basically say the same thing, when Uber entered the Aussie market everyone made money but since they slashed the rates in order to take higher share from the taxi industry, at the expense of the drivers who still pay 20% so now many drivers only work on weekends or at pick times when surcharge applies.

Personally, even if taxis will end up costing as low as Uber I'll still chose the latter because they try harder. Pre-Uber days one would have to use Hire car in order to get clean car and polite driver who offers a bottle of water or asks for the preferred radio station. These days it's more or less the norm with UberX.

We got pulled up by police in Macau yesteday morning....2 minutes after getting into Uber car....apparently Uber is illegal in Macau. They took my details, called a taxi and send us on our way....can't say the same for the poor driver!

Apart from the above incident in Macau recently, all my experiences with Uber have been +Ve....according to my app, I have taken 14 Uber trips (Sydney, KL, Lisbon, HK, Singapore, Macau) todate
