As noted earlier, it's a standard message. You could try and signup to "AWESOMEPROMO" and it would give the same.

2. Yep - Not much else can be said, if they decide to cap the pre 20th of September group, expect the main-stream medio to get a hold of it and even the ACCC or unfortunately Today Tonight

ACCC maybe...

Today Tonight... I'd laugh... the poor aussie battler on their QFF Amex trying hard to get a airline reward seat to LHR.

Background
Many consumers opened a Citibank ReadyCredit account in response to offers of low interest on balances transferred. Since late 2005, the fee has been applied to a number of accounts that were not used for purchases and that were open for more than 12 months.

The fee could be waived if those consumers spent $1,000 within a defined period, intended to encourage consumers to use their accounts to make purchases.

In addition to providing consumers with the opportunity to avoid the fee, Citibank gave more notification of the change than the minimum 20 days required by the Consumer Credit Code.

The introduction of the new fee prompted a number of consumer complaints to ASIC, as well as to other agencies including the Banking and Financial Services Ombudsman and the Banking Code Monitoring Committee."

From ASIC's FIDO consumer link. Maybe these three bodies can look into Amex's changing of terms willy nilly, with retrospective effect, and look at whether people who didn't get a postcard were validly joined up by amex staff or the amex computer. Also, I wonder if they can rule whether Amex can decide if a $12 round of drinks followed 2 hours later by a chicken schnitzel and drinks is
fraud or abuse'. Ditto re whether buying cigarettes at an amex-linked service station (rather than a milk bar) is an 'everyday spend' or abuse or fraud.

I've just found that I can use my Amex card to pay my monthly medibank subscription, instead of paying by direct debit as I had been. Telstra also take Amex so you can pay your bill and earn points that way. Anyone else found typical ways to increase Amex use where I might not have realised I could use it?

I have had a few Doctors bills recently that I have been able to pay for using Amex - which was unexpected.

These examples are pretty specific. Have Amex decided that these particular transactions are abuse? Unless Amex has advised they are, this just adds to the confusion.

If on the other hand, no points were allocated for these particular transactions because Amex was recouping bonuses already allocated and transferred out of the account, then the purchases that triggered that action by them would be helpful.

I must admit this seems very odd as they would seem legit expenses...

However a few questions if I may to try and add clarity:

  • Were you perhaps enrolled in more than one bonus...and Amex have clawed back points?
  • Could Amex have swapped which bonus you are in if you are only in one. ie say from the 5/10 to the 10/ 20..and so again Amex could have reversed points.
  • Were the examples you gave the only ones that were reversed?
I would add that I have had various low spends (as well as some major ones)..and none have been reversed.

Another possibility is that it is just an aberation if only one business was involved and that some random aberation was involved with that particular business (ie somehow that their payments had to be done, or that that business is in dispute with Amex etc etc...).

Do you have other small payments that have been ok?

i haven't read through all the pages but i just wanted to voice my frustration regarding this promotion, i called up yesterday to try enroll but they told me my card number wasn't listed as eligible.

Bit annoyed as i suspect that's because i use my card on a regular basis and put through substantial yearly amounts so they're only sending it to those they want to start using it.

Would be interested to know if anyone who puts through large monthly amounts received a flyer.

jandk,

Yes they have, and may I politely suggest you peruse the thread before posting as this is why the thread is so long and convoluted. People are just re asking things that have been answered time and again. ;)

Hi, this is my first post. I registered yesterday with AMEX but it was my AMEX Qantas credit card that they allowed to be registered. Really odd cos the amended T & C says AMEX Qantas CC is excluded but my husband, who has both the gold AMEX and the Qantas CC rang up AMEX to enrol and was told his Gold Amex was not eligible but his Qantas CC is.

So now we got until the end of today to get our bonus points on our Qantas AMEX CC (was told it is 5000 points for every 10 transactions capped at 40K a month). We may find out in 8-10 weeks time this is all for nothing given that the amended T&C expressly excluded Qantas AMEX cards. Weird.

Use my card 300K+ annual, got the flyer, reckon just random.

