Yes, that's correct. Usually, I try to fly HBA-BNE via MEL to maximise status credits, but when I'm taking advantage of the free upgrade I prefer the direct flights to maximise the benefit of the annual four free upgrades.

I'll just add (in case you're not aware of this) that even if you're willing and able to stump up the dosh there's no guarantee that you'll be able to do so. This "benefit" is subject to availability, i.e. if the lounge is deemed to be full they wouldn't let you do this. As a relative newcomer...

I've flown J with Qantas on eight flights over the past 12 months and never been offered a pre-departure drink. On at least half the flights I've had to ask to get a wine top up after food (I won't flatter it by calling it a "meal").

If you're flying Y then I guess it can be a positive. In contrast, there's a recent post in this forum of someone being downgraded from J to Y flying Broome to Cairns - and that's some flight. If that happened to me I would not be happy! More to the point, business travellers will lose...
