Hi all,
Just wanted to get your thoughts about this topic???????
Site now hosted in Switzerland WikiLeaks

Interpol has issued an arrest warrant for Wikileaks founder Julian Assange for "sex crimes".
Everyone assumed it was for rape.
But it turns out it was for violating an obscure Swedish law against having sex without a condom.

Arrest Warrant for "Sex Crimes" Against Wikileaks Founder Julian Assange Is for "Sex Without a Condom", NOT Non-Consensual Rape Using Force → Washington's Blog

WikiLeaks' Assange Surrenders, But Denies Any Wrongdoing

Getting interesting now.

Under pressure no doubt from the US government;
Visa suspends all payments to WikiLeaks
PayPal has severed its links with WikiLeaks
Mastercard will follow suit

On top of all this, WikiLeaks has also e-mailed several newspapers several more encrypted cables, as an insurance if anything happens to him, the pass key will be published.

I honestly believe that the Swedish "sex crimes" are just trumped up charges and that the US is using Sweden as a puppet to get him in. The Australian government should be doing more, considering these "sex crimes" are "allegations" at the moment.

Personally, I think that all the outrage about the release of the documents says that the US is trying to hide something. The whole response to the situation does more to undermine the US then anything contained in the documents. They have done some very questionable things over the last few years and I'm continually amazed that some people can't seem to get the concept that trashing the very principles that are supposed to make your way of life superior is not a good way to convince people they are wrong to attack you. Sinking the the level of your enemy only demonstrates that something is rotten in the state of denmark. Which gets to the campaign against wikileaks. Why attack the founder? What about finding the person who leaked the documents? I wonder why someone did leak the documents; what do they show?

Certainly there has been nothing earth shattering so far. Rudd is a control freak. There is a submarine communications cable - anyone could have found that out from publicly available ASX announcements.

Anyway, I've probably said too much. I just wish the US would focus on the main game and do that properly at a standard to be admired rather than getting distracted and bogged down in cough that makes them look bad.

What amazes me is how long it has been for the true nature of the Swedish charges to come out.Rape headlines were totally incorrect.Where are true investigative journalists?
And what about our own Julia spouting how dangerous Mr. Assange is but when asked cant name a law that he has broken.Pathetic.

I’m with KRudd, at least right now, who says that it’s the US’ fault, not Assanges. They have cough security on their cables, so they should fix that if they don’t want this info released.

I knew about the archaic Swedish law on sex without a condom last week, or possibly the week before. It all stemmed from him having sex with two 'legal' (20+) women who then found out about each other and got pissed they were just sex. In one of the sexual encounters a condom broke, though it’s disputed that he broke it on purpose, and the silly Swedish law says that’s a sex crime.

I believe they tried to charge him in august, but then prosecutor threw out the charges, then they got a new prosecutor and now have an arrest warrant, despite not following proper EU protocol and despite Assange saying he;d come in voluntarily to talk about what the issue was.

So I feel the Swedish prosecutor is a puppet for the US.

As for wikileaks mirrors, I access through Tor :D

What about finding the person who leaked the documents? I wonder why someone did leak the documents; what do they show?.

I was under the impression the cables were intercepted on Tor?

There is way too much to say in a short post about this.

I'm not that sure about any vital need to publish all 250,000 diplomatic cables (the Iraq video is a whole other thing), I suspect Wikileaks is publishing them just because they can.

At the same time many world governments (including ours and particularly the US) are debasing themelves bigtime with their hysterical (over)reactions.

Assange for Australian of the year!

Here is one bloke who has some ethics and is prepared to show the world how the leaders of the free world think.

He has leaked nothing. Others have leaked information to Wikileaks. Others presumedly in trusted positions in the U.S. government. If it matters so much then the American government should be looking in their own back yard to see who it is.

The Americans are just trying to gag the messenger who is relaying relatively minor chatter within their government. Nothing world shattering - at least yet anyway. They find this so embarrassing being caught out.

Imagine how they would react if something big was released. I wish something big was released.

Shame on Bpay etc who have succumbed to American government pressure.

I wonder what favour the Swedes owe the Americans to behave how they have.

I have no idea what Tor is, but will google when back on a real computer. However, I saw a news report that said they had arrested or charged some US serviceman over the earlier leak for documents and it was suspected the same person was in the frame for the latest batch.

You mean like for example…

Report: Wikileaks cables show Texas company "helped pimp little boys to stoned Afghan cops" - Boing Boing

Shame on Bpay etc who have succumbed to American government pressure.

I completely forgot to comment on that… both Visa and MasterCard have backed out, yet both allow payments to the KKK…

such a shame that Assange will end up being the fallguy in this overly zealous pursuit by the usa and every a..licking country to the usa, ours included.

the truth obviously hurts and those governments will do whatever is necessary to shut it down, and i'd have no doubt the americans will do whatever it can legally and ILLEGALLY to puruse and harrass anyone associated with Wikileaks.

i'll be at the sydney protest this friday ... so anyone willing to spare their lunch break supporting Assange and more importantly supporting the truth, feel free to come along.

Onya and it's so good to see some interest in this country in how manipulating and sensitive governments conduct themselves for public consumption and to get at least a glimpse at what they really think and do.