My understanding (and I'll be corrected if I am wrong), is that it was a targetted promotion. Therefore, some CC holders were selected to participate and sent the offer, whilst others were not selected and sent nothing. Yes, it's disappinting for those not selected, but it is up to Amex to decide who are eligible for any promotion. They also targetted 3 different levels of tranacters (low, medium and high), so it was broadly spread across their cardholders (no single interest group was missed). Yes, I spend between $4K and $12K per month (based on 2008 YTD figures), but I know others here would spend much more than that and we were fortunate enough to be part of their target market in this promo. First time I've been part of one of their promo's to my recollection.

The fact that they may have allowed (or still be allowing) people to register who weren't sent any offer, as well as register cards that some have understood from the T&C's were ineligible (some conjecture there), only heightens the muddiness of the water. So we wait for further clarification from Amex....

Dilemma: Virgin or Qantas??

Well my 'rewards balance' disappeared but now it has been resurrected and increased by about 50 points, and they've processed my 2nd cheque in 2 weeks cheque to increase the 'available to spend' balance. I've also got bonus points credited overnight to my ff program. Now do I rush out for caffeine, milk, loo paper and dog, fish, guinea pig and mice food to get my last 5 txs for Sept? Frankly I don't know if I'm Arthur or Martha. I just hope I'm still 'in' the 5k/5t deal they signed me up for at a $80 fee when I rang about my card expiring - the replacement was lost in the mail - and some 5k/5t rewards deal. Ad the mystery deeps. It seems I was signed onto 'membership rewards' rather than 'my rewards' though the lass clearly spoke about 5,000 for 5 transactions and said yes a tx would be paying off a $100 phone bill in batches of $20 to get 5,000 pts. Overall, I think Amex knows they opened the floodgates but will do 'the right thing'. Bt can I risk stayig with amex-virgin???

I'd really like to know if I use my other cards to get points for qantas or push on with switching the family to virgin. We have 5 cash flights to LA next Feb-April, and I've got my ski resort accom already booked for Jan 2010 so I gotta know which airline/card we'll be using. Naturally if I can get one freebie on points, I'll be buying cash seats for the rest of the family.

(And any truth to the story Vaustralia might be flying to Vegas (near Powdr Corp's 5th ski resort and near/er to the Nth California and Colorado ski resorts?)

This promotion was advertised on the main Amex website landing page, which meant it was not targetted at particular users as it was visible to all

Not likely at all, however Virgin America already fly domestic routes in the U.S.

I would not worry until November.

I'm coming back to check my MR points balance then; last of 50K points dispatched to SPG today.

:D

I have just got off the phone with the CSO from AMEX. I can see why there are conflicting info coming from the CSO.

Finding #1
The CSO explained to me that they are getting lots of updates coming through their email updating the current situation. Eg: almost 1 update every 1/2 hr. That probably is why we are getting different info from the CSO.

Finding #2

All those who have registered prior to 19 Sept will be on the Old promotion eg: if u r signed up for MYREWARD, u will be entitled to continue earning the bonus pts without any caps as advertised until Dec. However, if you registered after 19 Sep, u will be subjected to a cap of 10K per month. bad luck to those who have applied after 19 Sept.

Finding #3

The reasons for a number of us who have failed to receive any bonus points posted during the last two days. Dont dispair. We are still signed up with the MYREWARDS promotion except that any transactions from now til Mon wont earned any MYREWARDS points due to technical problems. Well...Looks like I am not using my AMEX at places where a surchage will be applied. I will still continue using my amex at places where they will accept it despite not earning any MYREWARDS points til Mon.

My 2 Cents worth of GARLIC:lol::lol:

Further to my discussion with the CSO on 26 Sept, I was advised by the CSO that I spoke to on 26 sep to ring back on Mon (29 Sep). I rang back amex today to confirm my eligibility and was advised that the information provided to me on 26 sep iwas no longer valid. This is what has changed, there is now a new T&C for those who have registered prior to 20Sept which we will be receiving in the mail.

Those that signed up prior to 20 sept and did not received a postcard will be subject to a cap of 10K.

Not happy jan!!!!

So what's the latest words on those who got their postcard and register prior to 20th Sept.

Still remain un-capped? unlimited points?

Technically, Amex have up to 4th December to post points (up to 10 weeks) ...... So this thread will go a little bit quiet until then .......
