27th February Big Qantas announcement

My tip on the big announcement is the merger of Jet Star and Qantas; Virgin has proved the hybrid model works, and with recent financial performance, they would need to adapt to something very similar, but I would say the established idenity of Qantas will stay, and the Jet Star influence will deliver a 3 cabin class service on Domestic; J, Y+ and Y; and up to five class service on International; F, J, Y+, Y, Y-....

Virgin owns Tiger. Tiger to Virgin is Jetstar to Qantas.

As long as it doesn't involve QF cancelling JNB or SCL - the former is worrying given someone at QF was anonymously quoted in the paper as saying "JNB via DXB on EK codeshare would still be attractive" and in light of VA now apparently codesharing with SA.

Surely they can't be serious... it's an extra 4500 miles via DXB from SYD!

JNB is one of the few routes that requires a four engine aircraft and according to QF is not sustainable without a JSA, which is under scrutiny from the ACCC. With a diminishing 747 fleet it may well go.

Well, I suppose it would still be somewhat attractive via DXB if no one is left to operate the route non-stop. But that also sounds like QF has no plans to buy any of the new-gen planes (777x, A350) which would be capable of ETOPS 330 - just enough for SYD-JNB.

Saw this photo linked from a different forum:

The sticker on the current 788 under construction is different from that on previously used (seen inset). Rumour mill fodder! :D

Qantas owns the aircraft. They will paint in JQ colours. This topic has been explained many times. The banner is for the aircraft owner - so the leasing companys who own them have thier logos but the operating carrier will be different.

Rumour I heard from an employee in the catering department is that JNB will cease and that ALL flights to Europe (including from SYD) will terminate in DXB; onward flights (including to LHR) will be on EK codeshare.

Not a great source so perhaps a case of "petrol on the flames".

Seriously ??!!

Yes; that is what my sibling told me. Not necessarily a great source as he hates AJ with a passion and has been full of BS before. But for what it is worth, that is the rumour presently doing the rounds with those who put the food onto the planes.

B*ll****! I think QF would be bound to cut MNL, CGK, NOU and just about any other destination prior to ceasing to operate after well over 70 years of service between Australia and the UK. If anything this big announcement IMHO will be in relation to industrial relations.

I didn't say I agreed with my source! In fact, I hope it is BS; but that rumour is doing the rounds at present.

I just went to the Earning Points Calculator to check PER-SIN. This is what I got. I hope this is a mistake because that will be the end of Qantas International metal from PER.

Technically not - there are flights between PER and AKL.

Tried a few dates and cannot book PER to AKL direct.

Funny thing is the booking engine still shows QF78/77 PER to SIN. Something not right here!
