Note the following is currently only valid for bookings made before 29th March 2014 or for travel up to June 30th 2014, when new earn rates come into operation.

For the time being, use the Frequent Flyer - Flying Qantas & Partner Airlines - Points Calculators - Earning Points

The information below is specifically for travel on Qantas flight numbers (i.e. Qantas is the "Marketing Carrier" with flight numbers "QFxx_") - I'll deal with travel on the flight numbers of other carriers later.

The Status Credit (SC) and Qantas Frequent Flyer (QFF) Points earned for travel get depends upon each individual booked Flight Segment of a route in relation to its Marketing Carrier¹, Booking Class² and "Great Circle" distance.

With QF flight numbers, an "eligible" revenue class will generally earn as for QF irrespective of the "metal" (Operating carrier) - the exceptions are for travel on Jetstar metal where only certain defined classes can earn with QF flight numbers.

Lets deal with SC's for a start. Qantas work on a zonal system and it depends on the booking class and distance of each individual segment of the routing.

For a rough and ready calculation of SC earn, use MileageMonkey;

  • Set Earning Preference" radio button to QF,
  • use the "Oneworld Explorer Validator" section and
  • check the "Ignore errors" box.

Page down to the segment earning table and read off the SC's for each segment in the class booked and add these together (this will not work properly where there are "Full Economy" and/or "Premium Economy" segments.

Let's look closer - SC's are earned based on distance and eligible booking class, this web page lists them: Frequent Flyer - About the Program - Status Credits

  • You need to know the actual booking class (or "Fare Bucket") for each segment. This would show when you look your booked itinerary up on www.Qantas.com/yourbooking . e.g. (O)

  • To calculate the distance of each segment, you can use Great Circle Mapper. Plug the routing in then read them off. Note that Qantas have some minor variances to some of these distances, but aside from a very few near the zone boundaries this will work.

Compare these with the following table and tally:

Consider the following table:

As far as QFF points earn goes on QF flight numbers there is a 100% bonus for First, 50% for Business and 25% for Premium Economy.

Status bonus may also be awarded for QF flight numbers at rates of 100% for WP, 75% for SG and 50% for PS.

All such bonuses are on the base miles only.

In the case of a PS travelling PER-SYD in economy, SYD-LAX in PE & LAX-MIA, lets assume B class for the economy segments and all QF flight numbers. In that case the distances, class, points earning and SC's for a PS passenger are:

¹ "Marketing Carrier" is indicated by the alphabetic part of the segment's flight number. It is not necessarily that of the operating carrier. For example, Qantas have a codeshare flight numbered QF321 on a flight from SYD to SCL operated by Lan Chile as LA801. If a booking is made on QF321 then Qantas is the Marketing Carrier. (The operating Carrier is Lan Chile).
²"Booking Class" refers to the actual fare bucket code. e.g. Y can represent "Full" economy, "N" can represent "Discount" economy. See the table above
³When booked as part of an "Any Seat" Award

How to Calculate Points/SC's for Qantas flights?

re: How to Calculate Points/SC's for Qantas flights? [Pre "Simpler & Fairer"]

Have you tried using the Earning Points Calculator?

It should be fairly accurate for the Qantas flights.

For the AA flights in economy look up the distance LAX-MIA on Great Circle Mapper and if you are in discount economy you will get 0.5 QFF points/mile flown or if in BHKY classes you will get 1 QFF point/mile flown.

QF Silver, thanks for the reply
What are the booking classes? Are they AA or QF flight numbers?

The Status Credit (SC) and Qantas Frequent Flyer (QFF) Points earned for travel get depends upon each individual booked Flight Segment of a route in relation to its Marketing Carrier¹, Booking Class² and "Great Circle" distance.
