Yes Virgin announced terrible results but the main story was still QF - the difference is one carrier has an endless supply of money from its owners to draw on, the other doesnt.

No it doesn't. NZ is still majority owned by the govt and doesn't have a bottomless pit to draw on.

What seems to have been lost in the debate is the demise of QFi has occurred during a period of unprecedented growth in outbound tourism from Australia. Based on Tourism Research Australia figures, annual trip figures ending June 30 being as follows:

2000 - 2.99m;
2008 - 5.14m;
2009 - 5.24m;
2013 - 7.46m representing 149% growth since 2000 and 45% over the past 5 years.

Australian Airline industry Domestic load factors have also barely moved throughout the airline wars since 2000 and continue to remain at comparatively high levels of upper 70's. The 76.5% LF at December 2013 is the lowest level reached in this period, noting it was at 77.9% prior to Jetstar commencing flights in 2004. Historically, LF's prior to 2000 were in the 60's and low 70's.

Overall domestic travel figures for 2013 are as follows:
ASK's +3.4%;
RPK's +2.0%;
Available seats +3.5%;
Aircraft trips +1.7%;
Load Factor -1.0%.

Hardly doom and gloom figures.

Why do we have Gen Y writing copy and nobody with English skills checking??

I was taught that one should not end a sentence with an adverb. So 'personally' in the email is in the wrong place.

Many younger Australians do not know where to place an apostrophe - how many of us have seen pizza's on an A frame board at the local pizzeria?

"200,000 members using the facility already prepaid" - clumsy.

The email is verbose. The strange use of capital letters gives it a childish look.

Being from Perth and flying to SIN with QF is what I currently do with the whole family a few times a year. I have been loyal to QF but cutting this flight will force me to think what I need to do next. Do I move on and away from QFF? I might just have too......

Perth has certainly suffered over the years. Too many flights but obviously not enough passengers. Maybe a PER-HKG-NRT could have worked. Also PER-CGK-SIN. Four flghts into 2. Then again may not be enough people wanting to travel in this config.
Or possibly traffic rights to be able to sell HKG-NRT & CGK-SIN. A surprising number of people here on AFF seem oblivious to the necessary airline traffic right between countries.

and how many people on this board use your when they mean you're - wince every time I see it (not that my grammar is perfect. :) ).

SMH have a piece basically giving a historical recap of what's happened until this week, the graphic on route changes serves as a good reminder of the thing that has affected most customers:

Welcome to the real world.

With Qantas retiming QF9/10 this frees up an A380. Once HKG goes back to 5 weekly A380 (2 weekly B744), there will be two 388 aircraft available. Surely these will go to DFW.

A380 fleet - 12 frames
QF1/2 - 3 frames
QF9/10 - 2 frames
QF93/94 - 2 frames
QF11/12 - 2 frames
QF7/8 - 2 frames
QF127/128 - 1 frame
Line maintenance can be done on days QF127/128 is operated by 744 and during ground time at LAX and LHR.

B744 fleet - currently 15 frames (9 refurbed, 6 non-refurb)
QF107/108 - 2 frames (refurbed)
QF27/28 - 1 frame (refurbed)
QF15/16 - 2 frames (refurbed)
QF63/64 - 1.5 frames (refurbed)
QF21/22 - 1.5 frames (refurbed)
QF127/128 - 0.5 frames (4 class non-refurb)
1 spare refurbed and 1 spare 4 class non-refurb

3 class non refurb OJA, OJC, OJI and 4 class non-refurb OJL all could be retired. (OJC is being retired this month anyway)

And again AJ became CEO in late November 2008.The bulk of that share slide came under Geoff Dixon.

Not to mention the massive run-up the share price had due to the failed APA takeover play...

Airline Partners Australia - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Margaret Jackson (Chairman) said the proposal provided an attractive premium for Qantas shareholders, being 33 percent higher than the closing share price of $4.20 on 6 November 2006, the day before the first speculation about the offer; and 61 percent above Qantas' volume weighted average share price of $3.48 over the six months to that date.

Sorry, but what evidence do you have that the spelling and grammatical errors in the copy are attributable to a member of "Gen Y"?

I'm 24 years old (firmly within Generation Y) and work with three older colleagues (32, 40 and 55 years old respectively), all of whom are considerably worse spellers and grammaticians than myself. I've given up counting the number of times I've had to correct emails they've written before they are sent to customers/suppliers. They misuse idioms, struggle to punctuate correctly and often misspell the simplest of words.

I'm a bit sick of the perpetuation of the stereotype that members of Generation Y are dumb, good-for-nothing bludgers. It would be worth your while to recognise that many of us have a lot to contribute and that you might actually learn something from us.
