The way to win a Championship is not by yourself. You're going to need Oscar and you're going to need the team.

The Drivers’ Championship is a very long shot for Norris, but the Constructors’ Championship is massively in play for McLaren. Handing back the position was a bitter pill to swallow, but with a cooler head, he’ll recognise that it was the right call and that the trust engendered by that action will serve him well into the future when it’s really needed.
Now all we need is for someone to stop running scared of VET VER and tell him reality of petulance and restraint. Ahahahah.

Assuming you mean VER? ;)

Granted, this was an issue for VET for a while there (multi-21 anyone?), but he turned into a gentleman of the sport by the end of it.

Well deserved win for Piastri, and eventually Norris did the right thing, I thought it was ironic that that whole McClaren thing was a strategic call to cover off Lewis Hamilton, which as it turned out, Hamilton may not have been such a threat as McClaren thought (given Hamiltons strategy was compromised a bit).

Could have been a snoozer/disaster of a race with drivers told to preserve tyres on Lap 2, no-one wants to see a tyre preservation endurance race but it became one of the more exciting races of the season. Norris sort of did this to himself on Lap 1 though by trying to run Piastri off the road, instead of worrying about the hot-headed young Dutchman in the Red Bull behind. Fortunately for McClaren, it looks like Verstappen himself had a brain explosion from the green lights, and ended up being a danger to himself and other drivers. As I said last race, Verstappen will be shown up now that he's not sailing into the sunset in a Red Bull that was many seconds faster than every other car, he's now racing other cars and drivers in competitive race cars and he will be learning that the free ride the stewards gave him at the beginning of his career might end now, both he and Sergio Perez seem due for some sort of mental reset if they want to win the constructors championship although Max might have built up too much of a lead in the drivers points to date to be in danger of not winning the drivers championship.

What did we learn? From the podium body language - I think that Norris might have grown up and recognized the importance of the win for the team. We now know that Piastri is one cool cucumber and is mentally tough enough to be a future world champion if he can wangle his way into the right car at the right time. By staying calm and performing well he will convert the doubters inside the McClaren garage if he continues to improve like he has. I imagine the McClaren team orders memes would be in full overdrive this morning.

Verstappen looks like he needs a holiday already, and I wouldn't be surprised to see increased stress in the Red Bull team, maybe from the Horner and Marko/Verstappen Senior issues might be starting to compromise the team. Hamilton drove a great race despite not the ideal strategy and drove himself into a P3 that was well deserved and his gracious congratulation of the McClaren team was nice. LeClerc and Sainz seemed to do nothing obviously wrong and the issue of why they let Sainz go continues to puzzle me. Danny Ric's and Perez and Russels races ruined by poor team strategies and Tsunoda got as much out of the car as expected so he continues to mature as a driver this season as well.

Pretty interesting race to watch from the viewpoint of team strategies, pit stop windows and tyre selection without rain or a safety car bunching up the pack, it was a track I would have expected Red Bull to own, and McClaren to be not so good, but it ended up the opposite. Spa should be the reverse of Hungary, but maybe Spa will be a reverse of the reverse?
 
Very enjoyable race and so glad to see Oscar take the win! Kudos to Lando for being a good team player.... eventually... 😜

Checo in P7.... hmm..... a reasonable drive, but aided only by the pit wall getting him out in clear air. I can't help but think he should have been doing more with the machinery in terms of carving his way through the midfield cars earlier in the race. That being said, George wasn't having much more luck in his Mercedes. Is it enough to save him from being booted from RBR? Right here and now, I'd suggest the answer is no, especially with McLaren scoring a 1-2 finish and Max having a bad day at the office. With the gap in the Constructors' Championship now down to 51 points, McLaren on an absolute tear with 2 drivers in top form, I'd be thinking that RBR are very worried about their trajectory post the Emilia Romagna GP given that McLaren have scored 184 points compared to RBR's 121. Spa will be make or break for Perez.

