Should I carry on or check my wedding dress?

Yesterday Bridezilla bought her wedding dress. It was on the half price rack and fits perfectly - woo hoo, I don't have to run anymore. We're getting married in Hawaii and takng the BNE-HNL direct flight on Hawaiian. We'll be in Y.

I can carry the dress on and hope the crew can hang it up. Otherwise it will be in the overhead locker :shock:

My other option is to put it in a suitcase and have it steamed when I get there if needed.

When I chose this dress I knew I would face this dilema. What have you experienced or witnessed travelling with a wedding dress?

Never done this but I would definitely take it as carry-on. I'm sure the crew would find somewhere in the J section to hang it.
I've definitely seen this done on multiple flights when I have been in J

Looking at the size of it, will it be allowed onboard? I don't think it would meet the "garment bag" criteria, but may meet the "single item" criteria. If you have the option of getting it pressed at the other end, then the overheads shouldn't be that bad?

I would take it onboard. Given the rubbish that some people bring on, and it gets looked after by the crew, they will no doubt look after it really well!

We went for a window cabin. Will edit our upgrade preferences to be balcony or better. Won't worry about an upgrade within the window class.

It had only been on the half price rack for a couple of days. The style has been discontinued so they had no reason to keep it.

That's a beautiful dress and you must carry it on board. Can the dress shop pack it so that it can travel better? At the moment it looks a bit loose. And do you have somewhere arranged in Hawai'i to get a press/freshen up before the wedding? That way everything will be perfect on the day.

Thank you! I could have a look online for a better bag. I know of a bridal store that is near a fabric store so I could have it steamed while I shop. I could phone ahead and make a booking for the steaming.

Cabin crew usually fawn over wedding dresses (although not sure what the Hawaiian crew will be like). Hopefully you can bring it onboard, and they'll be able to store it.

We got married in Fiji last year and my wife packed her dress in her checked luggage - funnily enough neither of us thought to consider taking it on as hand luggage.

Fortunately nothing happened to the dress and the resort had it pressed the day before the wedding.

Realistically that has happened before.. More than once..
Absolutely; take it as hand carry.. I'm sure the crew would be positively obliging..

Yep a very nice dress, and I concur with others, take it onboard. With the possible exception of your fiancé, that is the thing you would least want to lose en route to HNL!

I haven't read through the entire thread, so not sure which airline you're travelling with or where to...but I have seen wedding dresses refused as carry on and being put in the hold area. Do call the airline and check. If it's a popular "wedding" destination, sometimes airlines can end up with 2 or 3 dresses per flight and are not so accommodating.

I'm not sure how feasible it would be but your other option could be sending via registered post/courier service and getting it steamed once there. That would avoid the worry of getting it lost in checked in baggage and the hassle of carrying it aboard.

IMO - Even more risky..
As for the possible loss & /or damage exposure, & without being a pessimist, surely wouldn't trust an unknown dry cleaner with steaming a dress & especially for an occasion such as this.
