The totally off-topic thread

Gee, I missed all the fun in this thread over the weekend. That'll teach me not to turn on my computer - but my daughter and garden are thanking me.

JohnK, you aren't going to do the same thing on Wed night, are you?

Well, I just got home from SIN somewhat slaughtered....... must be at work in 6 hours, eeeep!

Am in SIN the day Evan and Flashware leave. :( But an SQTalker is around and we just had a lovely evening at the makansutra hawker centre (the one at the Esplanade) followed by some quality wine tasting. :)

But I did have a tasty Vodak in the lounge :D

Hope you enjoyed your premium wine tasting :O

I don't know how any of you could think about drinking on a school/work night.

I had resisted drinking on the day before work recently but failed last night, and no we aren't talking about like 1 or 2.

I'm not sure what is worse; the lack of sleep or the too much alcohol.

I had an alcoholic blackout back when I was in a residential hall back at the ANU when I was 19 - since then I haven't drunk anything. I didn't like the lack of control. And I like to drive home as well, and my partner does not drive.

Ironically, I still enjoy going on trips to wineries - but I'll take the bottles of wine I buy to dinner parties and the hosts can enjoy them!

It's not that I have a problem with others drinking - but I just sort of gave up on it and never resumed drinking again.

Sensible beardoc - probably something we should all do...but where would we get our Amex transaction?

I swear off any drink that I have a really bad night on - so I don't drink rum, vodka, white wine (to name a few). I've never drunk scotch. My main weaknesses are red wine, burboun and beer (in moderation).

Try having a big night and getting sympathy from either spouse or children. Just not happening :p

An event like that can really change your perspective.

And no drinking can save you a heap of money. My wallet is a fair bit lighter this morning.

I too have never liked being out of control so never got particularly drunk. Apart from an occasional Bundy and Coke, I was almost exclusively a beer drinker. In 1998 I was diagnosed with (non-alcohol related) liver disease, eventuating in transplant in 1999.

I didnt drink any alcohol from May 98 until June last year when the doctors said very moderate alcohol would be fine. Now I just have a couple of beers every now and then - particularly in the QP !

Hopefully though I might make it to the Mill Hotel on Wednesday night.

Richard.

Was a pretty quiet night actually, as my host had to work today. Me OTOH am flying home on SQ F in abit - can't wait to hit the Krug again. :D

HK yum cha is fab for hangovers. :)

Now that is actually a good idea!

Nothing better than some steamed dim sums and some good Chinese tea to blow away the drunkenness.

straitman said it all: it's the combination that hurts. I oft quote QF44 as case-in-point..

This is why free alcohol is nice, but not a hugely great importance to me.

As for my preferences, I like wine the most; my first taste of alcohol was Ricadonna Asti at the age of 16. Since then I've moved to enjoying mostly white wines, more sweet-ish/fruity, not so much dry. Late harvest wines are nice. Now that I think about it, I really should have picked up a bottle of Moscato when we were at Wirra Wirra. :-| Ah well. I also like sipping dessert wines after a meal; De Bortoli Noble One comes to mind (albeit expensive stuff).

Reds are mostly OK with me, but I typically like to drink reds with food, again the emphasis on gentle flavours. I drink ports selectively.

I do not like most Australian beers. My preferences are Coopers, Cascade or James Squires; internationally speaking I like Coronas for a light refreshing taste, otherwise I enjoy the flavour of Stella Artois. And a decent Guinness goes down well once in a while.

I do not drink anything hard - tried bourbon before, hate it. Whisky was done, over it. Not too interested in trying scotch. Vodka typically mixed; I've tried it straight before and all I can say is, "it burns". A Baileys on the rocks makes a nice sweetner, especially post meals.

On that note, does anyone remember what is offered in J after the dessert course? I remember being on QF44 and the FA comes out with dessert and enquires whether I would like to drink one of four different offerings. Baileys wasn't there; they had to fetch that out of the galley. I know that muscat (not that I know what that is) was one of the offered alcohols with dessert.

Well, we are really falling behind the Amex thread...

I'm trying! I'm trying! *tries to think of 10 more silly survey questions*

Anyone here with a tattoo? Why? Some I can tolerate the majority are hideous....

What about: name the ten silliest survey questions?

Seeing I've had 2 missed calls from Roy Morgan research yesterday and today (checked the number), I expect that if they call back (which they will if they havn't yet filled their current survey quota), that I will be able to provide an adequate list.

IIRC, the last time they called it was for attitudes on crime and criminality.

After a very nasty run-in back in high school with a cask of coolabah claret, my body just won't accept red wine.

A nice midori and soda with a slice of lemon over ice on a hot day will do nicely, though.
