I am not going to join Facebook anytime soon. I do not need that garbage in my life and I cannot understand why others do either. Why bother having friends if you are not going to visit them? Just keep in touch on Facebook and life is great.

Having a discussion with someone at work the other day and he mentioned that his daughter has close to 1,000 friends on Facebook. What can you say? Nothing.

FWIW I actually came close to joining as Priority Club were offering 1,000 bonus points/night if a member of Facebook and booking stays.

And if I did join I would not be an active participant. I am quite happy with my life the way it is now....

Facebook can be used in many ways. My son is more like your colleague's daughter.... He has way over 1,000 "friends". I guess that is how a lot of people use it.

I, on the other hand, have just over 100 and with the exception of a few... I have met all of them, and also keep in contact.

I am travelling so regularly, I personally find it a great way of keeping in touch.

Obviously, my close friends tend to get phone calls and text messages.

I have also NEVER had a single member of my staff on Facebook, as to me... It is my personal life and the 2 don't mix.

Your personal view on Facebook is completely different to mine... I do however respect it, and you are definitely not alone!!

I'm kind of in the same camp as you Boss. I do however have some work colleagues as Friends. Overall I think Facebook is a welcome addition to online life if used wisely.

There's a line somewhere about quality and quantity.

And if I did join I would not be an active participant.

I am on Facebook but not an active participant. Well, when I say "active" I mean I don't post on it very often.


In saying that, in the strictest sense you are also right in that I don't need Facebook to live a perfectly normal life. But, I equally do not need AFF either.

Facebook is a fantastic tool if used properly. I find it a very useful tool to "keep in touch" with people, but I don't share that much about myself (all PG-13 stuff).

I check-in occasionally, usually with a witty comment. But I don't feel the need to check into every single airline lounge because that is overkill IMHO. That kind of content is better off on FourSquare.


Don't ask me how many friends I have. A girl asked me that at a wedding once, lets just say it didn't go so well...

LOL, it depends. I think every now and then is okay, but not all the time if you fly frequently

When I have some more frantic travel, my non-travelling friends don't need to see a check in at every airport, every office building / site, and every hotel. It's just pointless and annoying.

Good point, I never thought of it like that, I will shut up in a few days when I am home leading a boring life.

I would have expected a New South Welshmen to have announced the football score by now.

I check into each new city/airport I'm in, that way other friends I have in said city know I'm around and we can organise a catch up.

I like checking a some spots because if you are in a new town you just might catch up with someone for a beer or 2.

I once checked in in TSV and had a ph call and then went out for a very big night with some mates.

I didn't know that a few of them had the next day off work. Big bugger was I had to work the next day.

I too am surprised at the people who have friend lists that exceed a few hundred...although I guess if you are very social and don't bother ever looking at your list, you aren't ever going to go down...Personally I have 279...99% I've met personally, although some I've met once and that's it.

I tend to check-in when I go on holidays.

Although I don't know why. My parents always want to know I get somewhere safe, but they aren't on facebook (and if they were they wouldn't be friends with me!).

I guess it's an element of DYKWIA syndrome. But maybe I should think of it as just keeping people informed