I'm waiting for the Howard regime to be exposed for what they were and regarded by their masters on the other side of the Pacific.

Again - Assange for Australian of the year.

I'm of two minds about this, but ultimately it's the person doing the leaking that's responsibility for any damage caused by the leaks. It's all well and good for us to have a laugh at what the US thinks of its "friends", but if they leak information that's pertinent to our operations on the ground it's another matter.

I am probably on the other side of the fence here. I don't support the distribution of illegally obtained documents.

Secondly although there is material here of import - I don't think a 22 year old disgruntled Intelligence Analyst should be the one deciding what the world should and shouldn't know. Why is he in a position to decide what does or doesnt threaten security?

Thirdly how is releasing information of a Saudi official communicating that he believes the US will need to use force in Iran some indication of the terrible way that the US government has acted.

What this will mean is that leaders wont be able to talk openly with other leaders for fear that people will release the information without context of follow up. I am not sure that is actually what we want.

What I do not like is that one person has now become the the arbiter of what should and shouldnt be published without regard for the implications. If tensions erupt now between nations because of this - Assange should be prepared to accept the consequences and lives this impacts.

I don't really give a cr4p about Gillard and what she has called for. In fact the only good thing that might come from this might be some humiliation for her and an early election so we can be rid of this disgraceful government.

Thirdly how is releasing information of a Saudi official communicating that he believes the US will need to use force in Iran some indication of the terrible way that the US government has acted.

In that case it portrays the US in a favourable light I guess, as they haven’t invaded.

However other good things have come of this, so far we’ve found out about an Australian who has essentially committed treason. Without these cables being released we’d be none the wiser.

Tor is a method for sending data between two computers where none of the points in between actually know the true source or destination.

A good way of thinking about it is getting a car from Canberra to Sydney. Arrange 3 drivers, one in Canberra, one in Goulburn and one in Mittagong, and simply tell each driver to drive the car onto the next destination.

Driver one would know the car left Canberra, but wouldn't know where it is going beyond Goulburn, driver two would know the car is going between Goulburn and Mittagong without knowing where the car is coming from or going to and driver three would know the car is going to Sydney, but would know where the car was coming from.

I really don't what to get long winded and boring but the US's performance over Iran has been nothing short of disgraceful. Basically all they've done is rattle sabres and tried to bully Iran into submission. They have made no steps towards positive engagement with Iran and have totally failed to recognise iran's right under international treaties to have nuclear power. Sure it is worth being suspicious of Iran but they did sign up to additional inspection protocols and it is plausible for them to be saying that the oil is going to run out we need a different power source. After all the rest of the world is pretty much saying the same thing. Meanwhile the US is going all out to supply uranium to a known rogue nuclear weapon state that refuses to join international treaties and is in a highly unstable region.

The Saudi cable might explain some if the politics behind the US actions.

However other good things have come of this, so far we’ve found out about an Australian who has essentially committed treason. Without these cables being released we’d be none the wiser.

I'm not sure who you mean. Assage? If so, I can only say that treason is a big word and that requires a lot of proof. Certainly not something I'd accept based on the ramblings of gillard or some teaparty nutcase especially since I've yet to hear of an Interpol warrant for treason.

What I do not like is that one person has now become the the arbiter of what should and shouldnt be published without regard for the implications. If tensions erupt now between nations because of this - Assange should be prepared to accept the consequences and lives this impacts.

I thought wikileaks had actually sent a list of the documents to the various governments for vetting and possible veto if there were any operational security issues? Maybe I only heard this in relation to the earlier set of documents and my memory is pretty bad.

Assagne may have published ALREADY LEAKED information, as such i think any jurisdiction will find it difficult to pin him on his actions.

And I think he was responsible enough to seek the US state department's assistance to vet the information before publishing, in case the information leaked endangered anyone/anything. They didn't want to play ball, saying they "will not negotiate".

I think in this case both Assagne and the respective governments are wrong. Assagne is publishing without consideration of consequences, which are in fact real regardless of "the truth". By doing this he's gambling other people's lives. Governments are at fault because they were the ones who failed to protect "state secrets" and is now being embarrased by Wikileaks...and they are using security as a fallback to justify their call to persecute Assagne.

So in my humble view, both are at fault, and both have much to lose. So why don't they just accept that and negotiate something rather than try to burn each other.

The way it is going now, everybody loses.

Just my 2 cents.

Just to add to this...I wonder whether various governments are actually making use and stockpiling classified data on each other from Wikileaks? As much as it is a source of embarrassment, it is also a pretty damn good source of information for them. I wonder whether they have actually leaked any information that other governments don't already know. In today's day & age of spies and espionage, anything's possible.

A double-edged sword, me thinks.

America would definitely want Wikileaks to "1) ensure WikiLeaks ceases publishing any and all such materials; 2) ensure WikiLeaks returns any and all classified U.S. Government material in its possession; and 3) remove and destroy all records of this material from WikiLeaks' databases." (as per the written reply from State Department to Assagne).

But I bet they'll happily accept the continuous publishing of other countries' classified documents.

Such hypocrites.

Of course, this is just speculation on my part.
