In reading that he spend $269 and received 470 points in total ?

and

I am a bit confused by this - does he normally only get 1 point per $?

He is on the Qantas Premium card so for $1 spent it earns 1.25 points.

But he is getting an additional 0.5 points per $1 (for signing up to MYREWARD?)

So $269 = (269 x 1.25) + (269 x 0.5) = 470 total points.

Looks like someone (me) is going to send him a supplementary card and let me earn some decent points for the next three months.

But we are spreading the word to shopkeepers:

*those that have recently signed up would be pleased that they have people coming and using the cards..

* those that do not take it might be starting to wonder why there is a surge of people coming in and asking if they take Amex..and even more so wondering why they are just walking off when in the past yhey would just drag out another card or pay cash.

Now my last point in bold..has to be worth good marketing $$$$ to Amex. The question is how much is it worth to Amex?

Here's some concrete evidence:

My local (smallish) IGA supermarket has recently (unknown to me) changed hands. In the past my Amex was accepted there but last week it was 'declined". I thought it was just a glitch, pulled out the trusty Visa and thought no more about it.

Mrs P's Amex was declined at the same store on Saturday and being more tenacious than me, she asked for the manager. The new owner approached her and explained that they'd just purchased the business and from past experience, initially had no intention of bothering with Amex but they had been surprised by the overwhelming number of customers presenting Amex cards in the last few days;).

They are now in the process of signing up with Amex.

If the aim of this promotion is to get businesses to sign up with Amex it has certainly worked in this case.

By the way Tiki is a she...and not a he...and has written some great and detailed posts in the past.

From them I know that Tiki is not blessed with the high salary of some on this forum...and so I think the jibe about her buying $5 T-shirts is most uncalled for.

Like many on this forum she has a genuine passion for travel and she has used this forum to try and increase her travel as much as she can to satisfy that passion.
Fair enough, he is a she and sorry for getting it confused

To insinuate that my $5 was a jibe is so far from the truth. I do not care how much she pays for her shirts etc - the point of my post was the fact that it came accross as being a small purchase to gain points - which 75% of people in this thread seem to be doing. Obviously it was not a point grabbing purchase and I already apologised for this insinuation... Sure, some people will continue to make the same mundane purchases and not worry about this promotion, but you cannot tell me that some people are abusing it.

Also for the record, the card that I received listed examples of purchases that I already make. This means to me that they actually took the time to check the transactions of my account and then give examples on how I can keep making those type of purchases to take advantage of this promotion. Shopping at Coles, Petrol at BP, Village Gold Class tickets and paying my Optus bill...

Good for Tiki if 'she' has used this forum as a means of gaining tips on increasing her travel. I did the same thing when I signed up over 12 months and was planning my Honeymoon. The knowledge that I have gained on this forum has been quite good

As someone else has mentioned earlier, it is amazing what free points will do to people and how it will make them act - this thread has been a good example of that and should be used in a psychology lecture

Yes, now I will go back and sit in the corner and pout and continue to lurk as I have for the past 18 months...

Cheers

ps
Isn't it frustrating when you make purchases on the card and they do not appear for on the statement 3 days later...

Thanks for the explanation, I wasnt' clear on how the points were calculated!

Thanks for the clarification.

Not a problem.

It is interesting, how the call centre confirmed that with 5 transactions earn 5K bonus points - yet a different promo has now appeared.

Anyone else with QF branded cards have this issue?

I'm signed up for the 5/5,000 promo with my QF Premium card and am getting the bonus points as expected.
It's a bit erratic due, I think to some purchases not showing up for a few days but I am getting 5,000 points, approximately every 5 purchases.

Interestingly, while we all have become advocates for Amex, we can really only spread the word to people who already have Amex cards...because as I understand it, this promotion is only valid for existing Amex/Membership Rewards members....(happy to stand corrected here if I am wrong!)
Not true, after discussing this promo at work the response I tend to get from people is "I wish I had an Amex". Whether this actually translates into more people applying I'm not sure, but it can't hurt their chances.

Hi guys, sorry if this has been brought up in the previous 79 pages but:

  • is it ok to be enrolled in both 20 transaction/10k points and the 5/5k schemes? I got the offer in the mail for the 20/10k points.
  • Is there a minimum spend for something to be considered a "transaction"
  • also are people getting the points credited immediately (give or take a few days) once their 5 or 20 transactions are up? On the letter it says allow 8-10 weeks for that.
Again apologies if these questions have been asked but I've tried, and 79 pages is too many pages to sift through some of the other discussions on this thread.

Unfortunately I have been trying since the week end to take advantage of this offer only to see this message :
We're sorry...

This offer has been temporarily suspended due to operational issues. Please try again later.

Bugger:confused:

Welcome to AFF iamdawalrus

Yes, you can; although I don't consider it to be moral if you've not received all offers..

No minimum spend is mentioned.

People have been reporting that the points post straight away.

Wow thanks for the fast reply and thanks for the welcome. Have you guys determined on what basis people got offered the various deals? Are the big card users being offered the 5transactions/5k points deal or vice versa with the 20/10k? Or is it just random?

Whatever it is, this has definately made me decide to use my AMEX more. I have an old gold AMEX credit which i was actually planning on cancelling this month due to getting the Westpac Platinum AMEX/Mastercard. I am not a huge spender by any stretch of the imagination so this is definately a good way for me to rack up bonus points which otherwise would have taken a while.

Just to let you all know that i signed up for the 5k/5 promo and have received 20000 bonus points already :) The bonuses are posted within 1-2 days of the actual spending.

I think the promo is working for me as I hunt down only AMEX-accepting outlets and walk away from non-AMEX shops.

Although I am making small purchases, I am also spending a little more than I normally would, and I shop at places that I normally wouldn't before the promo.

Now a question for those who understands the MR T&C... Hypothetical case:
* I earn >40k pts
* transferred all my MR points into freq flyer (e.g. SQ)
* redeemed all my SQ points as flight rewards
* there's a 40k cap for the AMEX promo
* AMEX reverses my points and my MR becomes negative

Can I then close my AMEX account and walk away? or I neeed to keep the account until my MR balance goes back to 0/positive?

You would not need to redeem the SQ awards I think - yes you would have a negative balance - not sure what amex would do. They cant force you to maintain the account.

1 more quick one. Is it 20 (or 5) transactions per account and not per card? ie supplimentary cards count towards transactions?

I would assume you would be able to close the account and walk away. Not sure what would happen if you were to get another Amex in the future and wanted to join the MR program again....

I have 1 primary card and 1 supplementary card linked to the same MR account. The bonus points appear to be based on the combined MR account transactions.

Has anyone actually gotten BOTH offers reflected in their MR statements? i.e. after 20 swipes, get 5x5k AND 1x10k = 35k points in total?

Is there anyone in the know who can explain the economics of this promotion for AMEX? It just seems to be an insane amount of points given out. Wouldnt qantas etc be affected by this influx of bonus points
