Not sure that's correct - you seem pretty certain with that claim that "not a known example" of it happening - I've seen Qantas grant the retention of status levels despite SC levels not being met. Not quite the same as "someone requesting it" but retention of levels is definitely possible...

If you qualify for Gold then your current QC membership is suspended and the remaining amount becomes avalable when/if you fail to achieve gold status - so there's no need to worry about taking QC membership for a short term (which I don't believe is available)
