2019 Federal Election Discussion

Watching the poacher become the gamekeeper from the inside was an interesting experience. When the Large Business World was set up in 1988, we did extensive field work and some brilliant results. But the wheels fell off until Commissioner Jordan turned up. Many of us were very annoyed we had a lot of staff who seemed to think deleting emails was a good result. When the infamous $1.5 billion Myer float money floated to the Cayman Islands this on top of the a few other famous losses occurred, it seemed the toppling point for the former Commish.

You’re right about change of structure where the Commish forced staff to get out there into the field. Of course the double Irish Dutch sandwich led to MAAL (& TATF) armoured with IMPROVED legislation. Corporate tax transparency , getting bums off seats out doing fieldwork. a few court wins, settlements plus the exhaustion of many 2008 losses) these have supported a significant contribution to revenue uplift
I don't deny that tax legislation recently has become tighter with the main driver being the OECD implementation of its BEPS measures, but without that change in structure of the ATO do you think the gain in corporate tax revenue would have been anywhere near what we've seen in the past few years? (would love to hear further insight from someone previously on the inside)

Here's hoping ScoMo is willing and has the internal support to commit to a more proactive energy and climate change agenda

With many of the old guard now gone and maybe also the added advantage of not announcing any significant policies before the election, he may well be the first LNP leader since Howard anyway to be in a position to really set an agenda that is less ideological and more representative of the wishes of the Australian people

The election result really does I think give the parliament a chance to recalibrate and start working in a much less divisive fashion. For the last decade or more it has been a race to the bottom from all sides as far as I can see

Sorry, but this is the type of pretty outrageous talk we heard on the ABC on election night. "Now the government's been re-elected, its a good opportunity to implement policies different from what they went to the election with."

'The wishes of the Australian people' ... now, its always a bit tricky to decipher what 'the Australian people' wanted in respect of each individual policy, but equally, you can't pick and choose the policies where they rat on what they promised. Other sectors of the population, believing in their causes and righteousness might say "now's the time for the government to relax gun legislation'.

Labor put their policies up, as did the Liberals. Liberals won - they should implement the policies they promised, not those of the losing party.

Beware those who push policies that benefit them financially...but luckily sometimes, just sometimes the punt does not work out.

I would have thought it would be incumbent on ScoMo to at least implement what he said he would. Or have I missed something.

Sorry too, RooFlyer. The tactic from the Coalition was to make the whole election campaign a presidential-style contest, and spin as many lies as possible about the opposition policies.

So the shallow boofhead with not much blood on his hands (thanks to that idiot who can only count to 20 with his shoes and socks off), was seen as a better bet than the charisma-challenged ex-unionist who was like Lady Macbeth (never able to get all the blood off his knife).

And every change to collections was a Great Big New Tax, regardless of facts. So reversing the Howard folly of letting people pay negative tax was a cash grab by Shorten that would see poor retirees no longer able to afford food, yada-yada .... The truth was that Howard enacted the GBNT by taking money from me (and other honest taxpayers) and giving it to people who have income but pay NO TAX AT ALL. Furthermore, these beneficiaries of tax laws unique to Australia are currently having their cake and eating it too. What they should be doing is selling part of their portfolio to generate the same income that this overly generous handout produces. But when common sense meets self-interest, the latter tends to prevail.

Don't agree Roo, the coalition ran on one policy, the state of the economy. That gives them freedom to create new policy agenda's on just about everything else

Presidential style?. Didn’t know that was wrong. Was Ok for Kevin07
Spin lies?. And the losing side didn’t lie?
Many people in this country (more than 1:3) with income actually pay no net tax - even negative tax. I see nothing wrong with that. Let’s make it fair - take tax credits from one group?. Then you should take tax credits away from all. Ban the tax refund.
When you call someone a boofhead, and someone else stupid (can’t count) you negate much of your narrative.

Our friends live in Falcon south of Mandurah which has become retirement central as all the post war baby boomers retire.
When Chris Bowen said “if you don’t like it don’t vote for us”........well they all voted Liberal.....
It was the same everywhere it seems.
Thank you Chris Bowen !! You helped dispatch a lot of BS that was floating around Labor policies.

Surely we can help have a discussion here without the abuse?

Sorry again, simply not true. Lots of policies on various issues. And Labor ran hard on what they would do differently.

Was it Labor or the Greens who said that the election would be a referendum on climate change? The result is in.

Gillard won an election in 2010 on a “no carbon tax under the government I lead
Abbott won landslide on “scrap the tax”
Turnbull nearly lost as he took the coalition to the left on climate change
ScoMo won on a more moderate stance on climate.

Someone tell me what the take home message is

I happily visited two different polling booths on Saturday - just for the cake stalls!! #DemocracyCakes

Oddly, I found the people handing out how to vote cards at the church polling booth much less aggressive than the ones at the school hall. Really felt like I was running a gauntlet at the school, and ended up telling them all I was just there for the cakes. Which I was.

Both stalls sold out of snags and cakes shortly after lunchtime, so that was a win for the stall volunteers! The church sausage stall had some vegetarian sausages which they were giving away at the end. :D Shortly after packing up, a woman was looking for a sausage; she said she was vegetarian, but indulges in a democracy sausage at elections. She was even more upset that we'd run out when we told her there'd been vegetarian sausages as well. Oops.

Self interest and ignorance tend to dominate in a right-leaning electorate?

I volunteered at my kids school to help with the democracy sausage and cake stall and the cakes were all gone before lunch and the snags and bacon & egg rolls were done by 4pm. We packed up and left by 5pm. I'm told that people were disappointed right up until the polls closing. These elections are great for fundraising, bring on the next one! We'll be btter prepared though :)

Don't forget "Mediscare".

"Mediscare", for all it's overreach and embellishments, was a pale shadow of the dishonest attack ads against policies to close tax arrangements that favour the already wealthy.

Until the AEC can prosecute parties for airing misleading ads, the campaigns will get nastier and nastier.

Guy at my booth was handing out Liberal h-t-v cards. When I walked past, he called out after me "You right?".

I stopped, took a few paces back, and suggested that he might like to acquire some manners.

Anyway, I've never taken a H-t-v card in my life. I'm one of those who throw the preference predictions out. :)

The people at the ABC, ALP and Greens still don't understand why they lost - people don't want to commit economic suicide to satiate false green idols. Penny Wong's performance on election night on the ABC election panel was hilariously sour. We dodged a bullet not having that arrogant graceless hack representing us internationally as Foreign Minister.
