Will you miss the headphone jack? (iPhone 7 discussion)

Re: The totally off-topic thread

What's a 'sticker' ? Do you put it on the back of the phone to remember things?

Not sure if you remember the older days when a smiley face was denoted by :-).

This is the same thing, just on steroi_s.

I don't know exactly when "emoji" became "standardised" over the regular set of emoticons (i.e. type in the symbolic version and it was replaced with the appropriate graphic native to the OS you were using). It's good and bad in that emoji allow a greater range of symbols or pictures to be used, but bad in that there isn't a universal set of emoji yet, and short of simply transmitting all emoji as picture files rather than codes, I don't know if any standardisation is going to come yet.

Re: The totally off-topic thread

Yes; I even remember when a smiley face was actually a smiling face and not some keyboard ersatz representation.

What I also know is that my iPhone emoticons (that much I can understand) come out as rubbish when posted on AFF using the application, or Safari.

Bah, humbug.

Yep, precisely my point.

Yes, the geniuses who charge you close to .. what, A$800? ... for a phone can't write the code for a smiley face so that it comes out OK on a Windows platform. Sure!

Same mob who go ker-ching when they force you into yet more expensive Apple accessories which would cost $2 to make and charge you $30 ...

Re: The totally off-topic thread

I'm generally an Apple person (they did replaced AND upgraded my laptop for free) but the new iPhone 7 sans headphone jack is ridunkulous

They are a cunning bunch. One of the few companies in the world with a significant user base who buy their devices in the full family with near cult loyalty (without necessarily incurring the significant disadvantages of a cult).

Even with iOS 10 rounding in, a feature like universal clipboard is only useful if you own a Mac. What makes you believe that they should make it worth their while to ensure it all works like a dream on a Windows machine?

There's already another thread for that.

Most of the usual Apple users have simply conceded that it's the new way to go; besides, they get a free pair with the purchase of an iPhone 7 anyway.

Others take the view that it's very innovative of Apple to push the wireless idea, since wired headphones have their fair share of disadvantages. Hence, keeping the "Apple is cool and a revolutionary leader" aura.

One has to concede that if Apple has decided to push ahead with this idea, then there is a very good chance that the market will follow suit in a timely manner.

I'm a bit of an Apple fangirl admittedly but they make things intuitive that are easy to fit into your life.
Windows ? I gave up on that years ago except for my Work where I'm forced to use it and haven't missed it at all.

Re: The totally off-topic thread

Well I find itunes an absolute pain in the A to deal with.

That's the thing about Apple - everything "fits" with each other. That comes at a cost for some power users, however.

I grew up on DOS/Windows, then Windows. I was very used to customising things from the inside to suit my preferences. Upon installing a new OS, I usually pour through the options and switch off many "friendly" options (for example, in Windows, one of the first settings I switch off is "Hide extensions for known file types" in Folder Options).

The same goes with Android. Sure, it doesn't seem as "streamlined" as Apple, but I enjoyed having the capability to customise a lot more of the interface, with more options and quicker accessibility. File transfers were also a lot easier, and didn't need bulky software (like iTunes).

I'm a firm believer that functionality comes first before looks, i.e. better to have something that looks ugly but actually delivers function, than to have something that looks pretty but achieves absolutely nothing.

Backing up and restoring some specialist data sets on my phone is much easier with Android than with iOS.

The only reason I have an iPhone right now over an Android is that my faithful Samsung of five years recently decided to go, so my sister donated her former device as a temporary measure. Given I lack the finances at the moment and being unable to decide firmly on a new device, that temporary measure may last for quite some months.

AFF has an ability to 'multi-quote'. That is, you can select a number of posts to quote in the one reply.

At the bottom-right of each post is a symbol with a quotation mark and + sign:

llTmg7f.png

Click on that and a tick will appear:

When you have selected all the posts you wish to include in your reply, then click 'Reply With Quote' and all the posts selected will appear in the one message - ready for your input.

Using the multi-quote facility aids readability, and avoids any concern that a member may be 'post padding' to increase their post count.

Yup it's great but with the buggy APP, often crashes :(

On the headphones, way of the future. Let the cheapie android folk keep burning down their houses with their Samsungs ;)

JT? After all your OT comments, where's my Monty Python comments gone? Why were they deleted? Not acceptable.:(

That flame suit is to protect you from the burning batteries, right? ;)

Now, play nice. Don't forget that iPhone has had its fair share of battery malaise previously, including its incendiary abilities. :) All said and done, Li-Ions are getting a bad rap of recent, ranging from phones to aircraft.

That said, I'm very surprised how Samsung managed to release their device without testing for this kind of issue. I guess it really shows the extent of their load testing, i.e. non-existent.

The only thing about Samsung compared to Apple is that being it is based in Korea, they will be so entrenched in saving face that they won't express an iota of earnest regret to their customer base for this debacle. I'd be surprised if someone is actually cracking the whip right now in damage control central (i.e. I don't think they are treating this problem with the severity and action it deserves).

As for the headphones, I agree it is most likely going that way. I will miss the ability to quickly cut in and out sound / playback simply by yanking out or plugging in the wired headphones. Also, wired headphones are useful for makeshift self-defence.

I think that this is a mistake from Apple and will send many people to alternate devices.

Late to the party here. It doesn't bother me I've been using wireless headphones for a while now with my 6. Just not sure the rest of the 7 is enough of an upgrade. I like the idea of dual lens camera as its now my everyday camera even on trips, but prefer the non-plus size phone. Personally I think they should make the specs the same just screen difference and let people choose based on size preference rather than trying to force people to get the plus if they want the better camera.

Having taken out the headphone jack, is there anything identifiable that Apple have done with the real estate within the phone that adds extra functionality? That is, is there a 'justifiable' trade-off?

Or was it another change for change's (and profit's) sake?

There's an easy fix for that. Tie a piece of string between the two airpods. Maybe even tie something between the headphones and the phone.

Your a true blue Nerd ....lol :) :D

Re: The totally off-topic thread

Me too but I did update my current iPhone as I'll have to do it anyway for the last iCloud back-up to set up my new phone on Friday.
It's working well so far, Mail is much better.

What are the chances of buying the phone on Friday, big long winding queues aside?
