Re: 5,000 Free KrisFlyer Miles for New Accounts (or 3,703 Velocity Frequent Flyer Poi

I think the whole site is down. I can't access mine that has had no KF activity at all (and none pooled or transferred into it).

It's going to cost them more money to audit 1000s of accounts than it would to just pay out the 3700 points!

More than 1000s accounts. The day when promotion started, I created VA for my wife and the number starts with: 10282***** ( 10 digit in total ). and Last night randomly create one VA , it ends up with 10283*****

if the numbers is correct, we are looking at approx 200,000 VA account !

I don't think your membership number represents the actual member numbers. With 3m members I doubt the numbers would have increased almost 7% in less than a week because of a partner promotion that had nothing to do with VA.

I didn't think VA accounts were consecutive but might have changed recently

Geez that's a lot of points.

I'm not surprised, and don't forget the pre-exiting VA accounts that didn't have KF account. We are looking at 200-300,000 accounts transferred.

Someone over in "Paying ATO with CC" thread mentioned that Banks are paying $0.01/mile. If that's true, we are looking at a loss of $37/account. Multiply that by 200-300,000. It's about $1M loss in 4 days!

I don't think the inability to log in to VA account is coincidence. True, it's probably impossible to audit 300,000 accounts. But it's quite easy to ask VA just to stop people from logging in temporarily (to prevent people linking to KF from VA) until SQ come up with a solution to this mess.

It's possible if people are creating phantom accounts. Both KF and VA doesn't ask for a passport number so it was very easy to create a phantom person. I didn't do it but I can see that it's easy to do. Make up a name, DOB and address, create an account with both KF and VA. Receive 5000 and transfer to VA and transfer to your own account. Each time you do it, you have 3700 VA points. You only need to create 15 phantom members to get enough VA points from Aus to SIN in J.

Looking forward to a potential increase in Trip Reports on this site!

I can't log in either. Looks like they might be closing the last remaining loop hole now.......

But I have a very bad feeling. They might be doing some auditing now and with those VA account that suddenly received multiple 3704 miles are getting suspended...... Even though it is not against their T&Cs, it is obviously abuse, and they can use that to suspend our account........
As long as you didn't sign up any family pets then you should be OK.

I believe VA like many others use a check digit as its last digit, i.e. its only the first 9 digits which increment, so more like 20,000 accounts.

You know I have a real problem when we do something that someone did not consider it is so easily termed abuse. Ignoring those who created names in fictional names, I just don't see this as abuse. The two main components of this are actively promoted by SQ.

1. Setting up an account with an Australian address. Actively promoted by SQ, as long as address or name is not fake cannot see how this is abuse, if they are then fine.

2. Transferring to VA. Once again, both SQ and VA have been actively promoting this ability. If SQ did not forsee people would actually use the facility they have been promoting this is little less than stupidity on their own behalf, not "abuse". A classic case of using offense as your defense.

Of course would also note that VA aren't losing from this. While they don't want to annoy SQ their own VA member base is very valuable and cant really see them alienating them just to keep in with their partner when its pretty clear their partner themselves stuffed up. I would also not that SQ themselves have a pretty good record of honouring such mistakes.

Not disagreeing with your general points but one observation ..... it's not about "keeping in" with their "partner" .... more about keeping their (dotted line) "boss" happy. :-)
