Re: 28° Mastercard Cash Advances while overseas [No more free cash advances from 1/1/

And yet again their website is down. Lots of complaints on FB.

I have charge of $28.80 that has been withdrawn from my cash account to pay GE Money in the past week even though I have not used the card. Anyone else have a 'phantom' payment?

It sounds like a payment of US$20 (because I have a charge of that much for my Google Drive storage). But otherwise, no, I don't have any mysterious payments on my account.

I figured out that the Coles MasterCard I acquired for the 20K sign on bonus is also GE Money. I haven't used it since.

Couldn't find a ATM in NYC yesterday that would not charge 3.50 USD for A withdrawal? This was chase, Santender and a few others I forgot to try Citi however

I couldn't log onto Citibank either, using the normal login screen that I use on my laptop browser, which had been synced to my Android phone. So, in the Android phone I then went to the Home Screen, then tapped the Mobile tab, and then I was able to log on.

Why all these companies now stop one's moblie phone from acting like a laptop (which they can easily do, and used to do), I do not know.

I am sure there is a way to hack this ! I used to be able to use Firefox on a Mac and it would tell the server that it is a Windows machine!

Used to bypass lots of stupid Mac is not compatible with ..... Messages long time back when Mac was a fledgling.

try Citi however

that's why I completely ditched 28 deg few years ago and switched to BankWest zero platinum for overseas purchases and Citi Plus for overseas ATM cash take out.... because places like USA, in almost every 7-eleven there is a citi ATM there, if you have the Citi plus visa debit card there is no ATM fee...

Yes Citibank ATM's work fine here fee free.

In NYC if you goto the Port Authority Bus Terminal, when you come out on 8th Avenue turn right - there's a PNC branch & ATM's. Fee free.

There has been extensive discussion about 28 Degrees, particularly payment issues via the online portal, on OzBargain recently. Individual experiences vary but it's a worthwhile read for anyone with the card (or considering getting it).

Thanks very much. A very concerning article.

Though if it were me, rather than going to the Financial Ombudsman, I'd have taken the name of the person I was speaking to, and then advised him or her that I was going to forward his or her name to the ACCC, in a formal complaint expressing my opinion that the company's policy was in effect engaging in financial fraud.

It certainly is a stupid policy rejecting overpayments - they stop themselves from having excess money that they can earn interest on, while paying no interest to the overpayer.

One thing that isn't mentioned in the article is that there is another method of making payments, besides Bpay and the On-Line Portal. And that is monthly direct debit from a nominated bank account.

Which has prompted me to use the card to pay some of my water bill and see if the Direct Debit method works witout surprises.

Renato

Thanks for the heads-up here.

It looks like this is a specific issue regarding additional insurance which the OP in that thread has signed up for. My understanding is that you get charged a % of the final balance as an insurance premium. The OP was trying to pay off the balance in advance of the statement being generated to avoid the insurance charge. This includes any items which have been purchased but haven't yet appeared on the final statement.

If you get that estimation wrong, by under-paying, you still pay the insurance. If you get it wrong by over-paying the system rejects the over-payment (and you still pay the insurance).

However... there aren't any additional interest charges because you still have until the payment due date... just you get stuck with the insuruance charge.

So in a way it looks like the OP is trying to have the best of both worlds... wants the insurance... but only if they need a claim. If they feel they don't need a claim they will try and pay off the balance before the statement.

The bank allows this, but only if you get it right.

I don't think this will affect that many people. If you pay off your balance by the due date - and you have plenty of time to do that - there will be no hidden fees and charges. If you have signed up for insurance you'll have to pay the premium however.

If you are trying to pay off a cash advance you might get caught out, but 28 degrees isn't really a cash advance card anymore. Citibank Plus should be used.

The 5 day delay in being able to make payments through their online portal once you have already made one is a PIA.

Re: 28° Mastercard Cash Advances while overseas [No more free cash advances from 1/1/

Doesn't really bother me to be honest. I just pay the bill once, when it's due.

Re: 28° Mastercard Cash Advances while overseas [No more free cash advances from 1/1/

Is 28 Degrees unique in terms of these payment inconveniences?

Re: 28° Mastercard Cash Advances while overseas [No more free cash advances from 1/1/

Also unique in being an otherwise fee free card that saves you 3+℅ on foreign purchases

Incorrect. There's Bankwest Zero Platinum (Mastercard) and Citibank Plus (Visa debit).

And the $89 PA for the Coles MasterCard seems like a small price to at least pickup some flybuys points

Assuming you had a more rewarding card for domestic spend, it'd take a fair bit of purely international spend just to break even against the $89 annual fee. But if the Coles card was your primary for domestic then the points on international spend are a free bonus.

Actually, compared with, say, an Amex at 3% DCC, it only takes approx $3K in oveseas expenditures to cover the cost.

Actually, compared with, say, an Amex at 3% DCC, it only takes approx $3K in oveseas expenditures to cover the cost.

It depends on your valuation of flybuys points against the cost of being able to earn those points (i.e. the $89 annual fee). DCC isn't relevant because it can be avoided through at least 3 no-annual-fee options - 28 Degrees, Bankwest Zero Platinum and Citibank Plus (and also others that have fees but may be bundled free with home loans etc).

At half a cent per point (based on redeeming 2,000 flybuys for $10 off shopping at Coles) and 2ppd points earning, you need to spend the equivalent of $8,900 to break even against the $89 annual fee. Again this assumes you have a more rewarding card for domestic spend and doesn't take into account possible promotions and bonus points offers.

flybuys can be converted to Velocity points (2,000 flybuys for 870 Velocity), potentially raising the valuation. At one cent per flybuys (if you value Velocity points at ~2.3 cents per point), you would still need to spend the equivalent of $4,450 just to break even against the $89 annual fee.

In any event, however you approach it and whatever the amount is (~$3K or triple that), it's a fair bit of spend just to break even against the $89 annual fee before you can effectively start to earn the first point.

For some that amount would be easy to spend, for others they might reconsider it compared to one of the no-annual-fee options.
