What would everyone be doing now if it wasn't for this nightmare?
I would have been in Nouméa again, drinking champagne on the beach of Îlot Canard inbetween snorkelling sorties and watching the sunsets sipping coughtails with friends at the Chateau Royale before dinner at one of many amazing restaurants which cater more to locals than tourists.
On the bright side, I have a new dishwasher instead.
A year without travel is going to pay for a lot of home improvements.
None of them look quite this good, though or be this much fun
.

Was Shimoda on your plan?
Actually, there was no specific plan. We had booked accommodation and were making it up as we went along. By now we would have fine tuned our itinerary, but it got derailed by some virus which is going around...

Still in SE 23, perhaps having breakfast at the Lazy Chef beside Forest Hill Station.

Day 6 of 35
Sightseeing en route to Erfoud.
This will be a long and rewarding touring day. After breakfast, depart for Erfoud via the montane cedar woods of the middle Atlas Mountains, passing by Ifrane, a charming ski resort. Continue to Erfoud via Errachidia and the lush Ziz Valley. Arrive to your Erfoud hotel in the early evening.

Michael Portillo walked us through Fez on one of his recent railway journeys - looked fascinating (apart from the smell of the tanneries).
Well worth one visit I guess, I personally found Fez crowded, full of ripoff scammers, and the tanneries absolutely stank. I wouldn't go back...

I had been planning to commence a week-long trip to Dakar, Senegal this weekend.

The full routing would have been VIE-LIS-DSS-CMN-MAD-FRA-VIE. Was planning to try out the new Oneworld member Royal Air Maroc from DSS-CMN-MAD, and LATAM's fifth-freedom MAD-FRA route before they withdraw from that.

(Instead I'm in CBR. It is what it is...)

I would be where am I right now. Working on the frontline in healthcare. But over the past few weeks I would have been in New York, London and a brief weekend in Glasgow to hug my mum and dad before getting back to duties.
I don’t think I ever really did take travel for granted, it always felt special to me. I think once we are through this all it will be that bit more magical. My world has changed forever...

If my plans were not destroyed by COVID, today, instead of being at home in comfort, I would probably be in some tiny hamlet in Cambodia with some hideous tropical disease - having stretched the limits of available experiences way too far...

I was meant to work on Saturday and Sunday but was stood down from that job.

it's the first time in six years I've not worked on weekends.

As someone WFH at the moment it's been a total change.

I am incredibly fortunate to have started my current administrative role in late Jan. My colleagues at my PT role are doing it hard with no income and the company is still to be advised if their employees will be eligible for the JobKeeper payment. I hope for their sake they are and will ensure I'm not paid it.

We should be on a family trip to NZ right now. Today would be our last day in Auckland before driving down to Rotorua and I would have spent the last couple of days trying to convince my dad to go zorbing.

Easter weekend we had ADL-MEL planned for Thursday night, spend 2 days in Melbourne ( Essendon v GWS on Saturday arvo) grab a hire car Sunday morning and drive to my parents near Gundagai and spend a couple of days with them as I haven’t seen them since October due to the Bushfires and now this. Wednesday morning we were due to drive to CBR and drop the rental off and then we were heading to the Philippines for a short break before flying back to MEL in time for the ANZAC Day Essendon v Collingwood game.
Instead I’m working and squirrelling a stack of money aside for whenever travel starts again

Right now I’d be on a train from Nuremberg to Strasbourg and then to Colmar to bring my DONE4 to a close. Just a TGV to CDG to get me home via LHR and SIN.
I had also booked to go to Alsace,
...we were leaving 02.06 - except I had booked the whole shebang. 2 months of bliss.
Our first ever J flights, Syd to Paris, our accommodation, and even some skip the line tickets in Paris, then internal flight to Toulouse, and a lovely stay in Carcassonne inside the castle walls, a visit with my french pen-friend, :( , then to Avignon, and some lovely tours around Provence. Then Nice, and a flight up to Strasbourg and to Colmar for a gorgeous week. I was SO looking forward to that. Next I had booked a Rhine River cruise...we were going to make our way to Zurich from Colmar, it's not far, and take the boat up the border river country to Amsterdam, where we' hop off and fly to Nuremberg. Yep, I booked those tickets too. My husband and I have always wanted to go to Nuremberg, and I planned it to the n'th degree. Then Munich, Innsbruck, ...and to Venice. It was Lombardy that started me getting worried...a bit close to Venice. I needn't have worried that it was close...it got swallowed up and spat out! Then we were going to go to Rome, 5 blisfful days of restaurants and archaeology. Next to Sorrento to rest before our trip home from Rome, on Qatar - I was SO excited about that.My very first REWARDS flight, J, with Qatar. I jumped around the room when I booked it.
I nearly expired with disappointment as I cancelled all these things..... sights, tours, accommodation, flights...everything I'd planned for 2 years. Our trip of a lifetime, the first away without our sons, just husband and I. It was going to be wonderful.
Now I'm left chasing money, emailing people I don't want to ask, fighting airlines. It's disappointing. It's depressing. It's diabolical.

It's destiny... How do you solve a problem like Corona?
Agreed. I have to believe it was better this way (or I might cry.)
I don't know. Love to know how I'm ever (or WHEN I'm ever,) going to be able to recreate our holiday.

Those of you that were planning to goto Colmar, when you do eventually get there be sure to explore the rest of the area too e.g. Riquewihr, Ribeauvillé, etc.

The Château du Haut-Kœnigsbourg , fairly close by, is also worth a visit if you have time. Some stunning views from it.

We would have arrived back last night from a week hiking/kayaking in Abel Tasman National Park, NZ. We have rebooked it for same time next year (fingers crossed) On the plus side we haven’t been at home for Easter in years and didn’t have to put our cat into boarding - we miss her a lot when we’re away. She could care less 😂

Tokyo this week on the new Virgin Australia service from BNE, then Shanghai for football (soccer). Two very new places for me and definitely bucket list destinations. Hopefully the points I'd used to book the whole trip in business will come in handy another time...
