So I received my new Marco Polo Diamond pack yesterday - including the baggage tags. Do any of you guys ever get any durability out of the tags? I applied one first year to roller bag to test - wheeled it out one door and caught the door jam and it busted within one minute of affixing - am I just rough or are they nigh on useless? (Staff did get a right old laugh this morning when I showed them my new you beaut luggage tags - most of them saw the failure 3 years ago)

My MP Gold tags (which I assume are physically the same) didn't make it to the end of their first O/S trip - the braided wire used to attach them to the bag did, but the tag itself disappeared somewhere between Sydney and Macau.

On my first trip with them they got doubled over and folded into a nice sandwich. At least they were arriving 'home' at HKG ;)

I think my new ones (third pair now) may be in the letterbox tonight but I'll check in the morning. I need them for a HKG JASA next month.

Slightly OFF-T / slightly ON-T - applied for the Qantas Amex and was duly approved - card arrived and I called up to verify that I would receive the 50K bonus pts - NO Sir only for NEW Amex customers - told Cent RM OK cancel the card I don't want - then proceeded to tell him how irrelevant Amex is fast becoming on the Premium CC landscape - he apologised profusely - offered me 20K pts as way of goodwill gesture and proceeded to cancel the Qantas card - small win - not a life changer - but nice gesture anyway.

See, RMs are good - same as my experience, lots of free (and un-asked-for) points :)

Bottle of wine arrived in the mail today. The front of the box says "If you could taste appreciation it would be very much like this".

Now based on that I could only assume it was a bottle of Grange or HoG or Chateaux Margaux or something like that.

Upon opening I found a $38 bottle of 2008 Parker Coonawarra Cab Sauv. Now don't get me wrong, it's a nice wine and Halliday gave it 94 points. But I do appreciate the taste of Grange more :)

Plus, it was really just an add for a wine club - there was a brochure in with my bottle. That cheapens the gift in my view.

If you join Penfolds Kalimna Club you can get 6 Grange (current 100 points one) for just under $630 a bottle.

Once I get over $100 a bottle I just can't taste the difference in quality, that's just my dodgy palate though :)

$3780 for half a case it must be good; just wish I could appreciate it!!

It isn't a gift. It's marketing for the Wine Concierge.

Yes, that's exactly my point.

American Express tried to pass it off as a gift. The box has the words "If You Could Taste Appreciation It Would Be Very Much Like This" on the front. The folded note inside has the words "Thank You" on the front and the words "So please enjoy this bottle...with the compliments of American Express" inside. Later the note states "Another perfect pairing is the tasty new benefit..." and then goes on to plug the wine club.

I think it's a pretty obvious attempt to make it seem like a gift, while plugging the wine club at the same time, thus cheapening (considerably in my view) the sentiments of appreciation they have expressed.

Any gift in business is marketing - I will just appreciate mine, if I ended up getting one. I don't really trust them though as they just finally manage to deliver my magazine after my second anniversary to be a member. However Departures is now missing.

I agree. Why are we so cynical? Everyone knows that marketing is marketing. Regardless, you received a $40 bottle for nix. Be grateful. It's not like they're obliged to send it along with marketing - so it IS a gift - no need to look it in the mouth!

I also had probs with mags. I have a new RM and she makes sure I receive Cent mag, now. Departures has dropped off the list, but my wife gets hers, so it's all good. Since most promos are published in the mags, i don't think they get the importance of getting these out to all members.

I add up the value received from 2 x SBS plat and a Cent card and, for example, we are entitled to the current Hertz promo on each card, adding value to each one. I also enjoy reading the mags, even if there is a lot of duplication.

I finally picked up the win the the post office today, and I now understand what you meant after reading the "Thank You" letter. It is clearly marketing, but they are trying to pass it off as a gift. So, it is a bit disappointing, but I surely would still enjoy the drop. They could have just leave it as marketing and everyone would have been happy.
