There is a page on the ACCC about misleading and deceptive conduct. I'm pretty sure the Membership Rewards program is "regulated" by the ACCC, especially as they show up a few times on the Exclusive Notifications Register.

So, those members who don't get what is advertised on mailouts (targeted or otherwise) are well within their consumer rights to complain to the ACCC.

I'm sure most people remember when the ACCC ruled on the usage of the word 'unlimited' in regards to Optus@Home plans, telephone plans, etc. Essentially fine print is the killer here.

And there is a section of the Trade Practices Act that promises about prize giveaways and competions, must be honored by sellers.

Anyhow, the Advertising and selling publication by the ACCC goes into a bit more detail.

Yep - That is EXACTLY what I was saying without getting all technical!

Thing is I cannot work out why Amex put through some QF Amex card holders as the promotion says it is a "Membership Rewards Bonus Points promotion".

You would think their internal systems would not allow it as if you are in QF Amex you are not actuallya member of MR?????

Where is the 2 for 1 business class deals on AMEX??

Its only for Platinum Charge cards firstly :)

Not listed clearly on the website anymore but definately available. AMEX used to list the prices and destinations, but then let them go out of date for 6 months before removing any trace of the deal.

Then they added back a few airlines and said call or email us for details. Now they have airlines listed and it says to call them for details

It's now called "Airline Privileges" and says save up to 30%, sorry it used to be 2 for 1 when I flew on it back in March of this year.

The price has gone up ALOT now :(

Bugger... I am plat Credit and Gold charge... Perhaps i should take that upgrade next time they offer it to me.. I wonder how good the QF savings are?

I corrected my post when I just re-checked a quote I had from AMEX from a few weeks ago. No longer 2 for 1 , instead a saving of around 30%

Qantas is not part of this program, and we are lucky they still allow any AMEX members to transfer points to them. One would say in a few years they will stop all AMEX transfers unless you have a Qantas branded card!

Anyways, back to the topic of Bonus Points

Using electronic transfers: your guide is also an interesting read.

As is this link about retrospective changes to the NAB Rewards program:

"Loyalty program promoters risk misleading consumers and breaching the fair-trading provisions of the Trade Practices Act 1974 if they:

  • advertise awards that are not available as represented

  • hide in the fine print or fail to disclose the truth about the restrictions imposed on the redemption of those rewards

  • seek to retrospectively change programs or offers to the disadvantage of consumers.

And this link about so called mistake rates - e.g. when Dell had to sell hard disks for a few cents a piece.

Hope For the Best wait for the worst

Well, when something is too good to be true ... hmmm ... To this moment no one can tell in clean-cut terms which purchases will accepted or not. Correct me if I am wrong but, most of us try to pay with our AMEX 1st and if not accepted (or surcharge) then we use other cards or cash, and this promo will not affect that. On the other hand, Without having a clear definition of min-max transactions per day and min-max spending per transaction we could be making millions of transactions that do not count to accumulate points. For sure merchants will have to pay the dear fees per transaction we make. In other words we could get nothing (or near nothing) and Amex a nice boost in their fees collection. Not a bad strategy in these crisis days
I don't think that amex will give you something for nothing. At the end of the day points have a value as a service or as an upgrade or a tax and they are not given for free to amex or anyone. I Agree with you (lovetravellingoz) and I don't think that people will get 100's of thousand's or millions of points (as mentioned at the beginning of this post) not only because splitting will not be allowed but mainly because rules are not clear. Forget about many $20 $30 or $40 purchases, or top up your car every day with fuel or buy a coffee to earn points, cos it will not work...
Do the math, Best cards offers give 5000 or 10000 points when you join-in and pay your annual fee... and Amex gave up to 60000 last offer but there was some heavy conditions attached to that offer.

Thanks for the info anyway!

I'm hoping i get credited tomorrow or something.. otherwise will phone up on Monday and get it changed etc.

We will be reviewing all Cardmembers who registered multiple times and limiting their enrolment to the original offer, or the offer they would have been eligible for had they been invited to participate.

As others have mentioned earlier in this thread (e.g. lovestotravel), why did the website (and the call centre) allow multiple registrations? Why didn't the original T&Cs of the offer, or Membership Rewards bonuses just have:

"Not available in conjunction with any other bonus offer"

or something similar?

I don't see how Amex can legally change the T&Cs of the original offer(s) and/or Membership Rewards without breaching the fair-trading provisions of the Trade Practices Act 1974.

Because they had one of the junior lawyers read over the cards before approving them to be sent out ;)

Who knows really - but a stuff up on Amex's part and probably the reason why the AMEX rep posted in here (albeit under Admin)

As I said I have a print out from the website saying I am eligible for 5,000 points for each 5 transactions

Yipee!

After a nervous 2 days waiting for the Membership Rewards Transaction information to be updated... it usually happens daily... it has just updated.

All posting correctly so far....

I have earned 20,000 bonus points so far ... mainly using it for smaller purchases I would usually pay cash for and the regular stuff...

There are 8 of us using the cards, so the transactions add up!

Indeed.

5000 Membership Rewards Bonus Points 0 5,000

Still quite a few more to post over the next little while!

Hi Beardoc,

I have similar issues where all my transactions on 17-19th September is not shown in MR yet. I have no idea what is going on. But hopefully they are not "revoking" the offer to anyone who already registered .....

Anyone else have this problem?

There are three of us now (you, myself and nlagalle) that are in the same boat here (transactions from beyond 17th September not showing. I wonder if it's systemic or limited to a subset of customers.

I'm so jealous right now!

I want in on the mega points offer!

Damn signing up for my qantas card! I wish I had a time machine to go back and sign up for a MR card before this deal launched instead!...

I keep reading in this thread people on Qantas cards getting an offer of points! How is this possible??? I can't register online? (I am a lowely free qantas amex / express)

I'm going to call in the morning and see if I can register, if they say no, I'm going to find out if new card holders are eligible... (I'll let you know how I go)

why me... why can't I get in on this uber, ultra awesome, christmas in september, such thing as a free lunch, stephen bradbery wins a gold medal - offer.... :(
