Re: 2016 US Presidential Election

At 70 I consider him to be way too old to handle the job. Two terms would seem to be most unlikely.

I resemble that remark.Just hitting my prime at 70!
Ronald Reagan turned 70 17 days after his inauguration.

Re: 2016 US Presidential Election

Well it's now time for Trump to deliver and make USA great again, in fact I believe he said greatest ever yesterday.

Not sure how he is going to do it but I truly believe it's better to have a strong USA in a his world so hopefully somehow he can meet or exceed expectations. 45th President Trump -

Re: 2016 US Presidential Election

I Think that kinda proves the point. ;)

Au contraire.many rate Reagan as one of the better presidents because he selected a very good team and didn't interfere. As he said-
“The greatest leader is not necessarily the one who does the greatest things. He is the one that gets the people to do the greatest things.”

“There is no limit to the amount of good you can do if you don't care who gets the credit.”

“Government's first duty is to protect the people, not run their lives”
“Thomas Jefferson once said, 'We should never judge a president by his age, only by his works.' And ever since he told me that, I stopped worrying.”

“Surround yourself with great people; delegate authority; get out of the way”

“If more government is the answer, then it was a really stupid question.”

“I want you to know that also I will not make age an issue of this campaign. I am not going to exploit, for political purposes, my opponent's youth and inexperience.”

Re: 2016 US Presidential Election

These things are always subjective on who was the best etc. The sayings are interesting, as long as they are carried out.

I distinctly remember when the poor old chap had dementia whilst in office, the time he was walking from his helicopter on the White House lawns smiling and waving to the cameras. Someone yelled, "what are you going to do about x ..." He was stumped for an answer, until Mrs Reagan quietly in the background, "we're doing all we can" and then he repeated it.

Re: 2016 US Presidential Election

Maybe it was caused by that bullet he took in the chest?

Re: 2016 US Presidential Election

But many Americans disagree with you-
Twenty-five percent of Americans rank Reagan as the best president in a survey conducted by The Harris Poll. Franklin Roosevelt was ranked second-best with 19 percent of the vote.
-----
One-third of respondents say Abraham Lincoln is the best president in U.S. history. Lincoln was followed by Reagan and George Washington.

Re: 2016 US Presidential Election

And that link you give has this as the last paragraph-
Altman returned to the subject in 1997, after Reagan had completed his second term. Having talked to many of the president's doctors in the White House, he concluded that there was no evidence that Reagan had suffered any of the symptoms of dementia while in office.

So you are saying that the son who was known to be offside with his father is a better judge of dementia than the White house doctors?

Re: 2016 US Presidential Election

It was just a sample of the many online articles that said that he did or did not.

Re: 2016 US Presidential Election

There's a certain degree of respect afforded to leaders during the 80's and the contribution they made, regardless of side of politics. History seems to have looked fairly favourably on them and what they did, whether it be Reagan, Thatcher, Hawke in the west, and of course Gorbachev in the east. Although it does seem the imperative now seems to be to undoing a some (or in the case of Russia, a lot) of what they did.

As for Reagan may have been as old as Trump, but he did have considerable experience at governing (8 years as Governor of California) and to quote drron quoting Reagan above:
“Surround yourself with great people; delegate authority; get out of the way”

It will be interesting to see if Trump is capable of "getting out of the way" and letting the people he is surrounding himself with (some great, some not so great I assume) do their jobs. Also, whilst he may not have experience at governing like Reagan, one could argue that Trump's expertise is not even running business's - what he knows best and does successfully is to build the brand Trump, and that seems to be what he wants to do as President - as in build brand America, hopefully not just brand Trump .....

Regardless, tnteresting times ahead. Not sure if he is as bad as those on the left make out, but it will be a challenge for him to deliver on everything his supporters hope for, and keep the country on an even keel. Especially in a space where policies and legislation have to be more than 140 characters long ;)

But,but,but....His doctors said he did not show symptoms of dementia in office no matter what the online articles say.

Re: 2016 US Presidential Election

Even harder though on the internet.
But research into dementia came to life in the 70s.The MMSE test which is still used for screening was introduced in 1975.Then as now clinical suspicion and good history taking are the essentials for first investigating for dementia.

He probably will have a heart attack or get impeached before the term is over.

Re: 2016 US Presidential Election

All the belly-aching won't change the fact that Trump is now the POTUS. Given that he succeeded against much negativity even from within his own party and what everyone considered were insurmountable odds, those who now want to "double down" on him being a failure clearly shouldn't gamble because they have already proven themselves lousy judges without any political smarts.

I think part of Trump's strategy is to keep the world guessing - it's tactically smart to make other leaders feel a bit insecure / uncomfortable as to where they stand - and they surely must know by now that he won't shirk from stating the plain truth just to be diplomatic. Not being hostage to a politician's mindset of "political correctness" will probably serve Trump well. Everyone knows that now it's "America First" and the others can squabble over the scraps.

I for one intend to enjoy the ride, confident in the knowledge that celebrities and naysayers will continue to make fools of themselves simply because they don't even have the grey matter to realise all their predictions do date have amounted to zilch.

More random speculation without any substance whatsoever. Persisting in just blatantly making things up equates to zero credibility.
