What's your Uber experience?

A quick google will give estimated fair, only laziness results in one being ripped off. Oth uber and taxi app also quote fare upfront.

In regional areas there are generally fewer uber drivers and as I found out in Kingscliff in June many taxi companies don't use the 13cabs app.

I hope you rated them appropriately!
It was a taxi and probably 10 years ago, but it was the straw that broke the camel's back for me as far as taxi's were concerned. I think I've had maybe 2 or 3 taxis since. In Japan recently, I ordered and paid for a taxi through Uber.

In Ireland (well Dublin anyway) private cars arent allowed to operate as Ubers only Taxis and hire cars. So if you book an uber it will generally be a taxi, but with the benefit of a fixed price vs meter.

I googled and at the time of day I was leaving (very early morning) the predicted taxi vs Uber cost was about E2 different so I just grabbed a cab, because I heard they tended only to pick up Uber jobs if taxis bookings were quiet.

Not Uber but right now in Vietnam I'm regularly using Grab Motorbike. Very inexpensive and very fast, like being a passenger on a MotoGP bike. The riders can do everything one handed too as they hold the phone in the other hand and follow the map unless they know where you actually want to go.
I figure the quicker they drop you off the quicker they can accept another job.

Make sure you don’t invalidate your travel insurance riding one

On my return to ADL just over a week ago, at the airport I checked the cost of Uber and the other ride share options and found the starting price at $68.00!
A taxi from home to the airport is around $50 so I figured the return would be similar. So I rock up to the taxi rank, no other customers there so jumped straight into a cab and $55.00 including the airport tax and I'm home.
I really think the surge pricing thing needs to be looked at and I wonder how many punters pay too much. With Uber I could have paid up to $88.00 to get home.
The days of Uber being a cost effective service are over IMO.

What’s a standard Uber fare without surge from MEL to Southbank? Will be making the trip a few times over the next couple of weeks and wanting to know what point it becomes cheaper to take a taxi.

I think Surge is a scale rather than an on/off button so not sure anyone would really know that surge is ‘off’.

People would know when there is no surge pricing by knowing what the approx standard price would be for a particular trip. That could easily be worked out by regular travellers. So again, asking if anyone knows what a ballpark figure for this trip should be under normal circumstances.

Maybe it’s just terminology, ballpark just sounds better to me than standard as I don’t think I’ve yet had the same fare (ie standard) for the same trip ever on Uber, it’s always different but yes I could give a range. Not for this particular trip though.
