What's your Uber experience?

Havere
Have reported it to Uber. I was a bit lost as when I looked at my app it appeared as if we had never been picked up. Assumed it was an error.

However it was the receipt this morning that shows us getting off on the side of Citylink that made me recall his phone activity and he mistake becamce obvious. That was my colleagues first and maybe last Uber.

Yeah. One of my favourite things about it is that it is cashless. In the event of an error (in either direction) the fare will get rectified. So as a lesson to everyone, never pay cash for an uber trip.

I agree entirely. It's such a pleasant experience to pull up and just hop out rather than waiting for a cabbie to fumble with the eftpos machine. Last cab ride I was told the machine wasn't working so I responded that he may have trouble then, as cards are all I have. Miraculously, the machine suddenly started working again.

In Canberra (at least) it's illegal to drive without a working CC machine. The reason cabbies say the machine isn't working is because they won't be reimbursed by the cab owner until the credit card company has paid out sometime in the future, and in the meantime they need something to eat.

As an Uber driver, that's one of the best bits. I can pull up at the airport, end the ride and just leap out and get the bags out of the boot. When a passenger is running tight on departure, those seconds count!

Pete, gone in six seconds

Now finally Uber commence in Cairns 1st March, will be using them that week on return from DPS.

Excellent news! Where did you hear that? I fly in on March 1 so I might be one of the first to use them!

From the UBER site, it's not March 1, but March 16. I'm still a happy chappie!

[h=1]Cairns, your Uber is arriving soon[/h]February 15, 2017 Posted by Mike

Whether you’re heading to the Esplanade, the northern beaches or the airport, getting around Cairns is about to get a whole lot easier.
From Thursday 16 March you’ll be able to request a safe, reliable, and affordable ride whenever and wherever you are in Cairns! All you need to do is download the Uber app before launch.
And if you want to share rides in your own vehicle to earn some extra money, you can sign up to drive today here.
Evolving the way Cairns moves
We know Cairns has been underserved by public transport and getting around the local area hasn’t always been easy. In fact, for most residents and visitors, getting a bus isn’t an option and getting a taxi may not be all that affordable. Whether it’s getting to work or out for dinner with friends and family, most residents and visitors in Cairns have come to rely on driving to get from A to B.
Soon that all changes
From 16 March anyone, anywhere can push a button and get a ride in minutes in Cairns.

As we have seen in more than 450 cities around the world, this will transform the way Cairns moves.
The introduction of Uber will have a positive impact on many issues Cairns has been working to address for many years, such as drink-driving; access to work for those that need it; and reliable access to transport.
We’re confident ridesharing will be a huge positive for residents, visitors and the local economy, contributing toward a more economically vibrant and better connected Cairns.

Currently in KL, all Uber rides under 4 kms are MYR 0.99!! Unbelievable:)

There is actually a "rate the app" section inside the app I only found on the weekend. If you pull up the bottom driver info on the app, where it shows you all the annoying uberEats and other adverts, there was a "tell us how you like the new app".
So I said it was terrible, and the previous version was better.

The new pin drop is pathetic - always asking if you are where you say you are... but I'm always confused as to their wording and don't know where the pin drop is.. if it's the pulsating dot, or the blue dot.

In America they have started charging passengers as soon as the ride starts. E.g. they calculate distance, time and traffic and say "that is $13.12". I suppose if traffic is worse, you win, if not, you hope the calculation is accurate.

It will be accurate. There's no incentive for Uber to cheat. Well, I guess there is, in that if you pay more, they get more, but remember that Uber puts the passenger before the driver, and this way it removes the incentive for the driver to cheat. He can take you the long way, but he won't get any more money for it. Uber is still raking in their share of the fare for little or no effort, and they'd rather have you keep on coming back, than feeling that you've been ripped off even once.

Uber will be quite happy to remove drivers entirely, and they - and others - are making steady steps in that direction.

This many times over. I've also had machines suddenly come good when cash is not possible.

Uber has its frustrations at times but stepping to the curb seamlessly when the (likely cleaner and not smelly) car arrives is bliss compared to the taxi driver CC machine fumble with three different devices, its out of paper, not charged, "no Amex", not working, "don't you have cash" and not to forget that 10% cabcharge rort...

In happy news.....Uber have notified that they will refund me the $35 we paid in cash....no further questions or clarification needed.

It makes sense for them but it is nice not to have to jump through hoops or write long essays.

I'm guessing the driver is no longer driving.

some uber partners are ex cabbies with the culture that comes with that

Having said that, when corporations such as Uber game the system by setting up a offshore tax haven and paying no meaningful corporate tax, and CEOs earning obscene salaries, I can understand on one level why Uber drivers (and taxi drivers) would try to increase their earnings which are by all accounts really are just subsistence level

Having said that though, perhaps Uber is simply a different way of looking at things. If someone is out and about and doesn't mind giving someone a lift, then good if they make money out of a required trip anyway. The taxi industry seems to have been rorted by obscene gov't licence fees. Now seems like private industry has found a way to shaft the gov't of fees they possibly didn't deserve in the first place.
