Why masks in airports?

Plenty of data on infections, hospitalisation, death, suicide rates, GDP, health spending, some on seroprevalence in countries or states with different approaches
Unfortunately none of those observations are related to the question which is : where is the scientific data to support covid policies.

but she was appointed by the Donald...
So any judge appointed by Donald is bad whereas any judge appointed by his political opponents is good?

Suggest reading the Order to get the actual opinion rather than attacking the judge.

Its called separation of powers and basically while emergency mandates can be enacted like here in Aus, the legislative powers of parliament/congress should not be usurped or delegated for 2 years. At some stage in any emergency such policies should always be put to a vote.

There are much more things worse than not wearing masks to explain covid severity ..

Detailing the facts relating to COVID only seems to confuse some AFFers. Will this practice cease soon?

It appears that the mask mandate made domestic air travel in the usa more dangerous and increased the chances of diversion.

I can understand that anti-maskers in the US may be rather prone to bad behaviour on aircraft. 😕

Sweden now ranks number 57 of 220 countries in covid deaths per million population. Several close countries have a higher mortality rate - France,UK,Italy,Spain,Belgium,Portugal and Greece.

When comparing Sweden to Norway,Denmark or Finland there was another important difference. those countries closed their border to everyone except returning citizens who had to quarantine, Sweden left it's borders open to all EU countries Plus the UK.

Recent evidence paints a very different reason for the great mortality. 75% of all deaths from Covid are in countries where 50% + are obese.

The whole report can be accessed by downloading the link in the second line of this report.
Though this is likely confounded by countries' affluence and normal life expectancy. Most reported Covid deaths to date are in developed countries and in older people

Wouldn't be surprised if you plotted all country's obesity point prevalence (unadjusted for age) v normal life expectancy (or obesity v per capita GDP), you might find a similar distribution. The first would be counter-intuitive but there are relatively low levels of obesity in Africa etc.

Edit: made the graph with wikipeida info. Not as clear-cut as @drron's but demonstrates the counterintuitive confounding effect

Antimask Karens shouting in the aircraft spreading the germs around more than people sitting quietly. Plus other people taking their masks off to eat/drink. First Class time without mask is longer due to the degustation menus. Forcing 2 year olds to wear a mask which they won't then the family gets kicked off.

All a bit of a farce.
Better to just suggest to people. If you want to wear a mask use an N95. Otherwise masks not compulsory.

CDC is yet to do a proper study on the validity of the mask mandates. Its last mask study is a very poor one. And I thought the CDC is one of the premier scientific institutions in the USA. = Where is the science?

I think some posters have gone way off track with this thread. My original question was why do we have to wear masks in airports when it is not a requirement in supermarkets?

Because the Covid virus is ineffective at infecting people when they are in the normal shops or supermarkets but when in a large airconditioned shopping centre adjacent to some aircraft the virus is suddenly more virulent and able to infect more people. Can't you follow the logic?

Just one of the numerous perplexing and illogical anomalies and rules that are nothing to do with science, medicine or any logical risk based management, that we saw right from the start of the pandemic, not surprising at the start of a pandemic, but not really useful or logical now 2 years in.

Part of the answer - at least in theory - is in my post number 4 of this thread. Different dynamics in a supermarket, and people going to the supermarket are able to manage the time of their visit according to their risk appetite. Can’t necessarily do that at an airport.

Other high risk and close-proximity settings also have mask requirements such as public transport, hospitals, health care outlets.

I'm sorry ......... but I dont agree with this logic.
I have never considered what would be the safest time to visit the supermarket and neither would the vast majority. Hwever, I certainly do agree with the previous poster Eastwest101's theory :)

That might be you. Many other people do go to the supermarket when it's quiet to avoid the queues. it saves time, and of course if you were minimising covid risks that would also make sense.

The other thing is the option to change your supermarket visit. If you got there and saw queues like SYD airport a couple of weeks ago you could turn around and come back another time. Not so lucky at the airport.

For me it's easy to see the difference between the multiple queues at airports - check-in, security, waiting areas, boarding, jet-bridge, on the aircraft - compared to a supermarket when you can go when it's empty.

What's the big deal about wearing a mask anyway when in close proximity to others?
