Already tried this, if you can find a dealer who will let you pay more than about $5000 to $10000 on card, let me know.

Yes, after all, they have to pay the merchant fees - one dealership was willing to do it if I paid their Amex fees of 2.75% as well. I declined and got them a bank cheque (they wouldn't accept a personal cheque).

Well I never got that option, but I did get a bit extra by paying the deposit on card and another amount when picking up the car. "Sorry the bank cheque isn't quiet enough, I'll have to pay the balance by card" ;)

If I was buying now during the current earth 3 points per $, I probably would have paid the 2.75%

And so am I. Now waiting for their promised confirmation letter - a wait of 10 working days. The time just keeps getting stretched out.

Well their promised letter did not arrive so yet another call and another reference number.

There is no dispute over the number of points involved. MR here does not actually post the point - that's done by some other department and they claim that's the source of the problem. Ho hum.

The surcharge at Nunawading Toyota was just over 1% but in terms of 'cost of cash flight vs freebie flight', it was muuuch better to grab the freebie flight . (Buisinesses have to haggle better rates with Amex. At a restauranteurs function the owners didn't think to ask the others whar rate they're paying - I asked and was told .89% .99% 1.25%, 1.99% 2.25% to 5 and 7%)

Yep $10,000 is normally the maximum they allow.

I am about to purchase a $100k car and want to put all of that on my Amex.

Happy to pay the 3% or whatever so 150,000 points for $3000 in merchant fees = around $9000 in FF flights :)

Works for me

That's around 6 cents per point. How do you manage that :?:

Not sure about lovestotravel's intentions but a few ideas:

  • Use the current Earth 3.0 per $ by March 31 = 300,000 points = RTW Business Class with points left over..by maxing distance and stops you should get close to the mark (ie equivalent to 6 cents per point in other programs".
  • Use Amex MR and transfer at 1.1 to SQ...use Saver award and 150,000 points get reduced by 15% (or 25% if you can snag one pre Sept) aand so for 127,500 you can get say a Business Class Return to Europe.
  • Or with SQ use the partner award for 150K for Business redemption.

I did similar. When paying the deposit, I was asked for $1000. I said "no problem" and handed them the Amex card. Then as they were about to put it through, I said "how about we put it through as $3000 for the deposit and that's less I have to bring when I collect the car?". No problem, they punched in $3000 and through it went. Perhaps I should have aimed higher :).

Then on the day the car was to be collected, I had a call from the dealer trying to up-sell me on the paint and interior protection package that I had previously declined as I thought it was over-priced. They offered it at less than half price and could have it done ready for the vehicle collection later that day. I agreed to the new price and said that as I already had the bank cheque for the balance of the card, they would need to put the protection package on my credit card - Amex of course. So overall I managed around $4000 onto the Amex for a new car.

After a request nearly a month ago for a points reconciliation, not hearing anything for 3 weeks then speaking with several consultants since who told me about various escalations and being made promises that I would be called back but never was, I've finally had a points adjustment that brings me to within kooee of where I think I was supposed to be. Quite strange as the points I had already been allocated didn't match any of the 3 variations of the promo.

Quite happy with my bonuses tho not within the ballpark of lovetravellingoz. Not that you would, but 2.8million points converted into $1000 credits on your card is $21000 cash, kind of puts things into persepective a little. I don't know what brainiac at Amex came up with the T&C's but all I can say is that I'm eternally grateful at 450k, so I can only imagine how lovetravellingoz feels!!!

After three months of calling MR and Platinum, I spoke to platinum again today, suffice to say they wont uncap me so: - letter is now on it's way to amex and if they dont reply within 14 days (to me seems a reasonable time), then it's off to the BFSO to seek the points owed (in the scheme of this promo, 150k isnt that many).

They'd of course settle this if they'd just pay 150k pts.

No chance in hell of making the March 31 QFF deadline.

I hope you receive your points very soon. I have received all points owing to me but only after many letters and phone calls to various departments and the help of an FSO case number. This is the first time I have posted a message but I have been reading postings which helped me greatly with my dealing with Amex. Thanks a lot.

Mate, little birdie tells me that you might be up to a big surprise. Apparently AMEX is seeking legal advice on how to deal with few people like you... By publishing all this you gave AMEX very good proof that you have indeed acquired your points fraudulently. So if I was you, I'd try to spend them as soon as possible, because they may disappear soon, or be blocked soon, or you might have cops on your doorsteps...

Though that same poster then later admitted that he does not actually know the defintion of fraud....and that he personally agreed that I followed the rules and did not do anything against the rules. .

I just wonder who is "little birdie" was..

All I can say is well done on your efforts, i was happy to collect 500k (well when i get the last of it!)

Its a load of rubbish, Loves, unless you were unlicensed whilst driving trucks thru the T&Cs. Besides, I think Amex would be guilty of reckless homicide after the jurors drop dead from laughing.

Who cares?

The poster pointed out that he/she had heard a rumour that Amex were investigating their legal options (which, if I was Amex I would too).

What action Amex takes from that (and it might be nothing) has no basis on what the poster thinks is fraud, or whether the poster thinks that you followed the rules or not.

Well I do for that poster stated:

Which I take exception to as I did not commit fraud. You may be content to have people making such claims about you on a public forum. I am not.

If the poster had merely reported the rumour I would have no issue at all....what I have an issue with is his going on to state that I have committed fraud.

Secondly if one reads my OP it does not supply any proof at all that I breached the T&C let alone committed fraud. It only provides proof that I was an active user of the promotion...a promo which was advertised as having no limits.

Thirdly, I would imagine that Amex would have taken legal advice well before awarding the points to me and in sending to me a final letter from a senior Amex Executive before awarding me the points. In short Amex have investigated me already and have advised me personally of their satisfaction and that they would award all points that I had earnt. This they subsequently did.

As mentioned in that OP I fully anticipated in advance that Amex would review my transactions simply because I anticipated that I would have great many of them. As such poor as the T&C were I followed them.

Thank you for your congratulations.

I have no idea who the "little birdie" was......but it would not surprise me at all if the birdie was actually making a general statement about people being investigated and wrongly applied the rumour to me as have already been through the process.

As we know on this forum many many people including you that are registered in the promo are being investigated (and there is nothing wrong with this) before Amex awards points.

Some were investigated and awarded some time back....some like me more recently....and some like you are still in the process.

Personally I hope that everyone gets their points owed.

Part of Amex's mnay problems is that they left the rules so grey. One should not need to have a lawyer peering over some Amex staff members shoulder to say whether or not points should be awarded.
