Re: 2016 US Presidential Election

Geez, I'm not looking forward to landing at LAX in May. What happens when you miss your connection?

Re: 2016 US Presidential Election

Well, I guess that let's me off seeing as I am a gym junky self image absorbed tosser. With that definition, anyone who looks after themselves is out. Maybe that's why DT looks so orange, fat and unhealthy.

I have never played golf, but I suspect it is a very healthy way to ponder things. Would far prefer a leader who played golf to a gym-junky-self-image-absorbed tosser :)

Re: 2016 US Presidential Election

Last time we went to LAX Mrscove was detained and was taken off for an interview while I waited and waited around carousel 8. My partner hasn't written anything like Mem Fox but she did have a new 10 year Australian passport. I will watch what happens in our March arrival.

Re: 2016 US Presidential Election

We've decided our next trips to the US will be via a port that does pre clearance. Abu Dhabi, Dublin ( yes - that would be the long way around if going to LAX!), or Vancouver ( probably the best option I would think).

Thoughts?

Re: 2016 US Presidential Election

Either people have short memories or they never fly to the USA..........otherwise they would know that the TSA is the US has been virtually unaccountable to anyone and has detained / searched / questioned anyone it chooses for many years - certainly for so long that anyone who thinks that its modus operandi in this regard is materially different since Trump ascended to the throne, is delusional or ignorant.

It seems though that they have now been given approval by the President direct to do whatever they want to whomever they want under the catchcry of security.

So what.I was taken aside and strip searched at LHR.And I was only in transit.
How many had had a visit to Iran. That would have you turned back for a year before Trump was President if you hadn't got a visa.

What's the relevence of you being strip searched in the UK? Can't see any really.........

By the way, he is a US citizen, actually born there. I'll try and find out if he has visited any of the countries mentioned previously in this thread.

And thus it has always been since 9/11. For the past 8 years it just happened that "the President" they did "whatever they want to whomever they want" under was Obama, a fact that it seems convenient to forget. Both black and white TSA agents (and yes, both male and female) at US airports have always been well known to be just as officious in equal measure. It has long happened to travellers of every colour and nationality (including white middle aged male US citizens) at every airport and every day in the USA but now people are commenting on people like Ali's son and Mem Fox as if they are being singled out subsequent to Trump's presidency. I can recall reading of celebrities whinging about their treatment by immigration people at US airports years ago. To imply that the situation now is different under Trump is complete and utter fabricated bunkum.

If there's one thing smart people have always known about travel into the USA it is that that the only thing you say to TSA agents is "Yes sir" or "Yes mam".

Really! You are complaining about people being detained at a border and blaming Trump.I am pointing out it happens at other borders. And if I thought the same as you I would have blamed Gordon Brown but I don't.

Yes, they are pretty gnarly and always have been. Time will tell. We travelled through the US just fine a few years ago, no issues at all. Just hope they work out the correct targets when needed but hassling a 70 year old doesnt fill me with confidence. The bad guys are cleverer and sheer brute force seems to be the only weapon the TSA has.

Oh, I thought this was not a Muslim ban - now I am even more confused. They seem to be confused as well getting their story straight. I don't think they used to take a large group of people and leave them standing against a wall whether 70 or holding a baby and humiliate them en masse, all in front of each other - refer back to Mem Fox's experience.

I haven't blamed trump for anything, I have however, shown that even if you are the son of an American icon, you are still liable to be treated with utter contempt for purely having a muslim sounding name....... and perhaps being just a little bit black......

Mem Fox, I can understand, after all she is an alien. Just as an aside, why did the us embassy bother responding to her criticism, let alone giving a written apology? I bet they wouldn't bother even acknowledge let alone reply to most people.

To quote someone else here "I'm bored now".

Sorry but look at your post that I responded to and what you responded to>Seems to blame the President and basically what this thread is about.
The truth is that US border agents have acted this way for many years. Why on AFF is the USA referred to as LOTFAP.Thanks mainly to LAX border and TSA agents.
These things have happened for many years. The Mem Fox incident was because the Immigration Officer thought she had the wrong visa. This has happened before and will almost certainly happen well into the future.Doesn't excuse the response but I doubt that will change.