This was not handed to Oscar. He earned it through a brilliant start and excellent race management. To suggest otherwise diminishes his performance. The only reason it became an issue was McLaren knowingly stopping Norris early (such that he would undercut Piastri) explicitly for the purposes of covering Hamilton whilst also explicitly advising both drivers that it was strategic and that there would be a position switch. The rules of engagement were clear to both drivers and like it or not, it's a team sport. Anthony Davidson just made the point on Sky's coverage that for the purposes of British taxation law, drivers are employees of the Team and therefore, employees are expected to do as the team demands of them. Additionally, if McLaren was not seeking to cover off Hamilton, they would have pitted Oscar first, meaning that Oscar would have had track position and could have better controlled things. Would he have held on for the win in that situation? Who knows? But we're talking hypotheticals now which is precisely what Lando was discussing over the radio.

As for Ricciardo... He actually drove a very strong race. He - and Yuki - were overtaken at the start by cars running the soft compound (vs their mediums) and RB royally screwed him on race strategy, particularly for his first stop. They succeeded in placing him in a DRS train, whilst leaving Yuki out in clean air to go long. They went for the undercut on the second stop to put him in clear air and he was (comparatively) rapid. Through the course of his second and third stint, he was consistently faster than Yuki and was only overtaken by the Aston Martins, which were undeniably quicker cars. Why didn't the Astons get Yuki? Simply because they screwed their own strategy and put themselves on the back foot, whereas RB got it right with Yuki.


He certainly had his grumpy pants on today didn't he? GP Lambiase has the patience of a saint dealing with Max when he's in these sorts of stroppy moods, but I do love his sarcastic replies to Max's petulance. Max absolutely deserves a penalty for that move given he was completely out of control.

Those reasons are valid, but I still bet PIA wishes there was no doubt and he properly beat NOR by 10 seconds...as NOR said I'll let him past WHEN he catches me....we all know the dirty air prevents him safely catching up. History records the winner, not the reasons...I can see why NOR and many fans are cranky. A few years ago teams "invented" issues to slowly swap drivers around so the public didnt suspect anything, now its pull over and let him by??

VER now has to learn to lose, or settle for a position, just like HAM had to do a few years ago when his car superiority era ended.
 
Reality for Norris is had he actually given back the place immediately and managed his tyres, with Oscar's issues later in the race, Norris may have been able to pass.

Fair enough. I interpreted your post as saying that he had a poor race and underperformed, but I take your point.
 
A great race, congrats to Piastri he deserved the win after his brilliant start.
Verstappen taking over Kvyat's crown as the Torpedo...
Red Bull need to get rid of Perez and give someone else a shot.
Bring on Spa this weekend!
 
I think McLaren believe their big chance this year is to take the constructor championship off Red Bull more so than the Championship title off Max and getting that first F1 career win under the belt for both of their young drivers will help them put team above ego - at least for the rest of this season. They should be able to prioritise Lando from here on in (if they want) and Oscar will find that easier to accept after this.

...and doesn't Max get stroppy when the shoe is on the other foot when he is behind and has to try and pass a car that isn't 0.5s slower than him. There seemed to be some genuine panic from him this weekend that his recent dominance might be slipping away.

Another lap and a decent stop for Piastri and it might have been different.

Perez has to be gone.
Dan beat Yuki but missed out on points.

If I was RBR, it's Perez sacked, Dan to RBR, Lawson to RB, and you are seriously considering Sainz for next year.

I think Dan had a fairly strong race. Just missed out on the points, but when you look at it, he finished ahead of Albon and Gasly, both of whom started ahead of him. By comparison, Yuki didn’t really manage to do much with his completely new power unit.

Perez…. 2nd to 8th and well beaten by his team mate who started 9 places behind with his engine penalty. Ouch. Not a great day at the office.

Top drives by both Hamilton and Russell, but have to say Russell sure as hell earned it the hard way. Piastri looked good too (as is becoming the norm).
 
The races are getting interesting again.
Oscar looking more and more comfortable amongst the top.
Surprised to wake to RUS DQ....a deserved point for RIC, QF could easily have turned out differently for him, again.
 
wonder who the Merc engineer is who had that 'one job'...
Excess tyre wear, and the reduced weight as a result due to the long stint is being blamed...Sounds like something they could've considered given how many other variable they factor in these days.
