10,000 bonus points per 20 transactions

I am confused. How does Amex know what you purchased? As far as I am aware Amex does not get a detailed list of what you purchased they only receive a request from the vendor for the amount you spent. So in theory I can walk into Big W and purchase a $50 gift card and then walk into Woolworths and purchase a $50 gift card and then want into D*ck Smith and purchase a $50 gift card. All Amex would see is 3 requests for $50 at each vendor. Am I wrong?

They don't!

I think the point was 5 x $10 transactions in a short amount of time, which would be picked up at most times as possible frauds anyway, regardless of this promotion

- if yiu buy a batch of say 5 separate cash-gift cards for the kids as one transaction of $50, it registers at amex as 5 x $10 transactions as every card is loaded once. Amex throws a switch to turn your card off. And if you buy 5 cash cards at different shops, they'll say you're abusing the promo. Strewth.

Are the effects the right way around? I would have thought:

5 separate transactions for buying gift cards from one place = potential bill splitter = accused of abuse (notwithstanding I am surprised they split the transaction to Amex)

5 cards at different shops in quick succession = potential fraud = pull plug on card.

What I'm miffed at is this fraud trigger. Here I am buying the gift cards legitimately in one batch and not asking the cashier to do one gift card at a time. I wanted to pay one transaction: but Amex treats these cards like as possible criminal fraud. But if tommorrow I do what you suggest, they can say its abuse. Aaarghhh!

Update: they advise they did a dummy bill and it went thru (But do I get the bonus)????Update: The csr Tegan says I'm on 5/5 and the bonus points will post 6-8 weeks after 31 December. I need a Bex.

Having had them process some dummy bills not so long ago I can say two things:

1) You will not see them on your statement
2) You won't get a bonus :)

The cashier 'zaps' each of 5 gift cards with $10 once. Then the cash register wants $50. Amex somehow automatically assumes a crim stole my card. Then a separate question arises whether a non-crim cardholder in JohnK's example is guilty in Amex's eyes of use or abuse.

I assume that if your card was stolen and they didn't cut your card off fast enough you would be "miffed" as well  It was a fraud trigger NOT an abuse of the promotion trigger in my opinion.

So there we go the first report of 6-8 weeks from the end of December. HOWEVER, she may have meant transactions for this month and not previous transactions from say October/November

If I notify Amex at 10AM after I realise my card has been stolen and they dont cut me off until 3PM I believe that ersponsibility for the fraudulent transactions rests with them.

Sorry if this has already been stated but (i've just come to the last page)

I just received a letter from Amex saying that they made an administrative error and that I'm back on my reward 5t/5k uncapped :) and till the 31st December.

Must have been the ACCC or BFSO.

I need a Bex.

LOL. The good old days when you could have a cup of tea, a Bex and a good lay down. I remember my husband bought a whole carton for my Mum (and I mean BIG supplier size carton) before they were pulled from the market. I mean the real, you can feel it doing you good, paper wrapped type Bex.

Thanks for lightening up the thread a bit for me, people are getting a bit snippy again. I would have loved a Bex after a couple of calls to MR

Wen did you lodge a complaint wth ACCC/BFSO? if you didnt then you were probably one of the ones that got the "letter in error".

So now we begin another chapter in what will be known as the "Never To Be Repeated AMEX 2008 Boni Points Promotion"

A very nice letter though, and you are the first to post this!

What were you details of registration?
Were you invited ?
Did you enroll more than once ?
Did you receive a letter saying you were being moved to one enrolment ?

Yes of course, BUT if you didn't notice your card was stolen and heaps of similar transactions were made, most people would assume that AMEX should have cut the card off and tried to contact you about it.

I have my AMEX cut off twice overseas, and my VISA once here

AMEX - Because I was spending too much overseas, they cut it off at Disneyland.... But put it back on straight away

VISA - Because I purchased two $600 phones from a Mobile Phone shop in a short period of time, they called me to confirm it was me making the purchases. They asked me a few security questions, after I rang them back of course :p

OK. This has never happened to me as I would not have that many small transactions in a short amount of time.

OK - another update. A monster 18T over the weekend on a weekend that I did not think would be a biggie :)

Sonow Amex owe 156K.

Target at this stage has been upped as I ow need to have 360K points in my account to get some Virgin Atlantic J seats to the UK.

Currently sat on 99K with 156K accrued - that leaves me 105T short of my goal. Going to be a big month thsi month :D

BFSO says they suspect Amex is sending out erroneous mail. Eg, they send the 'please explain' letter. Then they send two letters, one saying 'bad luck' and the other is a letter like skinny got, or Hairy got. BFSO is asking Amex to confirm if Amex is really making these 'offers' or if its sending out pro forma letters. In other words, only the BFSO can find out - on a case by case basis - if you're really on this deal or that deal or 'no deal'. And Helloooo. Isn't this mess because they put an open offer on their website that Amex decided later they wanted to get out of? it looks like a right royal schmozzle will go on and on and on.

# up to and including 14/12, with at least 2 transactions to post from today. Goal is 120, so I'm back behind target :( - maybe time to consider 150  [That would make an overall target of 155K bonus points]
+ Points owed were 5,000 but paid on 10/12
~ Points owed were 35,000 but 10,000 paid on 10/12

Wish I'd had a weekend like simongr ...but I'll make up for it this afternoon when I go shopping.
