Thai protests in Bangkok and travel disruptions

I'm glad I don't have a current trip booked and hope this current situation is resolved fairly soon.

I was there in Nov 2008 and being obviously Farang was left alone or even had locals apologising to me for the inconvenience. When asked how I felt my response was very bland and welcomed by the locals, 'this is matter for the Thai people, I am a guest in your country and do not understand'.

I've been twice this year already and will return when things quieten down a bit.

An interesting part of travel is that I can read these stories and have been to the locations and know where they're talking about.

Was there on the weekend when protestors marched the streets near the intercontinental.

The only affect was to cause a huge traffic snarl in the city. .we took the bts and avoided it.

No impact to travel time by car to bkk yesterday either.

We are in central BKK at the moment after a week over here and haven't seen any trouble and the hotel staff say that they are just peaceful protests.

Will see what happens while en route to airport later in the day.

One dead does not sound too peaceful, but its unlikely to affect the tourist areas or tourists at all, they are not silly.

Such a shame...was only thinking the other day that I might go back to Bangkok sometime soonish but might hold off for now :(

The tourist area that could be worst affected would be the international airport. Imagine the chaos if the two warring sides decide to disrupt operations at BKK.

Dont most protests start off with peaceful intentions?

Too late though as this one seems to be in full swing.

having been in some of the scuffles around the world when you are in a large city it is still quite remote, on TV it's in your face

Any idea if airlines will Let you reschedule flights or offer refunds? Does travel insurance cover these instances when you need to cancel and rebook?

...and this happened in 2008 when the "yellows" closed the airport for a few days...I had to cannel a trip as the conference (with over 5000 delegates) I was attending was cancelled! My brother was "trapped" in Bangkok for a few days as well.

Geez I didn't meet him :)

During the 2008 occupation the Thais seemed to realise that if a farang stayed out of their business it was best to leave them alone.

I really do hope that they realise that harming tourists or even causing major inconvenience will seriously harm their economy.

As Markis10 says, they are not silly. They generally aren't out to harm foreigners, it's an internal dispute and a large portion of the GDP comes from tourism, at least in the other well known cities.

I was there around the time of some unrest in 2011 and it was all fine, don't think I'm be canceling travel unless I was going to no longer be insured. If still insured I'd be happy to go, the Thais are such nice people generally.

Yes, it must be getting serious now.
Looks like tonight's episode of The Voice has been cancelled.
