Re: 2016 US Presidential Election

An interesting article on the popular vote-it is not what you think it is unlike in Australia-

Blog: Hillary wins the popular vote – not

First of all, she’s probably not going to win the actual number of votes cast. She may win the number of votes counted, but not the votes cast.
States don’t count their absentee ballots unless the number of outstanding absentee ballots is larger than the state margin of difference. If there is a margin of 1,000 votes counted and there are 1,300 absentee ballots outstanding, then the state tabulates those. If the number of outstanding absentee ballots wouldn’t influence the election results, then the absentee ballots aren’t counted.
Who votes by absentee ballot? Students overseas, the military, businesspeople on trips, etc. The historical breakout for absentee ballots is about 67-33% Republican.

Interesting spin on 'demographics of EC voters supporting Clinton' vs crime rates - if it can be believed.

and someone was paying $200 & a meal for up to 500 protesters against Trump. Craigslist now removing after getting publicity and complaints lodged - after the event that is...

Re: 2016 US Presidential Election

Google leads to you to fake news sites with false election results.

If you head to Google to learn the final results of the presidential election, the search engine helpfully walks through the final electoral vote tallies and number of seats won by each party in the House and Senate.
Under that, Google lists some related news articles. At the top this morning, with an accompanying photo: a story arguing that Donald Trump won both the popular and electoral votes.

Google's top news link for 'final election results' goes to a fake news site with false numbers

[h=1]How Teens In The Balkans Are Duping Trump Supporters With Fake News[/h] BuzzFeed News identified more than 100 pro-Trump websites being run from a single town in the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia.

Re: 2016 US Presidential Election

Tell me why are people surprised that either side resorts to "dodgy" tactics? And also why are people (even Trump supporters) still so hung up on blo#dy Hillary ... It's a hillarious () ... .the elections over, Trump won, time to move on... And yes the protesters against Trump should move on to ... ( although here's a question, is it undemocratic to protest against a democratic election result? I know here in the benign dictatorship in which I currently reside such protests would not be permitted ...).

Another thing that I find amusing is that Australia's pre-eminent conservative leader of the last 50 years (John Howard) indicated he would have unenthusiastically voted for Hillary if he had been a voter. Seemingly largely due to Trump's trade isolationist/anti globalisation policies. Although not sure if that also says something about the Left/Right spectrum in AU vs US, where Australia tends to be more "liberal" (US definition) in its outlook than the US, but still more conservative that much of Europe. It seems the distance isn't that great between the "establishment" Democrats in US, and the more progressive (and even some of the less progressive) elements of the AU Liberal Party (is it that Shorten ~ Bernie, Hillary ~ Turnbull, Paul Ryan ~ Abbott, Trump ~ Barnaby Joyce :p)...

Re: 2016 US Presidential Election

I tried to find a reference in The Australian about Trump appointing Stephen Bannon, but couldn't find it. So, I have to only post the SMH link. He seems like a lovely man:

Donald Trump's choice of anti-Semite Stephen Bannon for strategist brings wave of outrage

Edit, actually, I did find a reference to it here: Nocookies | The Australian [h=1]US election: mayor under pressure over ‘ape in heels’ post about Michelle Obama[/h]

Edit 2, perhaps I should add that my comment is facetious, just in case some on here misinterpret.

No one is surprised at all. Dirty tricks abound in all elections. Just the "enlightened" are shocked that the almost complete media bias did not work.

Re: 2016 US Presidential Election

Interesting analysis by UK TV reporter...

https://youtu.be/GLG9g7BcjKs

In the past few days, a video featuring English television reporter Jonathan Pie has gone viral. In it, he delivers an apparently off-the-cuff rant on the topic of who is really to blame for the election of Donald Trump.

Pie identifies the unwillingness of "people like me" (that is, him) to listen to opposing views, the belief that shutting down a debate is the same as winning it, the intolerance of the intolerant as factors in the shock result.
He suggests the pollsters got it so dreadfully wrong because people now felt afraid to voice their true opinions lest they be shouted down.

Or maybe not a TV reporter...

Spot on.

Have often wondered what the point of calling people "....ist" (racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic..."). Either they aren't and don't like the accusation or they are and either don't care or wear it as a badge of honor.

And don't get me started on "misogynist", when I first heard someone call Tony Abbott that, I had to look it up what it meant ( I wouldn't call my self uneducated either), sheesh, and they're using the word to try and win political advantage .... 90% of the population don't know what it means, and probably don't care either ...

Re: 2016 US Presidential Election

Or some of our feminists calling white women who voted for Trump racists.Racist because white women didn't vote for a white woman?Really.

Re: 2016 US Presidential Election

If you cannot persuade via nuanced debate, the modus operandi is to shut down the debate by labelling your opposition and turning to protests and riots. (Whichever argument is closer to the truth)
Its been used by both sides of the political spectrum but more recently and powerfully used by the left. The Achilles heel is as they have discovered is to leave them blind to the other side. The opposition is silenced but now invisible. The silenced and invisible sometimes then becomes the majority.

There is a preponderance of comments about what women did, did not do, should've done, should not have done, or a drawing about them / about what they did, or someone who wrote about them. It is getting a bit predictable. I hope we can move on soon.

Re: 2016 US Presidential Election

I agree, if that Clinton woman hadn't harped on and on about expecting women to vote for her because she was a woman we might have been spared all this talk about women

Re: 2016 US Presidential Election

Geez, it never ends. I hereby grant you the last word. Until another smart comment is made that is. ;)

Have a look at Stephen Bannon, he is a charming individual. That's what we should be concerned about, his influence.

Re: 2016 US Presidential Election

Just a bit of levity, get me outta here. Lot of people taking the result of an OS election far too seriously.

It can be difficult to judge when humour is being used with the written word. We don't have the usual facial expressions, body language or tone of voice to help.

The use of smilies and other emoticons go a long way to 'lightening' the tone of posts. :)*

*See what I did there! ;)

Re: 2016 US Presidential Election

Why Clinton being ahead doesn't necessarily mean she would have won if the President was elected by the popular vote-

What do I mean by that? Basically, losing the popular vote in an electoral-college election isn't the same as losing the popular vote in a popular-vote election. The former involves a very specific strategy that may cost you when it comes to winning the nationwide popular vote. But you pursue that strategy because the latter doesn't matter. You need to get to 270 electoral votes, not a majority or plurality of all votes.
An electoral-college election involves making explicit appeals to and advertising in around 10 or 12 out of the 50 states. It means Trump didn't campaign or advertise in California or Massachusetts or Washington state and that Clinton didn't campaign in Oklahoma or even Texas (despite polling within single digits there). They knew it would be wasted effort to try to turn a 30-point loss in those states into a 22-point loss, or a 14-point loss into an eight-point loss.
