Federal Government announce they will not offer debt guarantee for Qantas | News.com.au

government announced no debt guarentee and they will amend sale act.

Now selling, one airline!! Was flying kangaroo now flying camel or panda??

shame to loose one of the last new iconic Aussie companies

Shame they're just towing the party line, rather than what is really in the national interest.. Oh well, time will tell if it was right decision to withhold debt guarantee or not.
In my opinion they should have given it, but thats just my opinion.

Just booked my last QFi PER-SIN rt flight this afternoon. I have flown this route more than 30 times over the past few years. Will have to do a lap and say goodbye to Changi T1 on the way back as T3 will be my new SIN home from now on.

You can also now add MEL-NRT as a route that went from QF to JQ. Great post anyway.

Yeh, I didn't include it as it wasn't there in my snapshot from 2000. And it's not a route that was handed directly from QF to Jetstar, it was a shortlived QF route, was axed and then some time (a couple of years?) elapsed before Jetstar took it on (by contrast to say the MEL-CHC where JQ routes directly replaced existing QF services, or even the DPS routes which were handed off - via the intermediary 2000's incarnation of Australian Airlines, before going to Jetstar)

For many years QF21 had a MEL-SYD segment departing around 7pm - it was operated by domestic crew, but used international terminals. So MEL-NRT was indeed bookable as a single 'direct' flight.

I used to often take it as (especially in the early 2000's) the catering was better than the Domestic QP's (Not that much, this was before the Newson/Perry Flounges opened in 2007).

(Believe or not, back in the late 90's Qantas actually operated landside International lounges in conjunction with those airside.)

Doesn't make sense to me.If they grant it JB says he would immediately want the same deal which would mean the Aussie taxpayer quaranteeing SQ,NZ and EY don't lose money.

But at the end of the day JB can ask for whatever he wants the Gov can say no after all they are the Gov!

Just as they can say no to QF.Why should QF get a debt quarantee and not VA.Rex probably needs one more than both.

I agree, and with QF51 going back to an A330, I might have to contemplate a 3AM 777 flight for Singapore trips, in the meantime its a no brainer to AKL!

I was on an A330 the other day SIN-SYD. It is Ok but not fun.

Started off as 747 in 43H. Somehow changed to A332 and I was re-allocated 24G bulkhead. I checked a few days ago and all fine. Got to SIN airport and was handed boarding pass for 24G.

Went to board and notice row 23 is bulkhead. Another switch to A333 very late. Yes I know one should always check but I was not very happy. Went to CSM who was very surprised. Luckily 23JK were vacant otherwise could have been an unpleasant flight.

I need to find alternatives as 2 bulkhead aisle seats on a 200+ seat economy configuration is just not good enough.

Perhaps QF should reconsider their omitting PEY from the A330s?
But then they might be considered as copying CX...

Happy wandering

Given that CX are a profitable private airline without government backing, copying them would usually be a good thing!

And they will give it - after the ALP and Greens refuse to repeal the foreign ownership provisions of the QF Sale Act. It will be painted (quite accurately) by the government as Labor and the Greens "refusing to save Qantas".

Then Abbott will announce the 'second best' option - that he's been forced into - of the debt guarantee.

Politics 101.

Least you still have a flight, we have lost ours over here in PERTH!

Seems the good money is AJ will be gone in a year. Might be a year too long.

In a series of focus groups conducted in February in Sydney's central business district with a $120 incentive for 90 minutes of grilling about Qantas, one of the participants said each of the eight people in his group agreed on the following: 1. Qantas was/is our national carrier - we were all proud of Qantas; 2. Australian pilots, Australian cabin crew, Australian aircraft servicing, safety and on-time flights are the most important factors when choosing an airline with which to fly [more than food, Qantas Club, in-flight service, seating, entertainment systems, etc]; 3. Joyce and his team have ruined Qantas for their own ends; 4. Qantas needs to heal the rift between its staff and management to gain more confidence and thus more patronage from the public. The participant said there were several other focus groups being run concurrently. ''The mood throughout seemed to be consistent with the above.''

Life go's on bobe... since ADL lost its Qantas international route (ADL - SIN) its actually got easier to fly that route WITHOUT Qantas

Welcome to the club ADL saved you a seat.

Btw JohnK is a Sydney-ite, who things Brisbane is a cough hole. Doubt he gives a damn.

I wonder who commissioned that focus group? Because I just don't believe the outcome of 3 unless the question was heavily biased... why would you fly an angled business class seat, on an airline offering a single flight a day, when you competitors are offering quadruple daily, with flat beds, and better service and food?

It just doesn't make sense.

I can see the questions... 'if you had to choose safety or food, which is more important to you?'. 'Looking at seating... would you say seating is more important than safety?'

Easy to get the answer you want!

I wonder which airline Tony Abbott + family flew to Europe with over the break and were all stuck in Y. Must be a first for a PM to be in cattle class. Me thinks if QF, they are regretting not finding him an upgrade.

Senator Xenophon will today move a motion in the senate that calls for the Rural and Regional Affairs and Transport committee hold an inquiry nto Qantas. Among other things it calls for the committee to investigate the likely cause of Qantas's financial decline and the 'open skies' policy and its impact on the competitiveness of the Australian aviation sector.
