QFF Platinum requesting release of extra Classic Reward seats?

From the thread about the call centre incident looks like they've been back online since late last week.

That doesn't add up, they sent comms to all QF staff on the morning of Thu 27th:

The Hobart site will remain closed until we're confident it's structurally safe and any necessary repairs are complete

And later in the same day they sent the following to all P1s:

Our Hobart Contact Centre, including the Qantas VIP Service Team, is currently closed due to unforeseen circumstances. We will reopen as soon as we can. In the meantime, our ability to respond to service requests via email and phone is affected, and you may be redirected to one of our alternate customer service sites.

I'm sure I've spoken to Hobart staff who've been working from home in the past.

It was a thing during covid, but that was a significantly different beast and expected to continue for months/years. Also IIRC quite a few of the Hobart staff were furloughed, so fewer staff to get set up at home.

Can a WP request that a points upgrade seat be made available? Looking at an upgrade to business on a flight from HKG to SYD.

Nope as points upgrades aren't linked to award space and rather are space available in the week leading up to departure. If the flight is really empty it'll clear far out otherwise it could be right up until the gate if you've ticked that option.

Damn. At least the booking is now letting me request an upgrade - 54,500 points for HKG-SYD to go from Y to J. (for some reason it wouldn't give me the option yesterday).

Just curious, beyond work paying for travel in Y situations, wouldn't a direct request usually work out better?

It probably would - except that I booked the ticket a few days ago - and only now has the need arisen for J - mainly for the extra 10kg of baggage allowance. I'm not sure how many points are needed for a direct request?

@elanshin - I'm about to post a question in the Open Discussion section about travel from Hong Kong to a destination in southern China that you might be very knowledgeable about.

68.4k from memory for J on QF metal. 75k if you can find CX CR. I'm surprised that 50kg isn't enough. That's a lot of stuff you're hauling:)

Responded there.

Joys of being a technical diver - its impossible for us to travel light - one of the drawbacks of going beyond recreational scuba diving depths (40 metres) - the amount of gear we need grows exponentially - and you can't rent this sort of gear at your destination.
