Y passengers using J overhead bins

Very rarely am I in J, but essentially it's the same problem front of Y, as JohnK mentioned in post 2. Because of this I make sure I'm at the gate a few minutes before boarding is called to ensure my carry on finds it's rightful space above my seat (generally front row of Y).

......and that is why priority boarding is so important to me!

Re: Y passengers using J overhead bins - a QF problem

It is annoying to see someone deposit a bag and keep walking - even before they have seen if there is room at their own overhead locker. And I have never seen QF police this. Whilst inwardly I may applaud someone who 'relocates' a bag from J, be very careful that an accusation of tampering or theft doesn't ensue. I would leave the bag moving to the FAs.

I usually try to board early whether I am flying J or Y in order to get some overhead space. If I am in J then I will close the locker as soon as my bag is in it. This stops the opportune Y bag deposit, but still leaves space for other J passengers, who will usually open the lockers to check for room so no harm done.

That's a good and simple solution; another one would be to the FAs to keep their eyes posted a little more carefully!

I fly Virgin every week, in Y but in row 3/4 usually.

I see the Virgin trolley dolleys guarding the J space probably about half the time - they are definitely more on the ball than Qantas who seem to do it only sporadically.

Both airlines need to get a hell of a lot better in my opinion, even though I don't fly J much I get others frustrations

Not that I've travelled in J, or are likely to do anytime soon, but it's pretty poor behaviour to be putting your bag in a locker nowhere near your seat. It's somewhat understandable that the lockers on the LLC carriers may get full, but there shouldn't really be any excuses on QF for bringing the kitchen sink on board and using up everyone's locker space.

This of course isn't just an issue for J class. As others have pointed out, the lockers anywhere near the front of the plane tend to be filled a bit more quickly than the seats are. Pretty self centred behaviour really.

I've seen the FA take bags out of the J bin and ask who owned them and getting no answer down into the hold they went. Would be interesting to see what happened when the pax went looking for their bags :)

This may be a little off track but it all comes down to the pace of life. We run red lights because we can't stand the thought of waiting 40 seconds for it to change; we stuff all manner of luggage into "carry on" to save, what 10 minutes waiting for our bags to appear on the carousel; we have to turn on our phone the moment we touch down just in case someone has told us what they are having for dinner and many can't wait for that. We must have PB just to get ahead of the mob but we'll still be waiting for the plane to leave with everyone else. Can we all just chill out, Q patiently and all wait our turn and if that takes a while, who cares ? Unfortunately, I know the answer already.

You really don't travel frequently do you?

I actually agree with everything you said except for this one.

I just care about getting home on time on Friday nights....

Re: Y passengers using J overhead bins - a QF problem

Definitely see this on Virgin flights regularly.Kudo to them on trying to make the premium experience premium.
Qantas staff seem so old tired and jaded they just dont give a @#$%
Its a shame Nobody from the Airlines posts here on what the policy is.

Re: Y passengers using J overhead bins - a QF problem

Virgin are in the process of fitting some? aircraft with "Business Class Use Only" on the J class lockers.

Re: Y passengers using J overhead bins - a QF problem

Doubtful. But the lockers are usually closed when boarding starts, and as long as they're not left open, the sign will be visible.

Re: Y passengers using J overhead bins - a QF problem

Bit of a dobule standard and discrepancy between actions taken in the airport (even airside) and on the plane. If someone tried abandoning their bag and wandered off in the terminal, the bag runs the risk of being treated as a suspicious object, and made the subject of a controlled detonation. Maybe the same should apply to suspicious bags on the plane itself. There must be some reason that the owner doens't want to be close to it.

Re: Y passengers using J overhead bins - a QF problem

Perhaps, if seated in j, and upon boarding you find your locker full, maybe just unload the offending bags into the aisle and pop your own carryon into it´s rightful space? If the other bags belong to Y pax, this will become immediately obvious and someone else´s problem.

Although I am usually up the front, this has not been a very big problem for me, but even so I beleive that carryon space should be directly assigned to seating to avoid all this cough.

Re: Y passengers using J overhead bins - a QF problem

No one has mentioned the stupid design of the ageing cabin interior with some of the worst cabin hold design I've ever seen across the old QF fleet. The size of QF overhead bins is a joke. This is no excuse for Y pax dumping their bags in J (I've never done it) but QF must help the situation by updating the cabins.

Eg. The 787 has some pretty sweet cabin space
