27th February Big Qantas announcement

There was no second half guidance from either Virgin nor Qantas so who knows when their revenues will exceed their costs.
Virgin's loss on international was quite interesting. So much from doing so little.
Getting rid of the carbon tax would help both of them.

I was taught that one should not end a sentence with an adverb. So 'personally' in the email is in the wrong place.
Similar with finishing one with a preposition

Many younger Australians do not know where to place an apostrophe - how many of us have seen pizza's on an A frame board at the local pizzeria?

"200,000 members using the facility already prepaid" - clumsy.

The email is verbose. The strange use of capital letters gives it a childish look.
If we don't take umbrage and point out the mistakes, then we are our own worst enemies. I'm sure that Lesley couldn't have proofed that version.

and how many people on this board use your when they mean you're - wince every time I see it (not that my grammar is perfect. :) ).

There are some that should know better, as well as those that don't know better. The problem is that laziness and auto correct don't help us know which ones to assist.

Sensational, titillating headline.......and LAX fault! Pity this poor excuse of a paper can't report the plain facts.

How is this any different to the stuff reported in rupes papers or any other news sites for that matter?

Plenty of poor sods will now get a terrible F and J seat because some tool in LAX can't do their job correctly....no doubt everyone will blame QF. Just like the pitiful Fairfax organisation. God only knows what BS the ABC has been peddling!

Again, no different to what other news organisations are reporting. Just where does the SMH report say the blame is with QANTAS? Have you checked the ABC web site? They don't blame QANTAS either. ho hum.

Sorry, but what evidence do you have that the spelling and grammatical errors in the copy are attributable to a member of "Gen Y"?
That was my fault, I should have used the words "probably".

I'm 24 years old (firmly within Generation Y) and work with three older colleagues (32, 40 and 55 years old respectively), all of whom are considerably worse spellers and grammaticians than myself. I've given up counting the number of times I've had to correct emails they've written before they are sent to customers/suppliers. They misuse idioms, struggle to punctuate correctly and often misspell the simplest of words.
Then you are not the norm from my experience and my heart is lifted knowing you are championing the English cause. You are not typical of the Gen Y's I have employed or have as clients. Some of those went to very good schools and yet I despair at their lack of knowledge in the English spoken and written word.

I'm a bit sick of the perpetuation of the stereotype that members of Generation Y are dumb, good-for-nothing bludgers. It would be worth your while to recognise that many of us have a lot to contribute and that you might actually learn something from us.
The perception of Gen Y is mine from my experience - unfortunately. I know there are an upstanding group within, it would appear that you are one!

Your last comment is one of my favourite sayings - handed down from my father :D

Don't let a generality upset you. I have 3 gen Y children, all of whom are intelligent, hard working and socially conscious. We did have to work quite hard at spelling and grammar as it wasn't taught at primary school. I have unfortunately had a few young people who worked for me who did exhibit quite definite Generation Y tendencies and it gets easy to just make derogatory comments, As within every generation there are probably more who do not exhibit the stereotypical behaviour. We baby boomers have had to put up with a great deal of those remarks as well. :)

The article in the Herald today by Adele Ferguson and Matt OSullivan was spot on - worth a read if you haven't already

As this is a Frequent Flyer Site, it doesn't mean that all who are regular and occasional visitors here are necessarily QF FF in the main, although I am one.
Most of the debate over the past 138 pages has been mostly from QFFF's I think, but I am hoping that the debate can bring the non QF FF into this with their experiences with their airline of choice and how they see the way Qantas is likely to look in a year or two.
I am left wondering when the changes start to kick in, how I and my family will be effected when it comes time to travel and use what points we have left to find a seat (if any).
I see the scarcity of seats, particularly on International routes that most of us experience now, will be such that our points will be worthless and leave us no alternative but to burn them up ASAP (if possible) and join another loyalty programme with another airline.
If this happens, then Qantas is doomed considering how many QF FF are on its books.(several million I believe).
Is there an "officially audited number" by the way ?
I have paid tens of thousands of dollars in fares over a couple of decades flying Qantas, but is it possible that Qantas could go the way of Ansett, TWA, Pan Am ?
Has a $ value been placed on the worth of the QF FF programme to Qantas ?

From the half year report http://www.qantas.com.au/infodetail/about/investors/2013InvestorPresentation.pdf

Qantas Loyalty
14 1H13 VLY %
• Record Underlying EBIT1 $146m, up 7% – Up 10% excluding new business start up costs2
• Billings3 up 9%, double digit credit card point sales • 8 new QFF partners driving more ways to earn • Sustained record customer advocacy levels
– 9.8m4 members and growing; FY14 target 10m
– 3 million awards redeemed, up 11% • Growth initiatives exceeding expectations
– Qantas Cash – over 200,000 activations4
– AQUIRE – ~25,000 SMEs pre‐registered; more than 10 key partners in core categories; 31 March launch date

QFF value ? Seen reports of a value between $2B-$3B

Simple. The link posted here (by someone else) was SMH  and unfortunately, the ABC is the worst of a bad bunch :( The ABC is in more need of a new MD than QF ;)

Priceless! You should be on Shaun Micallef's Mad as Hell ...

Shaun who?

He's this funny, intelligent guy. Sort of like the inverse of Andrew Bolt, if that makes things clearer. Anyway .... Shaun is looking for another character like Admiral Bobo Gargle. Apply to YourABC in your capital city.

As usual Modds - don't have a clue what you are banging on about ...

The article by Cameron Stewart in the Weekend Inquirer also gives an interesting background of the efforts of Alan Joyce over the period from 2009 onwards. It was interesting to read that a proposed solution with the Gillard government was ended by Rudds removal of Gillard. I think the jury is still out on whether QF has been effective in lobbying politicians of both colours, in hindsight it may be that they were so distracted by the day to day politicking and rent seeking that they forgot to manage a bunch of airlines.
