There is someone in my suburb that raids all the good cards before I get to them.

Same, I go to one of two nearby suburbs which have a very different demographic (older folks) however my efforts have been largely thwarted as woolworths stores with older demographics tend to have issues around scam victims buying gift cards and often the stuffing around in order to gain approvals makes it a chore.
