    Scottish Independence Referendum 18th September.

FWIW the trend is actually in the opposite direction: the world has more countries than it has ever had and is adding more all the time. The EU itself at least 6 countries that didn't exist at the time of the original "common market" (Czech republic, Croatia, Slovakia, Lithuania, Latvia and...

    Extra award availibility

You didn't actually say anything about which class or which carrier. That might help. VA do have a platinum guarantee if you book 6 months out but it's only valid for Y.

Virgin and QF to allow gate to gate use of handheld devices from tomorrow

Umm, the ad i had above is very clearly advertising it. Flight mode clearly allows the use of wifi or every device on the planet would not be designed that way. Not sure why you're so stuck on this point.

Virgin and QF to allow gate to gate use of handheld devices from tomorrow

Not only does Virgin seem to allow gate to gate wifi use, they are very aggressively advertising it. As noted above it is possible to have wifi active in flight mode on most devices.

Travelodge UK removes Bibles from all guestrooms

EXACTLY! Why they let the American Gideons put the bibles in everyone's hotel rooms is beyond me. Good to see it being finally undone after all these years.

    What Carbon

Let me guess: you weren't at a Mensa meeting? In all seriousness, if you get your news from Murdoch tabloids and listen to too much talk back radio and hang out with people who do the same of course you won't have any idea. If you are genuinely interested in the answers to those questions the...

    What Carbon

The obvious way to show that "theory" and "practice" diverge around a carbon tax (note i am not referring to an ETS) is to provide an example. Let me know how you get on.

    What Carbon

Who are these "many"? Many in this context seems to means "there must be someone out there but I can't actually think of an example." As far as i'm aware there are few documented cases of significant rorting of the carbon tax. Now start looking at government investment schemes, bureaucratic...

    What Carbon

Option 1 in my scenario was a carbon tax. Option 1 in your scenario wasn't. Not sure what your point is.

    What Carbon

The basic logic of economic incentives is pretty straightforward. Option 1: You get to keep $24 bucks for every tonne of carbon dioxide you actually save. Feel free to be as inventive as you like about it. Put your best minds on it. Option 2: Tax everyone in the country and take billions of...

    Wireless IFE Embraer 190

Yes, i flew one of the old Emirates birds this week and it had wireless IFE. I think it was XFB. I do struggle a bit with those arguing that iFE is too complex and difficult to use. I guess that's the luxury of being a Frequent Flyer -- once you've set it up once you never need to think about...
